Getting rid of stomach fat.

Cut alcohol completely out of your life along with other high carb foods. Eat leaner meats and cut your calorie intake. Also cardio cardio cardio

If the fat there is so called teen fat, it can be very hard to remove by just cutting. For example I have that and at one point I was 185cm / 63kg (before that I was 83kg) and I still had the fat around there. It just didn't go away. I was super skinny everywhere else but huge lovehandles and belly. Then I said fuck it and just decided to build muscle around it to make it seem smaller.

If anybody has the correct answer on how to do this for the average joe they would be a bajillionaire.

It's on of life's great mysteries. How to get a 6 pack.

It doesn't take a genius, low body fat and some hard work will show a 6 pack.

How is this going to help him reduce stomach fat?

There's research that shows targeted exercise can help, but it also need to be done after overnight fasting to get the best results. The idea is that blood flow in those areas helps kickstart the fat burning... so combine targeted workouts with some good cardio, at the very least it'll help your core get strong. Beats slouching and droopy abdominal muscles plus the belly fat...

Anecdotally: High-intensity interval training (alternating high and low intensity exercises) keeps you burning calories longer due to increased metabolism. I liked and would recommend the Insanity 60-day program. I lost 1-2 inches on my waist and gained 5 lbs overall, the muscle gain and fat loss made a big difference in my shape.

Yeah, unfortunately for guys the midsection is the main fat storage area so it's generally the last area that slims down when you're cutting body fat.

Improving your eating habits with less carbs is a good place to start but cardio helps a lot as well. Some people also swear by those fat burning belts but I always feel like that's just shedding water weight.

Spot reducing is hard, or impossible. You can build up the muscle in your abdomen at the same time as losing body fat. That's your best bet. Losing body fat is hard, but you probably just have to cut and eat clean.

WTF is that?

That doesn't even remotely qualify as a pull up.

OP, eat better foods and eat less of carb filled foods. No beer and no breads.

track your caloric intake and figure out how to cut 500 cals away from your diet.

Also, work on core exercises. Core is king is you want a 6 pack.

If he's lifting and running a lot, he could eat more than that and still lose fat. It's easier to trim if you do it slow and easy.

I'm lifting and running 4-5 days a week. As far as diet goes I'm eating lean meats and lots of veggies. I've been doing this for two weeks and have lost 6lbs so I feel like I'm on the right track. Just wondering if people had any other advice that could help.

if your goal is to lose your love handles then you better be in it for the long haul. It's going to take a while.

I used to be ridiculously skinny and could barely eat or sleep, ever since I got on anti-depressants, I'm able to sleep and have a huge appetite, so I gained a lot of weight. I'm feeling much better and I'm looking better too, but I developed quite the gut, so this thread and at a good time.

I cut back on sweets and junk food, I only indulge once in a while, also stopped drinking sodas and I'm eating less carbs. Exercise is harder though, I've been doing some Wii Fit and walking a lot, but once exams are over I'm going to hit the pool and the bike.

Keep doing that.
Stay consistent. It sounds like you're on the right track.

Report back in two months or so.

I'm reading this thread as I'm about to make my third gym trip this week.

I've been doing chest & arm focusing for about 3 months and aiming for 1500-1600 calories a day. Protein shakes, currently 216 pounds (6 feet tall). I keep avoiding it, but it's probably time to cut carbs down if I want to thin up a bit more.

legs? back? shoulders?

If you just want to reduce stomach fat, pick up one of the Beachbody programs and do it consistently. Eliminate sugars, soda, pastries, and white flour products on top of that.

Does this work?

I mean, of course exercise works, but will running deal with stomach fat?
Running is a great core exercise and a great way to lose weight all around and improve overall health. Swimming, in warm water, is also helpful in these areas.

Once he burns fat, then he can focus on more muscle-building exercises.

Changing one's diet also helps, but caloric burning is far more effective.

Are you doing anything to target your core specifically?

Weight lifting is a lot more effective than just cardio alone. Your eating habits are the most important to losing weight.

I like to pretend I'm ignorant so someone can tell me it's going to be alright even when I know I'm fucking up, but I had a whole wheat bagel with cream cheese this morning, and I usually have this every morning. Must I cut this shit out? I've stagnated with my weight loss. I hit my plateau about six months ago and I've really stopped losing weight. My stomach is what bothers me most. I do cardio several times a week, and yes I eat bad here and there, but for the most part I try to keep a 1500 daily calorie intake limit, but it doesn't seem to be losing me fat anymore.

I'm with the OP, stomach fat is a fucking bastard. Any suggestions? How much would a total veggie and lean meat diet help?

Clean up your Diet

Lots of exercise

Strength training to build muscle in the core.
Cardio to burn off that fat

Sleep. Water. Healthy and portioned meals.

No alcohol.

Discipline.

Lots of mat exercises like crunches and other variants I learned from a personal trainer (who's names escape me). She drilled into me that a strong core is key to many exercises and should be a top priority.

caloric deficit and cardio, no sugars, no bread or alcohol, limited salt

i suggest swimming if you can, or ddp yoga. running if your knees are healthy, cycle if not.

crunches and situps won't burn stomach fat.

I don't know what other exercises you are doing but drop the crunches and start doing something like hanging leg raises, variations of l-sits, ab rollers and dragon flags.

Those should all be in addition to squats , deadlifts, cleans etc. They were always the bonus exercises after doing the main lifts.

If you want a six-pack and you don't want to starve yourself and lose muscle (or overtrain cardio and lose muscle), then the best initial advice is to log all of your calories so at the very least you have a good picture of where you're at in terms of daily intake and how those numbers influence your weight. Secondary to that is just to be aware that depending on where you're starting from (your current bodyfat percentage), this could be a very long process that isn't really helped by jumping in really hard up front; it's a better strategy to start easy and slowly increase either / both your caloric deficit and your cardio time / frequency, depending on how well or poorly you're progressing over time. Diets have a tendency to start off well and then stagnate as your body gets used to the new "normal," at which point you either have to back off and be ok with a little lost progress, or go harder and be dedicated to stick with something more stringent.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm really slim but I've gained a little weight on my stomach area and want to get rid.

Diet right. Don't listen to bullshit. Don't cheat. Don't lie to yourself. Set realistic expectations.

Crossfit and the organization as a whole needs to die a painful death soon.

They feed out so much BS to people to sell membership. It's as bad of an organization as Scientology.

Hit the weights, do compound lifts, stop eating cream cheese, and less cardio.

Lean meats, veggies, fruits, and protein bars/drinks for supplement.

It depends on your goals, if you want to get better at something train it first. I work on my v-sit at the beginning of the workout and do a set of the other stuff at the end, but if your core is weak compared to other parts of the body you might want to switch it around.

Because it will help him develop muscles that will make exercises easier. So if you're running, working on your leg muscles will help you do that.

I just woke up so I'm a bit out of it but the bottom line is that your body will change as a whole. You can't do just arm exercises and think that things are going to change. Cardio is great and watching what you eat is super important. I like eating a lot of fruit and meat, and I've been exercising every day. Getting into a routine is hard, but it will work if you give it time.

Why do exercises that focus on specific body parts? That isn't going to help with reducing overall body fat, which is what needs to happen for him to reduce his fat around his midsection. If he focuses on larger, compound lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press, military press, etc) he will be much better off than focusing on individual muscle groups/body parts. Of course cardio/conditioning should be a part of his routine, but I'm mostly opposing your suggestion of targeting specific body parts.
