Ghostbusters (2016) movie review thread

No, it really feels like a gimmick.
They are trying to attract couples who can't decide between the action flick and the chick- flick.
Basically a big budgetted version of those movies:

Here we go again.

I wonder what the overlap is of folks that defended the garbage fire that was Batman v Superman and folks that are hating this film just because of its existence.

Reddit for the last three months:

"Cut BvS some slack! Watch it again! Watch the three hour director's cut! It's actually a pretty good movie if you're in the right mindset!"

"This two minute trailer for Ghostbusters isn't great, let's all boycott it and talk for months about how we hate it and let's never ever give it a chance."

Caroline Framke,vox.com
"Kate McKinnon is a goddamn star." (tweet)

Anya Crittenton,early screening viewer
"lots of fun, cast is excellent, Kate McKinnon will be the star to emerge from this film. (tweet)

Not surprised by these. <3 Kate McCinnon.

It's worth remember that the reviewer wasn't a fan of the original ghostbusters anyway.

Anyway, all the reviewer said is that *this* film introduces the viewer to a certain "rule of ghostbusting", and *this* film then breaks it's own rule. For him, that lack of consistency was a problem.

The reviewer is a foodblogger.

Have you seen the film?

Nope. It's possible the reviewer missed a piece of exposition that explains the sudden change. If he missed something, fine. If the change works with the rules of the film, that's great. If the explanation for the change isn't in the movie, that's shitty storytelling.

A piece of fiction should still have it's own internal logic. Apparently
the proton packs in the reboot are introduced with the same rules at the original packs. They hold the ghosts with the intention of capturing them. That logic is tossed aside and the proton beams start killing the ghosts instead without an explanation.
Not obeying the rules and logic you introduced makes for shitty fiction.

this is great. And if the ionization rate is constant for all ectoplasmic entities, you'd think they could really bust some heads – in the spiritual sense.

I'm predicting that the movie will just be okay, probably landing at a 65% on RT when all is said and done. It won't be bad enough to satisfy the people who clearly want to see the movie crash and burn, but it also won't be great.

I'm going to see the movie on Friday so I'll report back with my opinions on it.

I'm not looking forward to seeing it because everyone I've seen about it looks aboutsely awful.

My opinion has nothing to do with the fact that it has an all-female cast as I'm not sexist or misgyontic in any way.

I could care less about gender when it comes to films I just want to see something good regardless of whether men or women are headlining it.

Could Ghostbusters surprise me by being OK or at the very least decent? It could and I hopes it does but I doubt it because I've not had so little faith for a movie since last year's Fanastic Four which is a movie I hated with the burning passion of 1000 suns.

Am I predicting this is going to be this year's Fanastic Four? Yes, Yes I am.

Because despite the name I can't help shake my gut feeling that this is going one of the biggest bombs of the summer.

But hey that's just my opinion.

honestly do you think a finale where they just hold a ghost in place is any kind of finale. if all it takes is a little rule bending to have an epic battle finale then sobeit.

It seems like it's easier to control the wands in this film than the original? In the original, the stream seemed stronger with the Ghostbusters just struggling a bit to hold onto their wands..........

My problem with this is that the fighting is much, much more dynamic then the original ever could do with everything being a practical effect of course. But the terrible CG and editing just... Ugh.

I assumed that editing was just for that clip, wherever it's from. No way it's like that in the actual movie. I mean, there's a way. But, no way...

It's almost hilarious to me how many in-depth conversations I've been saying the past few days about the intricate logistics of ghostbusting. I guarantee the original filmmakers did not put that much thought into the logistics when they made the movie.

This weekend is going to be a rollercoaster for many in this thread. Discounting reviewers because of how they're percieved to be in some plot to keep women down or vice versa man haters. Not everyone has their hat in the ring of this men/women's rights fiasco but that's where most people's expectations are and I think it does more bad than good for the film in the long run.

I'm more interested to see if this movie can actually stand on its own even if there's a already a lot going against it online. I'll be reading and watching a lot of reviews from anywhere I can get them because I want to see how different people interpret this movie/review it on its own merits of being a movie rather than a catalyst for a social movent gone horribly in on its self.

Will the internet melt down? Absolutely. Is it a good movie? We'll see in a week.

I'm curious. Has there ever been any major film that had an incredibly negatively received trailer and pre-release publicity that wound up being critically acclaimed after it came out?

Well, the vast majority of filmgoers aren't critics anyway, so I don't think that invalidates his opinion at all.

That ending sounds really bad. The worst part is hearing that the leads don't demonstrate a lot of chemistry. That kneecaps a lot of team focused movies.

Aykroyd probably did. He's a hardcore, legitimate paranormal obsessive. His dad is one of Canada's leading researchers. A lot of it is based on real parapsychology.

As far as the movie goes, I defended and still will defend BvS, and I'm looking forward to this one because I love the cast. I also, despite being a GB fan since I was 6, don't consider he franchise untouchable. Let's stop lumping people into groups because they liked a movie you didn't or vice versa.

Not that I remember. Only thing that is vaguely similar is "Heath Ledger as the Joker!?!?!??!?"

I wish this was more practical than the CG assault on my eyes that it is. I've been trying to remember what this movie reminds me of since the very first trailer and it's those live action Scooby Doo films.
The CG looks very colorful and cartoony which makes it look a little weird when they interact with the live-action scenery. Those Scooby Doo movies did a lot of that.

Spy and Bridesmaids. lol

The ending of the original kept the established tenets of the proton packs and raised the stakes during the final showdown while remaining true to those ground rules. They introduced the notion of "crossing the streams" during their first outing, and set-up the ramifications of that act. They paid that concept off in the final showdown and crossed the streams. It made for a dramatic and exciting ending, while retaining the established logic of the film. They could have done something similar here, but it doesn't sound like they did.

I remember when we laughed about Biogamergirl

Now we get our movie reviews from Wreckless Eating

Is this some eloborate performance art and I'm too dumb to get it?

I dot really get what the problem is honestly. It's an opinion. A food YouTuber can give their thoughts on a film, it's as valid as anyone else's take.

Not sure what correlation you're searching for here. I defended and loved BvS. I don't hate the existence of this film, either. That's just strange. I definitely think it'll end up better than the Internet hate brigade.

This is some of the most selective, dishonest BS I've seen in a while.

Nice achievement.

make a review thread after the embargo lifts and reviews are actually out. Review threads are generally (not always) better when there's actual reviews to actually discuss.
