Bombafail, how much would it cost to look like this motherfucker?

I get all my shirts tailored and many of my pants. I generally find jeans fit well enough that I don't need extra work done.

In general i spend between $7-$20 / item depending on what needs to be done. It is absolutely the best decision from a comfort / fashion point of view I have ever made.

I routinely find decent shirts for $20-$40 on discount so even with the tailoring the shirt remains affordable.

Highly recommend to anyone that doesn't feel anything fits right.

I've been thinking of doing this as well. I got the sleeves shortened, but they turned out to be too short to show under the jacket (pic above is pre-cut). The pants are slightly too baggy. Getting it tailored would cost thousands per suit. Even if I were earning a huge salary, it'd still not be worth having your wardrobe of formal attire being tailored to your measurements. Just too pricey.

Back in the day everyone got everything tailored, bespoke or MTM. When they were ripped or torn you repaired them.

Today, everyone goes to H&M, Forever 21, the Gap or Express and buys a bunch of crap that lasts 1-2 seasons then repeat the process. Part of it is because fashion changes so often, and part of it is because (IMO) peoples weight fluctuates so much these days that you can't count on a small high quality wardrobe fitting the same year round.

Tailoring is coming back though. The style has been focused on "slim" fits as a type of anti-obesity trend. Websites like Dappered and The Style Blogger are incredibly popular now, not to mention all of the menswear tumblrs.

that's probably tom ford top to bottom

so like $6k

but you can easily get similar items just about anywhere.

do none of you people read the fashion thread :P

If you're looking for the brand he is wearing, yes.

Though you can get any other brand and get it tailored for less. I bought an entire piece few days ago which cost me $600. Shit is delicious!

My first and only suit was when I just entered college.

It was from Men's Warehouse lol.

But it did cost me quite alot by that standard, I believe 300 for the 2 piece. Got some lite tailoring done for free there.

It was a supirisingly nice suit. Doesnt really fit me anymore, but the top piece does still fit and actually looks nicer now cause its like a slim fit blazer lol.

Thousands per suit? $100 top per suit

My wife has a lot of her clothes tailored. If you head on down to your nearest Asian neighborhood, you'll probably find some cheap tailors.

I, on the other hand, have no desire to do this with my clothes.

A quick tip for buying casual clothes off the rack. If you are trying on a shirt or whatever, take multiples of the same size into the fitting room when you want to try something on. Three mediums of the same shirt can fit very differently since many companies don't have good quality control in place.

I think my local dry cleaners does alterations. $10 to have your pants fitted.

I'm about to shop for pants that fit "close enough" then get them altered.

Thank you OP for the reminder!

That suit he's wearing costs a lot of money because of the brand name or whatever.

I'm telling you that (if you're fit like JGL) and you buy a much cheaper suit and get it tailored, you can still look that good without breaking the bank.

There a bunch of outlet stores with excellent deals on suits. It's a great investment to look the best you can.

Thank you OP. Was looking to make a change in terms of overall professionalism and style in general, and this looks like a reasonably affordable way to have the appearance I want.

I'm actually glad this thread was created. I got some baggy jeans that I like to wear but feels that it's a little too baggy for my likings now. I never thought to get it tailored until now.

you ain't gonna turn a men's warehouse potato sack into that. you'll probably want to hit up a nordstrom or something for slim suits.

Despite my avatar, I don't have a suit. Sure I would love one, heck I think I would look great, but I never go to anything that would need it. I barely get to use my dress clothes.

Alright so here's my question.

For instance on polo t shirts. Do I buy a size too large and then wash it and THEN take it to the tailors?

I've been wanting to do this for a while now but there are a few things I've been worried about. That and finding the right tailor or if they all pretty much equal.

Apparently, dressing like a celebrity is complicated.

Most of Ilaria's business comes not from single clients but from studios, where the pay rate is much higher—$10,000 or $20,000 for a press tour, say. In the case of a press tour, Ilaria will pack individual outfits together, mark each one for its event ("Letterman Appearance"), and include detailed instructions for her client to execute. ("Tuck the shirt and roll the sleeves.") Socks are included; everything is labeled. It's like a mother packing her kid's duffel for summer camp with his name sewn in all the underwear.

Why not just buy a polo that fits?

I don't think so. The advice I've gotten is to get the closest fitting off-the-rack item and then take it to a tailor. Obviously there are exceptions. If you have an irregular shoulder to waist ratio, focus on getting something that fits well on your shoulders, or as well as it can. Then take it to a tailor and have them work to make sure it fits well on your waist, rather than hanging straight down and making your look bulky.

You get jeans tailored too? Is that expensive? What sort of jeans are you buying that they're worth tailoring?

This is kind of fascinating, I've never even considered getting anything tailored, but the OP has some compelling pictures...

Oh, and what sort of place would you go to to get something tailored? Like, would you just google "tailors" in your area or something?

Money, dude. Money.

I had one of my dress pants tailored, and I look great in them, and I admit that it can give new life to your old clothes, but it starts to add up pretty quick.

Most of the time it's small things. Tapering the legs or just having the legs shortened. Not that expensive, it's like 10-12 to get them hemmed.

has anyone ever tried bespokeway.com? i need a review.

Probably pretty awful.

Honestly you should just need to get them shortened which isn't much at all. I get every pair of dress pants I buy shortened.

I want to start doing this since there's no good clothing stores around here but I'm always afraid the sizes will not be right. I guess that's where tailoring comes in, but I'm even scared to buy short sleeve shirts which seems to be a waste to get tailored.

This thread makes me sad I have no money. I seriously need some new clothes.

that's where measurement charts come in.

How do I find a good tailor and how much is it to tailor a shirt or pants? I've been done dat fashion game with denim but never much else.

I'll just learned to buy Slim fit suits instead of buying regular ones and having to have them altered to properly fit my skinny ass.
