Ghostbusters (2016) movie review thread

Casting women isn't the issue.

Putting capable actresses into a bad film is the issue, especially with a crass script that doesn't suit the franchise.
They're capable actresses. This just looks like a clusterfuck of a film.

edit: nm, misread.

What's the agenda from having someone getting blasted in the dick?

To me it seems like shitting on the original Ghostbusters movie. Like the director hated brand so much, but did it for the money, yet still couldn't help himself from showing disgust towards the original.

I'm going to reserve judgement until more reviews and more plot details come in, but it goes without saying it would be incredibly sad if a movie that needed defending from sexist attacks ended up being sexist itself.

I don't get that vibe at all. Just seems like a juvenile dick joke to me.

Can Bronson & Bobby just fight already?

I would never actually fight Bobby, he's the fucking best

Considering how much Akroyd loves the franchise, I sincerely doubt that he'd grab someone who hated the brand to direct a reboot

Paul Feig hates the original Ghostbusters? What? Where would you ever get that idea from?

Metacritic:

Wreckless Eating (Youtube)

(He spoils the ending, watch with caution).

He says he didn't want to see it at the cinema but a friend invited him to a preview screening. "This movie was really bad, like really really really bad".

So it turns out, this is a man bashing film?, Leslie Jones portrays a stereotyped black women, the group didn't have chemistry and the
boss
was shit......well, let's wait for the other reviews before jumping in with a pitch fork lol

Okay this might actually be some kind of art piece, like a reverse social commentary. He is complaining that every man in the film is stupid or crap at their job... kind of like how women are normally treated in blockbuster films.

Hm.

If you don't like the movie, maybe just accept it might not be aimed at you.

It's pretty clear they're going for a female and children demographic and that's totally fine, might as well go for a different crowd when the likelihood of capturing the magic of the original would be so difficult considering what made that film great.

If that gets you all flustered then you still have the original.

No steam required.

If this does turn out to be a bad film, I sincerely hope the majority of the reviews make it abundantly clear why that is the case so that people can't jump to the "nah, they just don't like the women" excuse.

And what if it ends up being a genuinely bad movie?

Got my popcorn ready.

Still keeping my promise made last year that BVS will be the biggest bomb of 2016 though. Worst of All Time Snyder tops all in the end.

BVS is one of the 50 highest grossing movies of all time.

Maybe it's a bomb in terms of be reviews, but it did pretty well commercially. Bombs in terms of money are probably like the BFG or Gods of Egypt.

Yeah I think you may be projecting a bit there boss.

Yea that might be the takeaway for me. I'll wait till more reviews but I might not be the demographic for this.

Don't you think... you're being a bit paranoid? The dude reviewing it is literally framing the film as an attack on men, don't you think that's maybe going to far? That maybe there is a "pro-men" bent to the tone of the review? Like, he complains about the fact that the GBs are women because it "doesn't make sense" or whatever. Does that complaint make any sense to you? Honestly?

I mean, really think about the kind of person who is this deeply concerned with gender wars. Also, think about the people behind this film, assess how likely it is their goal was to maliciously attack the male gender with this movie. Does the seem, remotely likely to you?

I was probably being too inflammatory, I know a lot of guys in here are sensitive and overly defensive. There's even some in this thread that are inferring my criticism of this specific reviewer applies to literally everyone who doesn't like the film. But please, just look at what he's saying, and calmly assess it for yourself.
I think you're overeaacting and you're the one who can't calmly asses what the review actually says.

The menbashing comments only take a small part of the whole clip. And he doesn't frame it as some sort of malicious attack on men, but as a sloppy moviemaking, where the only way you know how to make specific characters look good is to make everybody else seem terrible.

Bad isn't an objective thing!

No, a film can genuinely be a bad example of film-making. There's no denying this.

If I filmed myself taking a piss and hand it in as a potential marketing project at work, I can't use the argument of "well, it being bad is objective". They would say "this is bad." and fire my ass.

I'm pretty sure that was why Feig got the job. He probably convinced the execs that an all female ghostbusters would bring in women viewers, who have come out in great numbers for Feig's past work with Wiig and McCarthy, to see this film while also having the male audience come because "Ghostbusters".

Literally how can anyone watch that full video and not see the MRA ness? It ends with him saying "women, when you get this small chance to have a blockbuster film, don't just bash men the entire time!"

have you watched a blockbuster in the last 20 years mate?

you seem to be actually having a breakdown. never paid attention to you in the past so i can't tell if you're just doing a character or actually have a screw loose.

Curious in recent blockbusters which women were stupid or crap at their jobs?

I dunno, I would look past that and take his other comments on board, namely those regarding the quality of the film.

but I guess you wont

Didn't Landis imply that was exactly what happened (even though he sounded salty as hell about it)?

Holy shit, this sounds worse than I imagined it would be. The proton pack changes and that ending :/

Yeah, this is... what the hell is this?
They're supposed to be capturing ghosts, not vaporizing them.

Good thing the ghosts and the film are fictional so they can do whatever the fuck they want

RT score 70

User reviews are going to be low, the vocal already hated the movie when the first batch of photos leaked
