Getting back into the Wii after a year

Costanza said:
Hmm, that Metroid trilogy is tempting. I've only played the beginning of MP3 and couldn't really get into it. Maybe I need to start with the first one.

Wow, really? Definitely get Trilogy then. Three fantastic games for the price of one, and they'll be all new to you. When you finish the first one, you'll be like, "Man I can't wait for the sequel!" like the rest of us (except Anihawk), but then you'll be all like, "Oh wait, I don't have to wait, in fact I don't even have to change the disc!"

If you didn't care for 3, you probably won't care for any of them, despite its gameplay varying slightly from the first two. I'm saying this as an immense fan of the Prime series.

I might agree if he'd played more of 3 and still didn't like it, but he said he just played the beginning, which really isn't representative of the series at all.

I HIGHLY suggest renting just about every single suggestion tust far. Most of them can be beaten in 8 hours and then never played again and most them get old before you even reach that point. The amount of content or depth is just lacking.
Wii Sports Resort (if you play with friends) is worth the full price. It, too, get's old sooner than you might think, but not so soon that 50 bucks isn't a good deal.

And if you didn't like Metroid Prime 3 do NOT buy the trilogy. They all play very very similarly.

Most games are beaten in 8 hours. Unless there's something i'm missing here.

Little King Story, Muramasa, Punch Out!, Wii Sports Resort, and Rune Factory Frontier are the ones that come to mind besides the new ones that are coming out in the next few months.

I have the same problem.

Not that I don't use my Wii, I mean the problem where someone with a gun to my head is forcing me to post in threads that I didn't want to.
:lol holy butthurt
i don't use my wii either. you gonna cry about that too? geez. sorry not everybody loves your precious wii. i don't really touch my 360 or ps3 much either but you guys couldn't care less about those systems right?

I think Wii Sports Resort is definitly the game of 2009 for the Wii. Its leaps and bounds better than the rest of the stuff. I'd say Anno is pretty good too, and I liked Another Code but you can rent that one if you don't want to sped too much money. You'll probably like some of the Wiiware stuff as well. I can't reccomend much because 2009 has been pretty barren in terms of quality releases. The rest of the year + 2010 is looking better so it is a good time to buy a wii I guess.

Muramasa is great if you like 2D action side-scrollers. Plus it's very pretty.
Tiger Woods 10 is great if you like golf games
Wii Sports Resort is a no brainer for multiplayer

No, but if someone starts a recommomdation thread and asks which games he really should get, what's the use if a poster puts down "I never use my Wii". Stupid posts get funny posts. This is NEOGAF DUDE.

I Can recommend Tatsunoko V Capcom
Guilty Gear Accent Core
Dead Space Extraction
Super Paper Mario

Contra Rebirth
World of Goo

also get some GC Classics
F-Zero GX
Ikaruga

People should try beating Little King's Story and Metroid Prime Trilogy in 8 hours and come back to me about that.

Fuck Constanza, you've got a lot of catching up to do. Did you miss World of Goo as well or did you play that on PC? Brilliant game.

Nobody cares about your usage of any system in a games recommendation thread, actually. :) I don't think that's a hard concept to grasp.

Well, yeah. If it were a "Recommend me a 360 game" thread, posting "Man the 360 sucks I never use mine" would be equally stupid. Same for the PS3. But you know that, because you seem to be literate enough to read the posts, but have some sort of visor that filters them through an agenda.

You're smarter than that.

Okay, for now I just picked up MP Trilogy and HOTD: Overkill.

I'll probably grab Murumasa and Wii Sports Resort (does anyone have one of those $10 off codes for Amazon?) along with Boom Blox 2 and Mad World next. Little King's Story looks kinda interesting.. dunno.

Dead Space is in my gamefly queue. I think I also need to get Pikmin w/ Wii controls. Worth the $20? Loved that game back when I owned a gamecube.

and, of course, Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Excellent.

And dude, if you like Pikmin, Little King's Story is just perfect for you.

Little King's Story is a pretty strategy/RTS game that's repetitive and shallow. A rental at best.
.

I guarantee that you didn't play this game.

my favorites:

Punch Out
Little Kings Story
Muramasa
Nyx Quest (Wii Ware)
Resort
and Toki Tori (Wii Ware) if you haven't already (from mid-08 i think). Great game.

oh... and exciiiittteeeeeeee. Excite Bots is awesome.

The best wii game I played this year is PES 2009, but you have to be a soccer purist (and the 2010 version is coming in a couple of months).

Came here to post a few suggestions but Stumpokapow covered pretty much everything in a spectacular way.

Personally I enjoyed a lot the latest Tiger Woods, MP Trilogy, HOTD and WSR.

I'm following a path similar to yours, got a PS3 a week ago (or something) and it's a great thing to have a new console. Congrats for your repurchase. :D

Yeah, you're missing part of the post you quoted. And I was being generous with 8.

I think he's talking about PS3 and 360 games aswell.

While not absolutely urgent at the moment, you should eventually get a couple Perfect Shots (holy shit, they're only $10 at Amazon; screw the eventually, do it now) and, obviously, an extra Wiimote. Since you got Overkill, you have got to, at least once, experience dual wielding your way through it. This is technically possible with the Wiimotes alone, but not nearly as awesome.
Yeah, I bundled a perfect shot with my HOTD order. Those things are awesome.

When I buy another controller next week I'll grab another one.

I am imagining a group of people in one room shouting "get this, buy this", then this one guy stands up and says "I never use my Wii", then everyone just stares for ten seconds and continue...:lol :lol

You beat LKS in eight hours? I am fucking impressed. I'm pushing 20 at the moment.

Can you record a speed run? You're guaranteed to set the record for it online.

I'm picking up a Wii again when Galaxy 2 releases. And I'm buying Madworld, Overkill en Dead Space also when that happens.

Maybe No More Heroes to, but I want the US version, not the crappy EU version without blood. :(

I second Tenchu. I really like that game. I think it's probably better on PSP because the motion controls are a little imprecise, but it looks better on Wii.

de Blob came out around the time you sold your Wii, so if you haven't played that, and you like platformers I highly recommend it. It's not light on content, it really feeds your 100% every level OCD tick, music reacts to how well your doing, and you can get it dirt cheap now.

I'm currently playing through de blob at the mo and it's a bit annoying that if you don't 100% the levels you have to start over from the beginning when you replay the stage. Or am I doing it wrong?

Also, I'd recommend Disaster although I could imagine it may get a bit repetitive by the time you've completed.

Ignore this. Corruption has the weakest beginning and is the least "Metroid" game of all trilogy. Too much voice acting, mission objectives, escort missions... Playing the trilogy back-to-back made me see how a better game Metroid Prime really is and why I think the other games kinda diminished its greatness...

The reason I said that is because we don't know what style Costanza (or anyone) will like. Some people prefer 3 and its increased gunplay, some prefer 1 and 2 and the slower pace and focus on exploration. However if they didn't like 3, chances are greater they won't like the originals more than the other way around.

Personally I love all 3, but not everyone can be as awesome as me.

you're right. thats why i couldn't get anywhere with it.

I played up till Onii King and did some quests after. Sry I hurt your feelings but I tell it like it is, man.

So you beat the first major boss. You really delved in deep man.

This thread seems as good a place as any to ask, which is the best light gun shell for the Wii? The HOTD gun is a tenner in the UK but the Nyko is ÂŁ13. Is the Nyko better?

Most people mentioned the retail games, but many many underhyped Wiiware games got ignored because the media only cover XBLA and PSN games. As a result, everyone thinks the Wii has no good downloadable games.

These are some of the good ones released since the end of last year to now:

Me, You & the Cube
Contra Rebirth
Alien Crush Returns
Swords & Soldiers
World of Goo
Tetris Party
Space Invaders : Get Even
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles : My Life as a Darklord
Final Fantasy IV : The After Years
Bit.Trip.Beat
Bit.Trip.Core

I love the "sorry if you feel hurt about me saying this about your precious console/game X" remark. You just know they don't have anything worthwhile to say.

Klonoa. I will refrain from gushing too much, but this is such an awesome and overlooked game. Except the expanded health meter, which nudges things towards the easy side, it takes everything good about the original and makes it even better. You can feel the developer's love for the franchise oozing out every pore.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say pick up NiGHTS; JoD on the cheap. It gets endless amounts of hate (and it does deserve to be pointed and laughed at for the shitty in game cut scenes and bland on foot levels), but once you cut away the extraneous content there is a genuinely good game hiding underneath. The flying levels, particularly Helen's, don't get 1/10 the love they deserve. Just make sure you play with a Gamecube controller. The IR and nunchuck analog are worthless for this game.

you played till the first boss. you basically played the prologue... :S
You havent even unlocked a tenth of the units available....
you havent experience the ridiculous and sometimes trippy boss battles to come.
You havent realized how ridiculously large the game world is.
The story hasnt even started.
You didnt experience the touching, yet sad ending.

Next time you call a game shallow, at least play it....

It is fair to say you did not enjoy the game and you stopped playing it, but to call something shallow after 20 minutes is a bit silly when the game is at least 40 hours long.

I am going to second most of the recommendations in here, especially those few longer lists floating around. If I had to give a top five for the year it would be:

Little King's Story
Wii Sports Resort
Muramasa
Punch-Out
MadWorld

I'm also going to urge you to try LKS. It's charming, deep, lengthy and just pure fun. One of my favorite games across any console.

I bring bad news. Sort of.

Little King's Story is a pretty strategy/RTS game that's repetitive and shallow. A rental at best.

Muramasa is a 2-d button masher. Not so bad. Try it and see if you like it.

I heard good things about Dawn of Discovery.

Also, if you liked Disgaea, Phantom Brave got a port on Wii which you may like. Looks a bit dated though.
I got Phantom Brave recently and if it weren't for my tendonitis (read: Blackberry thumb) I would be playing it a lot more. A nice fun take on SRPGs with charming art imo. And I managed to snag it for cheap right after it came out. Of course it's on PS2 also.

Punchout is excellent, and I would highly recommend Excitebots to any Excitetruck fans. I loved it. Boom Blox Bash Party and Wii Sports Resort are also great (WSR obviously being one of Wii's best this year). Rune Factory is very good as well.

I personally found Madworld overrated. It's worth the price it's currently at ($20-ish), but definitely not the $50 or whatever I paid for it (got an Amazon preorder deal but I forget how much that was). Little King's Story is very good, but probably a little overrated also. But again, $30 seems just right.
