Ghostbusters Trailer 2

Does James Rolfe not make a living from the reviews he puts out there? He quit his full-time job to produce reviews and other content.

Time and time again trailers have proven to not be a fair representation of the quality of a film. How many times have people been burned by bad movies with good trailers and surprised by good movies that had bad trailers?

It's not just my standard. Many critics, comedians, fans, and writers have called him out on it.

He outright says it looks bad and he doesn't expect it'll do well. You can argue semantics, but why would he release a video that says he's not going to see a movie if he hasn't already decided it's a bad movie?

The Harold Ramis comment was in poor taste. I get what he was going for but he doesn't know how Ramis would feel about this remake. Ghostbusters 3 didn't happen because Ghostbusters 2 was seen as a bad movie and they couldn't get the script to a quality that made everyone happy.

It wasn't made because the people involved didn't think it would have been good, particularly Bill Murray.

He laid out his reasons for that and doesn't want to give them money.

That James video is pretty calm and overall quite tame. No idea why it is getting such rage responses.

I was more raged at Ghostbusters that my parents got me as a kid for the master system one Christmas. That thing was a bitch for my younger self. Still played it like crazy.

This one? :P It does look pretty bad.

Why would anyone care? You sound like watching a movie is free. It's not. It's a product that is sold to you, and the trailer is an advertisement. Deciding not to buy something based on an advertisement not appealing to you is the most mundane thing ever.

Would you ever mount this argument in defense of Paul Blart: The mall cop? Or Jack & Jill?

It costs money and time, yes, but you don't have to an opinion on everything. It's okay to say "This isn't for me," which isn't the same as, "This is bad. I'm not going to watch it."

I would, actually. I haven't seen Paul Blart and I don't have an opinion on it. I watched Jack & Jill and it was a struggle to get through. I wasn't wowed by the Pixels trailer and still watched it. It's a bad movie and I can say that confidently because I watched it.

"Don't Judge a book by it's cover" is a great way to live when judging people you meet on a personal basis. So I understand and respect where you're coming from with that.

To extend that to all media isn't feasible though. You will never have the time to consume it all, nor should you. No one should have a moral obligation to do so.

I would assume James feels the same way, and I don't think he would take it personally if you decided not to watch his movie based on its trailer.

That's fair.

I get that you need to have a filter when it comes to entertainment and not everything is made for you, but that doesn't mean you should rule out something surprising you.

My point is that James Rolfe is a critic who found success in consuming good and bad things nerd culture, and sharing his opinions in an entertaining way, and it doesn't feel right for him to basically decide something is bad and therefore not worth his time. I understand that he feels protective over Ghostbusters, but I've been in similar positions with remakes/prequels and ultimately still gave them a chance before deciding on their quality (if I haven't like in the case of Robocop, I don't have an opinion).

Announcing you aren't going to watch something because you think it's bad and it hasn't even come out yet is setting yourself up because there are no absolutes in entertainment. You never know for sure until something is released.

The meltdowns people had over Batman v Superman's poor critical reception is a recent example. Another would be the initial response to The Jungle Book being negative, which turned out to have a positive audience and critical reception, and a solid box office performance.

As a child, I loved the animated version of The Jungle Book and was skeptical about the live-action remake, but I ultimately gave it a chance. I didn't declare it was bad and decided I wasn't going to watch it before there was even a critical consensus. I looked past my own bias and gave it a chance, and I'm glad I did. It could have ended poorly, as I ignored the critical reception of Batman v Superman and ultimately agreed with it.

I don't regret having seen either film.

Lol B33 is raging against James just as hard as the internet is raging against this trailer. Gotta restore the balance eh.
This made me laugh.

You guys know I don't hate James Rolfe, right?

The real Ghostbusters 2 on the NES was the best game until the 2009 game imo, that game you have linked was so bad LOL.

The Ghostbusters 2 amiga game wasn't terrible either but so damn hard to complete and the end mission with Vigo I never managed to even finish.

My parents didn't know any better, just knew I loved Ghostbusters LOL. Young me was excited. I still have that Christmas video taped on VHS somewhere. I go legit crazy at getting a Ghosbusters game.

I had a toy proton pack which I loved as well. Had a yellow foam beam.

Pretty certain it was this

Having an open mind doesn't mean you have to try everything. He has zero interest in watching it. No matter how you try to argue that hes obligated to watch it and criticize it because its his "job" he clearly has a choice to not watch it. If he doesn't want to watch it then thats it. That should be the end of it. If he misses out then he misses out. Its funny because everyone always says to "speak with your wallet" and here he is openly addressing his fans about why he doesn't want to give them money and people are shitting on him for that choice.

I had that exact same one! Fucking amazing, we used to go to the park and bust ghosts all day long like it ain't no thang. We even had a shoppingcart with us which served as a mobile containment module so we wouldn't have to run back to HQ every time our trappers were full.

Being a kid rocked. Now look at us *shakes head*

Might have to dedicate this weekend to watching Ghostbusters 1/2. Haven't seen them in a few years.

OMG I had that EXACT set! The cheap foam "proton stream" I had completely forgotten about having this, thank you so much for sharing!

Also I had the Ghostbusters HQ with the goo entry point at the top but I ended up ruining it with all the goo, I have no idea how I broke it :(.

Damn we all had excellent parents/guardians (unless you bought it yourself then good taste!!). Also that set must have made bank globally. I'm from Scotland. Thinking back I'd probably have thought it was some cheap knock off from an unheard of toy maker. Obviously not! Maybe it was an officially licensed toy.

Holy shit ebay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1984-Ghostb...laster-Ghost-Trap-and-PKE-Meter-/262443895758 / http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Gho...5bb9e79&pid=100005&rk=5&rkt=6&sd=262443895758 / http://www.ebay.com/itm/PROTON-PACK...5bb9e79&pid=100005&rk=3&rkt=6&sd=262443895758

Ah well, it was worth me playing with that till it fell apart I guess.

He has a choice whether or not to watch it, but he also has a choice whether or not to put his reasoning out there prematurely.

He's speaking "with his wallet," but that hasn't stopped him from watching and reviewing other movies that had awful buzz leading up to their release and by his logic encourages the industry to keep making the same kind of films. I get Ghostbusters is a beloved film by him, but if other people (myself included) can set aside their bias and give something a chance, so can James Rolfe.

My criticism is that it's a premature response when all we have to go on are the film's trailers. Time has shown again and again that good movies can have bad trailers and bad movies can have good trailers.

Speak for yourself, I'm fucking amazing now

But we still all go on online forums and grumble like old men/women. Take me back to the simpler times of enjoying shitty games (Star Wars Game Gear game... *shudders*.... Game Gear *shudders more*), and going outside with plastic toys :P

If you still do those things, then yeah, you're fucking amazing. I guess seeing as I was a Sega kid I'm still fucking amazing. Nintendo kids, pfffttt.

He clearly stated his fairly reasonable reasons for not wanting to watch the movie. If you can't accept that maybe the problem lies with you? Even if the film is good that doesn't change the fact that he doesn't like what they did with the franchise. You'd think on an internet forum based around video games this would be more understandable. Premature? He's a famous internet personality who's known for loving Ghostbusters. I'm sure he's been getting emails/social media/youtube comments begging him to review the film. Its not unheard of for people to put out statements in order to stop the massive influx of questions/requests.

Yeah my parents got me it (I am 31) and I am from the UK as well, I thought it was a cheap knock off set at the time as well but I loved it nonetheless, it must have been official lol.

80s kids FTW. I'm 28 so just made the 80s.

Wish I had kept some of my childhood toys and games. Most that survived were given to charities. Good cause I guess but I'd really love digging some of it out now.

Consoles and games tended to be traded upwards to new systems. Collectivitis only really started as I got older.

Crowd surfing, selfie jokes, mugging...I'm not just slamming this movie alone but most comedies I see these days are just not up my alley at all. Like, I can't think of a recent comedy that is one of my favorites at all.

I had those as a kid as well, but has anyone here stepped up to the next level and bought the Ghostbuster prop replicas from Matty collector from the past few years? I have them all but the Ecto Goggles since they didn't get good reviews. I'm hoping that they release a proton pack someday since I don't want to build one and it's super expensive to buy a custom built one.

It is perfectly reasonable to prejudge a film by its trailer and make a decision on whether or not you think the film is bad and also if you should go to watch it or not.

Will go to the cinema opening day, pay for a ticket to Ghostbusters, then immediately leave the cinema without watching it.

Checkmate, everyone.

What are you talking about? I've got a NERF armory that gets regular use.

Dude get a GAF party sorted for all us manchildren to come to.

Yellow foam beams are still the best lol.

Yup same, think all mine went to charities or boot sales, I still have some of my childhood toys back at my parents house that I still need to dig through but never get the chance to get there now I have a family of my own etc.

Even more the reason to find old toys! Kids these days are too spoiled by technology. Time to find the proton pack for your kid(s) hahaha. I'm guessing he/she/they are young but a watch of Ghostbusters shouldn't be too far off.

Yup, I agree, my little boy is 3 and a half years old but I don't let him go near technoloy, when I was a kid I would be playing outside and using my imagination and that's what I want him to do as well.

Old toys are the best and they encourage imaginative play rather than sitting there like a slug in front of a tablet, a watch of Ghostbusters is most certainly not far off whatsoever :-).

Another year maybe and then we were in business lol I know some will probably say "That's far too young" but I was watching Ghostbusters at that age and numerous other programs and as far as I know I am ok? (Yet to be verified...lol!)

I think I was 5 or 6 when I first seen Ghostbusters. Maybe older, but certain around then due to Christmas with the Ghostbusters game. Hard to remember. I broke my leg at 4 and I'm certain it was after then. I know I got stopped watching Aliens when really young and being upset lol. Aliens was genuinely a step above Ghostbusters though.

OH BOY! We're talking about Cinemassacre again?!?! Buckle in kids, we're in for a bumpy ride.

It's perfectly reasonable to decide not to see a film by its trailer.
It's perfectly reasonable to be a critic and decide not to see a film by its trailer.
It makes you look like a fucking terrible critic if you're releasing a 6 minute screed about how this film that you haven't even seen is shitting on your childhood by not having a subtitle and the *proper* cameos without even seeing it.

While I am not particularly excited to see this movie I did find it amusing how well received the trailer was when I went to see Jungle Book. The theater was totally cracking up at the jokes and I would not be surprised if the film makes an average amount of money despite, potentially, getting bad reviews.

If only I had listened to your words of wisdom sooner.

If it gets generally negative reviews, it would be the first Paul Feig directed film to do so.

Checkmate, everyone.

I'll do one better: I'll swipe one of those discounted coupon passes for the move that soon will be bundled with retail Blu Ray discs. I'll head to the theater, sit all the way in the back row and pull out my phone to watch the 1984 movie. I think I'll get a better movie experience that way.

Eh your last point could be seen as him showing and explaining in a certain way to people why he would not make a good review, simply because he already doesnt like the trailers and his nostalgia for the past movies is so strong it would be hard to get a "balanced" review.
So i dont get why people are angry at him.. he is not responsible for the shit show that came after his actual "reasonable" video.

As opposed to caring what you think? I think James, who is a huge ghostbusters fan, layed out his points articulately.
