When one considers the tone and pacing of the original film, you realize that they just do not make movies like that anymore. The original has a real sense of place and time.

I'm not a fan of the original (I do think it's a good movie, but I don't think it's masterpiece material), yet I still recognize that a lot of talent went into making it work. I remain skeptical until I see this new one.

At this point these threads are filled with more people semi-joking "I'm not a fan. I guess that makes me a sexist lol" than people actually saying that someone is sexist for not liking it.

My views of the film obviously don't line up with everyone's here (I'm perhaps putting more stock in Feig than many others on here), but I don't think the vast majority of people on GAF anyway are sexist for not liking what they've seen so far. There's no witch hunt going on here.

I don't get this movie. Max Landis was talking exactly about this crap. It's the same movie bit a little bit different. They pander for the Nostalgia fans and get also the new fans by pandering whatever trend which is big by now. (in this case the Bridesmaid idea)

So J.J. Abrams reign of terror continues, after his terrible Star Trek reboot and The Star Wars fanboy suck up, Hollywood is now using his formula to reboot any movie with some potential for a quick cash grab.

Nothing new and enough retro pandering for the fanboys to keep on board. Next trailers will have more cameos in it, like Star Wars.

Yes, McCarthy isn't thin, but compared to Jones' frame she's definitely much easier to catch. I agree that the joke would have worked better if it was McKinnon or Wiig crowd surfing first, but McCarthy is in no way some whale of a woman to catch with her diminutive height.

I'd say when you have to look up the measurement of each woman to justify the joke, then your joke fails.

It reminds me of the scene in "Jack and Jill" when Jill gets on the horse and breaks it's legs. They just wanted the funny image, and how they got there was irrelevant. It makes no sense.

It's all a matter of degrees. Lots of people hate this movie simply for existing even before you get into the gender of the main characters. I see every remake announcement shit on before a director has been assigned or a cast member hired, purely for existing.

Certainly a remake of a movie as loved by a certain generation like Ghostbusters was *always* going to get shit on just for existing.

But that doesn't get us to 'most hated trailer ever' by itself. Because beloved things have been remade quite regularly. It's only when you add in the clear backlash about the gender swapping that we get to those levels.

So when discussing why this remake specifically is the most disliked ever... I think the answer is sexism. If we're discussing why this trailer is the most disliked ever... then sexism is only part of the answer.

Blind hatred of remakes is a pet peeve of mine, so I'm having to work overtime to feel sorry for the people being branded as sexists for hating on Ghostbusters. They deserve derision, but they don't deserve being branded as bigots when they're not.

A fair post and critique of the criticisms of this movie (both good and bad). As one of the people who really didn't like the first trailer I agree very much that this one is a lot better and would like to discuss that more than any sort of debate on whether someone is sexist or not or a meta-discussion of men's roles in movies in the modern age. So I'm with you on this.

So I'm going to do my part.


Anyways for the people have been saying it reveals too much, do you really think so? Because I personally haven't yet seen too much plot revealed really in that. Beyond the fact that there's ghosts I really still don't know the plot or what the overall specific antagonist of the movie is. I think as far as movie trailers go this one was pretty alright on the trying not to spoiler front.

Sad to see the leaks about the "end villain" being a massive corruption of their symbol is true, though. So, so stupid.

Have you honestly never seen Leslie Jones stand next to anyone before? I don't mean that in a shitty, sarcastic way - I'm honestly asking because I've always known that she's a large woman. Even in her brief scene in Top Five she screamed "large" to me.

The only reason I looked up her height is so I could objectively show you the magnitude height difference instead of just saying "Jones is taller than McCarthy." The joke in the trailer seems incredibly obvious to me, but given all the polemical discussions around this film I feel like even a basic joke like this gets twisted to seem like its pre-emptively hating on some of the viewers when really it's simply a "She's massive"-style joke.

What's been the setup for any film featuring any dumb female secretary / nanny / maid ever? If anything this film is using Hemsworth's beefcake status to show how - even as smart as these scientists are - they can still be immensely boneheaded in their decision to hire him despite being underqualified. That's what I got from an earlier posted Hemsworth featurette anyway. They're at least acknowledging their involvement in hiring this dude for stupid reasons instead of him just being there as window dressing.

And in general, I keep seeing the argument of "Why are they making Hemsworth hot / dumb in this? Jeanine in the original wasn't hot / dumb - she was normal!" and that's absolutely true. But again - these aren't just gender swaps. Their personalities and roles are different. And it's a bit funny to me when there's as clear of a case with Hemsworth as there could be and then some people start actively complaining that he's not like Jeanine. It makes no sense to me!
 
Looks like a mediocre movie to me at least. One thing to me that's really bad is the blue neon ghosts... that shit is awful.

That joke about Leslie Jones just walking away with the ghost on her was pretty funny, but that cringy selfie bit ruined it.

My expectations are still insanely low.
 
Ghostbuster fan since childhood and I enjoyed both trailers(this one more than the last). I just don't care what they do with it. I view it as a separate thing. If it is terrible, it won't ruin my opinion of the original movie. And if it is really bad, I want to see it just to say I did and be able to have an opinion on it. I'm not crazy about what they've done with Transformers but I've watched ever one of them.

As for the Youtube "likes/dislikes", I rarely ever like or dislike a video unless I know the creator. I liked the video honestly because I feel bad about the negativity surrounding the movie.

It probably won't be great but I doubt it will that bad. I will say, I'm not a big fan of Jones and this was one of the few times I've ever laughed at her.
 
The only thing I'm wondering is that if/when this movie turns out bad as an Adam Sandler film will we all clown on posts and have fun or raise pitchforks a la Uncharted 4 with 70+ bans.

Since the Reddit leak was in-depth with everything that goes on in the movie I'm guessing/hoping that it's going to be so bad that it's the former.

The joke with the selfie was about how inherently cringy and dumb it was to take one I thought.
 
Huh.

That was way better than the last one. There were two lame parts of the trailer I didn't like. Wiig being dragged away and the "Really?" part. Other than that, that was enjoyable.

Sure wish these trailers had more from McKinnon cuz I don't get the hype around her.

Oh, just to be clear, I don't think it's some kind of commentary on the backlash, and even if it is, that's perfectly fine. This movie just stinks of Adam Sandler type humor to me.

I'll watch it eventually on Netflix, and maybe it'll all come together for me, but so far it looks terrible, and some of the defense for it seems strange. Someone compared it to Pixels earlier in the thread, and I think that feels apt. Shit looks lazy.

I mentioned previously, for the commentary to work it requires subversion or lampooning of the stereotype. Neither of which fit within a Ghostbusters movie. It's lazy "hyuk hyuk" comedy.
 
I quite enjoyed that trailer! I never expected the movie to be a revelation in cinema, but damn if it isn't going to be enjoyable.

When I first saw the cast I was great with Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones. I think they're hilarious. It took a bit for Melissa & Kate to grow on me, but I'm 100% on board now.
 
Big improvement over the last trailer. Most of the jokes are still falling flat for me, but they are still out of context. Deadpools trailers had the same issue for me, but then they came off much better in the actual film.
 
That trailer was leaps and bounds better than the first.

I don't think I'm worried about the movie anymore. It's gonna have dud jokes but other stuff looks funny so... pretty much like any comedy movie ever. I was legit laughing out loud at the concert scene. Also plot-wise it looks like it's a retelling/revisioning of GB84 so it's more like a reboot mixed with a remake.

I don't know how well it'll fare at the box office with all the negativity surrounding it but at least I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy myself seeing it.
 
A lot better than the last trailer. Funny thing is, this movie might not have such a sea of toxic bullshit flown its way if it focused more on the ghosts/action instead of comedy.

And I just wanna say congrats to everyone who bragged about how they fufilled their moral obligation to dislike the trailer and legitimately believed that anyone would give a shit. You get a special prize!

And that's a-ok, man. Honestly. Some people will watch this and just think it's not funny and I can't argue with that. I was pretty meh on Deadpool's humor, but obviously it resonated with many others. It is what it is.

But my point is that it may not be meant to be commentary at all, but that some people are so certain that the film is an opus to man-hating that the character's inclusion surely must be a commentary on something. Based solely off the trailers, Hemsworth strikes me as a foil character: a handsome idiot surrounded by average-looking geniuses. The humor is in how those two sets of characters interact with one another. It's the same template for any buddy comedy or sitcom - and we never demand a commentary in those genres.

If Hemsworth was a hot female no one would even be talking about the character beyond how hot she was. Because he's a man, some people use it as evidence of some deeper anti-male statement. And it's perhaps this double standard that should be discussed.

Still looking incredibly average
which fits with the original really.

The like/dislike ratio is already horrible so I'm gonna go ahead and say the is pretty bandwagon-y, especially compared to other recent Hollywood reboots.

I feel the original is remembered waaaay to fondly, to the detriment of this film. Either that or was something that would never click with me.

Yeah Neon Ghosts was a terrible idea. Looks like they are from Pixels.

On the other side if i hold a blacklight in my bedroom i see many ghosts too.

I agree with this. Not in terms of technicality because some of the original's ghosts look pretty dicey now-a-days, but in terms of the art style. I appreciate the splashes of color, but I feel like the ghosts feel too-colorful/unimpactful. The beauty of the ghosts in the original is that they looked like real beings that could really fuck you up if they wanted to.

I'm hoping that the whole movie features different types of ghosts beyond what we've seen in the trailers.
 
hahahaha there's no fucking way i'm paying to watch this mess at the cinema. If someone pirates it sometime, i may try to watch it.
