Getting into VR / PSVR on PC

Hi folks!

So I tried VR for the first time a week ago and loved it, the immersion is incredible, and its just incredible to be in a digital work. I figured with the black friday deals, maybe I could check for some nice setups at an affordable cost.

What do you guys recommend? I live in Portugal, so we wont get crazy deals like in the US or UK, but I've seen Playstation VR for 229€ with 5 games including Skyrim and Resident Evil, which seems like a really nice option, however, being limited to the Playstation is a draw back. I've seen some articles saying that you can plugin the PSVR to the pc and use it on steam, which seems incredible, has anyone tried this? Doest it work nicely? If not, which system do you recommend?

PSVR is amazing. Astrobot is the best game currently out for VR and is a PSVR exclusive.

That said, if you have a good PC there are some great PC VR exclusives as well including Asgard's Wrath and, of course, the upcoming Half-Life game.

I wish I had a gaming PC just for VR, but i wouldn't personally give up PSVR for it.

So, I guess it is a tough call. You can't go wrong either way.

Yeah thats my thinking, its quite a though call, Rift S is almost double the price around here, so im not sure if its worth considering its more "future proof", or get the cheaper PSVR kit and enjoy the console experiences.

I love PSVR but I just don't have the space in my room for it to work properly

If I was going to do VR on PC I would get a Oculus Quest as that is standalone and can be hooked up to a PC for more demanding games. Playing Superhot VR without cables sounds amazing.

This is a great Black Friday deal for $199. PSVR and camera with 5 games. No Move controllers included - not needed for those games though.

Quest won't be able to play Half-Life I assume?

Yup, thats the deal around here for 229€ which is pretty affordable, and I could get the controllers later, i've heard wonders about the London gangster experience.

It should be able to since the quest can hook up to a pc and Alyx isn't exclusive to Valve's Index.
Quest is probably your best bet op, but that's not knocking the PSVR. Yes, being exclusive to a console is a downside but we do know that it will work on the PS5 too and Sony has some killer exclusives like Iron Man and Astro Bot. I've heard that you can connect a psvr to a pc but it's a very sub par experience due to the nature of it's light tracking.

I just thought Quest didn't play the more demanding VR games. I guess I don't know that much about it. If it can handle games like Half-Life and Asgard's Wrath, I should check it out.

Quest will be able to play Alyx. While the Quest is standalone it now has the feature of being able to hook up to your PC with a cable to play basically anything.

The PSVR deal is insane, especially if you buy from Gamestop as you get a $25 GC as well. I think in the long run the Quest is the better buy.

The Quest here is about 500€ which is almost double, which ends up at the same price of all other options, apart from the Rift S that I can get on amazon for 399€

One more question to the people using PSVR, hows the graphics? Most videos I see are quite blurry, is that how you see it in game? Or do you see a sharp image?

Hahahaha I didnt even know you could watch porn in it, how do you watch it? I mean, how do you actually get a VR porn film, or any fim?

We have a PC VR thread, lots of hardware/game recommendations there.

The basic gist is if you have the money to burn you get the Index, if you can afford half that the Rift S and if you can afford half of that half one of the previously-premium now-discounted WMR kits like Samsung's Odyssey as long as you understand you sacrifice some tracking quality/range.

Caveat, if you also care for stand alone VR (no PC tether) you can switch Rift S for the Quest once more people approve of the Link function and can actually recommend 5m+ length USB 3 cables that give a good result with PC VR.

You also need to look into your interpupillary distance because Rift S and any WMR outside Samsung's only have software IPD adjustment which covers a somewhat lower range, the rest products actually shift separate screens/lenses to match a larger range.

That's it. If you care to do more research you can look into mixing and matching Index/Vive/Pimax parts, maybe with used stuff, but I doubt you can save much compared to going full Index. These are the only fully compatible for mixing and matching products.

You can also ignore Vive Cosmos exists because right now it seems like a more expensive Rift S that doesn't do good enough tracking.

PSVR costs about the same as a WMR kit if you include controllers (or AIM for any decent FPS control) and has some cool exclusives (PC VR many more) but the tracking quality leaves a LOT to be desired, even the cheapest PC VR will be like a next gen leap in terms of gameplay experience.

Edit: and no you can't get any kind of a decent experience if you try to use PSVR on PC as far as I know.

You can hook up the PSVR to a PC using an app called Trinus (costs about US$15), but in my tests, it's been a total disaster, and barely usable, not worth the time.

I'm w/ Al3x1s: if you want cheap-but-good VR on PC, get a Samsung Odyssey+. It was selling for about US$240 recently.

I had a PSVR back in the day. Was nice in the beginning but the drifting, meh tracking and somewhat blurry picture paired with the elaborate setup process made me sell it. I ordered a rift s some days ago and hope that it delivers where the PSVR failed me.

Psvr tracking and controllers are pretty subpar, they work but its immediately noticeable when you try pcvr.

Psvr cool for the price and has strangely impressive tech for what it is(refresh rate 120hz) but I recommend the quest or Rift S for people on a budget that have a PC.

I do feel like Sony and oculus exclusives will be a heavyweight fight in the coming years. Sony just has a slew of devs that no one can match.

Like consoles the biggest factor is the games. Astrobot and Half-Life are the biggest exclusives to consider.
