Getting back into anime

Loving the screen caps and posts in this thread right now. Thanks, guys. :)

On a whim, I decided to watch the first episode of Planetes, to watch alongside Outlaw Star. (13 episodes in and need a breather)

Wow. This is good, slice-of-life stuff...in space. The comedy is also genuinely funny, and I love the pacing. Of course, it's only one episode, but so far, so great.

EDIT: Wow. Episode three, with the coffin, was incredible. This show really tugs at the heart strings. It does seem like a bit of an "issues" show, but it does it superbly.

So? Is it less good since it is western?

I never said that it was "less good" since it is western made, I personally think it's a fine show. But that isn't what this thread is about, correct? Avatar != Anime.

Wow, I recommended Baccano, but I must say, that is another very fine decision. Awesome show, and it only gets better.

You're the first person I've ever heard call it that. When Vexille was being released, everybody labeled it as Anime.

Utterly false. I guess you don't like ball-bustingly awesome showcases of manliness and power. Because compared to the first half, the second half has like a billion times more manly.

I think the second half was a bit off putting because of the leap forward in time, but ultimately it was pretty good.

it also features one of the most satisfyingly epic final fights I've ever seen in any show before. :0

Nia was my favorite character ;__;

'manliness', eh?

I also dropped gurren lagann on episode 15 in my world time skips and the death of a big bad means the original story is over.

I think you might actually enjoy Code Geass also. You can watch the first season for free on Bandai's youtube channel. It's not for everybody, but then again, that's why there's a free option to preview it. It's basically a mecha/royal intrigue/cat-and-mouse game.

Can someone help me with bleach? The last thing I remember was when the mask stuff started going down. However it's pretty fuzzy. I believe I can remember pretty well through the filler arc before that. Anyone know what episode the first big filler arc ended and the story came back?

110 is when the Bount arc ended and the Arrancar(the story) started up again.

You should watch the rest.

Concerning Bleach, you haven't missed much.

I why Ichigo initially goes to the Soul Society
Rukia
. He wins there obviously. The second part was about
The people Soul Society created to kill Hollows, but betrayed
I can't remember how they decided to take the Soul Society down though. Then I remember
Guy w/ glasses getting that special bracelet thingy, but he broke it and lost his powers. Only way was for him to get close to death or something, and they tried killing him

Oh yeah and
when they find the kid that's half hollow and his friends when they are invading something...

I finished watching Outlaw Star today. It has certainly aged a bit, but it still provides enough fun and thrills to be worth a look. The characters are all pretty memorable, and the team dynamic is fairly interesting. I did have a problem with how easily crew would join and leave the ship at various points throughout, and I felt there was a lot of filler in the show in the middle episodes, but overall, it was a competent and enjoyable anime about a man chasing his dreams. The ending was fairly satisfying too, which you can't say about a lot of shows, despite some of the story elements being handled extremely quickly. The best parts of the show are the narrated introductions, which occasionally add a more serious edge to the show, and the kickass intro theme.

Despite it having some filler - the show really could have been cut by about ten episodes and could have been tightened up a bit to maintain audience interest at all times - Outlaw Star is a competent adventure through space, told through the eyes of a man who simply likes to dream big. Will it change your life? Probably not. Even so, there is enough in the show to keep your attention, and the kinetic nature ensures that there is rarely a dull moment. I just wish certain relationships, characters, and histories could have been fleshed out a lot more. I think this series could actually benefit from an updated reboot, with a more mature storyline. As is, it rightfully holds its place in the history of anime as an example of solid action story telling, with enough cerebral content thrown in to keep your mind from being overwhelmed by explosions and loud arguments between characters. 6.5/10.

I know you don't like violent amines but Hellsing OVA are 100% better the the series. I find the Nazi fetish the Japanese have very bizzare, good show tho.

I don't outright dislike violent anime. If the violence serves a purpose, and isn't just gore for the sake of gore - like in Elfen Lied and Claymore - then I'm fine with it. I watched the first five episodes of the Hellsing series, and did not really like it. I have heard that the OVAs are much better, so I might check them out.

I'd recommend against Hellsing OVA then. Great show but yeah, gore for the sake of gore describes it perfectly. :lol

Okay. I think I will stick with continuing to watch Planetes. I have watched the first four episodes, and the show is an incredible breath of fresh air. It takes its time to develop, the characters are all interesting, and the storytelling and pacing of the episodes are also excellent. Nevermind that the space scenes are just plain gorgeous.

After finishing the anime, you need to read the manga. They're both awesome in their own ways.

You haven't seen shit yet, episode 6 is where the show becomes something special, and it keeps on getting better from there.

Well, I'm going to try again. There is very little anime that I actually like, so please read this entire thread before spouting off stuff you like and thinking I should check it out just because.

Here is a list of anime shows I have enjoyed in the past:

Cowboy Bebop
Vision of Escaflowne
Trigun
Now and Then, Here and There
Serial Experiments LAIN
Haibane Renmei
Neon Genesis Evangelion

...and here is a list of films:

Grave of the Fireflies
Whisper of the Heart
Spirited Away
Millennium Actress
Paprika
Castle in the Sky
Wings of Honneamise

I have just watched the first three episodes of Elfen Lied and think the show is pretty much awful, with an interesting plot, but horrible characters and inept writing and directing. I have also seen some of Claymore, and was put off by the excessive violence and gore. I guess I don't really like "omg kawaiiiiiii!" and extreme violence anime, so please don't recommend any.

I'm looking for something with substance. No pedophilia, please, and no boom boom giant robots, unless there's some thought placed behind it. A friend of mine is going to give me a copy of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I know it's not from Japan, but he talked about it at length, and it sounds like something I might enjoy.

I'm only looking for the cream of the crop. Help me, GAF!

If you like Escaflowne, you may like Twelve Kingdoms or X TV or Revolutionary Girl Utena.
If you like Lain, you make like Texhnolyze.
If you like Spirited Away, you may like Princess Mononoke or The Girl Who Leaped Through Time.
If you like Whispers of the Heart, you may like Voices of a Distant Star or Kiki's Delivery Service or The Cat Returns.
If you like Cowboy Bebop, you may like Black Lagoon or Crusher Joe.
If you like Millennium Actress, you may like Paranoia Agent.
If you like Paprika, you may like Perfect Blue.
If you like Grave of the Fireflies, you may like Barefoot Gen.
If you like Wings of Honneamise, you may like Crest of the Stars.
If you like Laputa, you may like Porco Rosso.

If you like the Planetes anime, you haven't read the Planetes manga.

Even though you hate extreme violence, you should watch Berserk.
Even though you hate boom boom giant robots, you should watch Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I'm also just getting back into anime. I'm mostly looking for good movies/OVAs.

I like basically all of Studio Ghibli's work, but especially the films with a more realistic bend (Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday, Grave of the Fireflies, etc.) And I just watched 5 centimeters per second today and absolutely loved it.

Does anyone have any good recommendations that are similar to those? Is there a sub-genre for the more realistic anime? Thanks.

Oh, and I'm also really psyched for Ponyo! One week left.

Genre you're looking for is usually refered to as "Slice of Life" shows.

Try Nodame Cantabile. It's a romantic comedy about two music students. Available in Anime, Manga, and a very well done Live Action drama.

Haibane Renmei, and Kino's Jouney also have a bit of the slice of life element to them, but there's more to it than just that.

I'll always have a soft spot for Outlaw Star. Saw it on Toonami back when I was in middle school and going through a huge "OMG Anime!" phase.

I saw it on amazon for cheap, I may pick it up.

Hey, I'm watching this now, and I completely agree, its superb! Characters, pacing, animation, music etc are all top notch. I'm just halfway thru, and it just might be one of my absolute fave.

I freaking love Yakitate Japan, first I thought that the concept was kinda silly, but now I'm having lots of fun! (and learning about bread).

Just to say, awesome anime
