Ghouls N Ghosts / DaiMakaiMura comparison on 16-bit platforms

I randomly 1CC'd the Genesis version one lazy Sunday afternoon without really trying a few years ago. I can't get anywhere near the end of the first loop on any other version. So yeah, I guess that's a difference.

IMO, when I look at the X68000, I think of it as a CPS1 board posing as a computer. It's got mostly the same specs.

I think the CPS1 board is stronger, it can display more sprites (128 vs 256) one more background layer (3) than X68000 (2), and more colors. However since many of the early CPS1 games didn't push the hardware that far, the X68000 could handle those games. Yet, with Final Fight, there are about half as many thugs on the screen at once compared to the arcade.

I could be entirely wrong about the specs, however.

well, now I have seen goddamn everything..

ITT people dont know ghosts n goblins from ghouls n ghosts and super ghouls n ghosts

gaf does not care

in all seriousness - not that that wasn't - Capcpom didn't do the series many favors by getting a little funky with the naming. Ghsost n Goblins -> Ghouls n Ghosts -> Super Ghouls n Ghosts -> Some Gargoyle quest side-story games (originally referred to as GnG in EGM back in the day, during early previews) and then revisited later as Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins. Make up yer damn minds!

Anyway GnG, back in the day, always felt like a decent companion game to Castlevania for many obvious reasons. It's too bad to see how far the legacy of one game went, while the other disappeared into obscurity. GnG should have had a decent leg up on Castlevania for several reasons if you think about it; more platformer/mario-style gameplay, lots of goofy characters, excellent platforming and tons of weapons, super-solid audiovisual presentation. Hell they had a straight shot into the 16-bit lead-in with the Genesis launch, for crying out loud. The difficulty level was probably it's achilles heel (although if there was an "easy Ghosts n Goblins," who the hell would have wanted to play that?)

It's really a big difference in color and detail.

Still the Genesis version was awesome for a 5-megabit cart. Awesome music.
I don't think I played any other version than the Genesis one until many years later.

Man, Ghouls 'n Ghosts is one of my fondest Genesis memories. Spent a lot of time with it. It was top-tier stuff for me, despite its shortcomings when now compared to the arcade version. But at the time, it was incredible to be playing something like that at home.

Absolutely. I bought Ghouls 'N Ghosts for Genesis a few weeks before my dad bought me the system in April 1990.

I disagree. While there is more color and detail in the SuperGrafx version, the sound and music are just awful compared to the Genesis version. I actually prefer the Genesis music to that of the arcade. The Genesis version was considered to be exellent, it won EGM's game of 1989.

Never been a big fan of much of the Genesis/MD sound. So much so that it is easily my least favorite system of the 16-bitters cause of all the thuds. Sound could be better, true, but I've always preferred the sound chips in the PC-engine.

Probably I was just impressionable since the SGFX version was the first one I played. I was SO excited when they released it on VC a few years back. I'll never touch the Genesis version again.

I used to ride my bike down to the Toys R Us in Shopper's World in late summer 1989 just to look at the Sega Genesis display they had setup behind glass showing GnG in attract mode (you couldn't even get your hands on it!) I wanted that thing sooooo bad. Finally picked it up @ Thanksgiving and played it for 2 full days with my best friends, until we beat the game. Probably one of my beys gaming memories ever.

Even though I saw the arcade (and "better fidelity") versions much later, I never really cared. GnG on Genesis was perfection as far as I was concerned.

One of my all time favorite franchises, and Ghouls n Ghosts remains my favorite entry. The Genny title was the first purchase I made for the system way back in the day.

I thought it was 6 megabit. I loved that version, although it could have been a lot closer to the arcade if it was on a bigger cart and had more experienced programmers. How did Sega gets the rights to do so many Capcom games back then? Sure did help the appeal the Genesis/Mega Drive in it's early days with no third party support.

So if Ghouls 'n Ghosts was 4 meg, and Strider was 8 meg, how many megs was Forgotten Worlds?

Those three games formed my Genesis triumvirate of Capcom/Sega gaming goodness.

I am pretty sure all those 1st-gen games were 4 meg. Strider was a big deal when it was launched a while later "1st 8 Meg game!"

Genesis Ghouls 'N Ghosts was 5 megs, not 4.

SuperGrafx version was 8 megs and I think the arcade was either 16 or 32.
Genesis Strider was 8 megs, forget what the arcade was but I think it was over 40 megs. The unreleased SuperGrafx Strider was supposedly 10 meg.

Genesis Forgotten Worlds was 4 megs, arcade was 32 I think.

Loki was amazing.

Too bad he was such a pushover.

I wish they would port the PSP version to PS3 or XBLA.

When XBLA and PSN really took off I really expected this (and Maverick Hunter) to show up for sure, but never did.
Just weird IOS hybrids.

The series really needs a kickstart though, Arthur showing up in MvC3 was a nice start.

Impossible to tell from those screenshots coz they all have different filters on them. Normally the arcade/68k are identical.

The PSP game WAS that kickstart and it was fantastic. It's a shame it was seemingly ignored by most people.

I think Ninty's constrictive publisher exclusivity at the end of the Famicom's life gave all of the big arcade title makers incentive to license out their popular releases simply because there's money to made there and because the 8-bit NES/FC just couldn't hope to handle them. Sega's and NEC's consoles and various computer platforms all had loads of internal arcade conversions and modified NES/FC games done. Sega did an utterly fantastic job with those Capcom conversions and, I agree, those games saved the Gen from total obscurity relative to Ninty.

Who was the guy who posted a billion threads all over classic games forums a few years back about GnG comparisons? I think he was some sort of NEC fanboy?

It sure didn't help that one guy's review which was 4/10 was posted in like 5 different prominent magazines and websites. Thanks 1up/EGM/OPWhateveritwas guy! You helped tank one of the best arcade games of the last decade. Seriously, average score for that game is so comically low considering how amazing and fun it is.

It was AirRaid, he did a terrific job on his comparisons although he was really wacky.

He has a bunch of comparison vids on youtube as well. I used his screen captures for this thread.

Jeremy Parish, I think.

Was it Jeremy Parish? I seem to recall him being the one slamming the game, though I cannot understand WHY he of all people would trash it. The game was absolutely fantastic.

Sucks that Gokumakaimura Kai never got a stateside release.
I just had to look that up. Didn't realize they made an update for it. The copy of the game I own actually IS the original Gokumakaimura (which has fantastic box art) rather than the US release. I'll have to look into Kai.

Still my favorite game of all time. I could 1cc the Megadrive version. I bought the arcade PCB twice! I never beat Ghosts n Goblins though. I really should one of these days.

Oh and a key gameplay difference between arcade and Megadrive/Genesis was that in the console ports you could go from crouching left to crouching right WITHOUT having to stand up first. Small change made it a LOT easier.

You got the arcade PBC twice? Way cool man. I used to own a complete (converted from an Atari cab) Altered Beast arcade unit. I miss having it even though I can play it in MAME whenever I want.

This is definitely true.

I've always wanted an X68000, more for the hardware design than the games themselves. This is what I've settled for in the meantime:
