GI: BT headsets won't work with PS4, USB headset support requires post-launch update

No bluetooth is shameful and the first real strike against sony. there is no reason for them not to support this. it fucking stinks.

does anyone here have a really expensive, audiophile bluetooth headset that they are gutted won't work?

Because I thought most bluetooth headsets are small, have limited battery life and have so-so audio quality. A wired alternative (into your wireless controller) should be better quality and is included in the box. OR you can use a wired headset of your own choice into the wireless controller. Or you can use a USB wireless solution like the pulse elite, just not on day one.

MDR-1RBT, some users have it and I was going to buy one too. Incredible battery life and great sound for a BT set.

Will the 7.1 wireless headset work
The Sony Wireless 7.1 stereo headset, which was later rebranded as the Sony Pulse headset ($99.99 msrp), not to be confused with the Pulse Elite model ($149.99 msrp), will work on the PS4 but only after Sony releases the necessary patch. The patch is expected after the release of the PS4 however not on launch.

Sorry you probably got the answer already but this is just for general clarification since there seems to be a lot of confusion because of the rebranding of the original headset.

"here, let me marginalise the usage case of an open standard which sony have chosen not to support, while pushing a proprietary solution which will work an undisclosed time after launch!"

It's not just headsets though. Bluetooth keyboards etc. probably won't work either.

I think people are more surprised than anything else, on a technology level there should be no reason why they aren't compatible.

The fact that the PS3 Bluetooth remote wont work considering it would be used instead of a controller and wouldn't need the bandwidth of anything other than an occasional button press makes me wonder what the issue is. Maybe it is simply other software priorities, and other Bluetooth device functionality besides the controllers was something they decided they could leave till a later date when other more important work was done.

Thats a silly reason. Honestly, there are hardly any local 4 player games left; that shouldn't be something Sony is designing hard limitations around.
True

I wonder how the audio sounds from the controller, and if high fidelity audio uses a ton of bandwidth. I mean it's a logical reason, no denying that, but still.

Only in the US/NA.

In EU the Pulse Elite are called Pulse, while the previous model was the Official Wireless Stereo Headset.

Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up. My bad.

fwiw i know the skullcandy and astro wireless headsets also use this instead of bluetooth for wireless voice chat.

So, I'm a bit baffled, Sony's pre-Pulse PS3 headset won't work at launch, or at all? The chat not working doesn't bother me at all, as I never use it, but damn if I have to play with TV speakers for audio at launch, or buy a new headset. :(

Day 1:
  • Wired headsets via the 3.5mm DS4 jack. If you have a Pulse Elite you can use the jack on the headset to connect it to the DS4 for some basic stereo game sound and chat.

Some post-launch update will add support for
:
  • USB voice chat & first party headsets that use USB dongles. If you have a pre-Pulse Sony headset that doesn't have an audio jack you wont be able to use the headset at all until this update is released.

Devices that won't be supported at all:
  • Any wireless headset that only uses Bluetooth.

Phew! The rebranding got me confused. Happy to hear the older headset will work eventually, but it's annoying it won't work at launch. Killzone won't be the same through TV speakers.

Spewing. Thought id get to use the PS3 headset. I mean its Bluetooth. Isn't universal compatibility part of the deal withbluetooth headsets?

Especially within an existing brand?

What new tech has replaced BT?
BT. As such, I suspect BT is what we'll be using to connect accessories such as headsets and keyboards.

The fact that the PS3 Bluetooth remote wont work considering it would be used instead of a controller and wouldn't need the bandwidth of anything other than an occasional button press makes me wonder what the issue is.
I imagine the current remote masquerades as a DS3, which isn't compatible with the PS4. Rather than try to update the remote or teach the PS4 to recognize it, they'll probably release a new one, possibly with added functionality.

I'm not buying this at all, till I hear it officially from a Sony exec. Bluetooth headsets not working, doesn't make any sense.

Lol yeah the whole rebranding thing wasn't necessary but I'm guessing they they decided pulse was a better product line name than wireless stereo headset. If you don't have a good pair of over the ear headphones I would suggest grabbing a cheap off brand pair in the meantime. They should hold you until the patch arrives

Well, considering the audio will come from a Bluetooth connected controller, its still pretty much bluetooth quality?

Yeah it sounds fishy and I wouldn't be surprised if GI misunderstood the statement Sony gave them when they inquired about USB support.

I'd really like to hear the reason on this one.

Software support won't be ready for launch and it's not worth delaying the console over. Seems pretty straightforward to me? I expect many missing features on the consoles for a few months. They're rushing these things out.

I didn't mean it to come across like that.

yeah good point, probably similar quality if you use the DS4.

It's not just headsets though. Bluetooth keyboards etc. probably won't work either.

Another good point.

Well, I guess I could try the Koss Porta Pro headphones I have, if the TV speakers sound too flat. Although, I wonder how good the sound will be via the DS4.

I'm sorry, but I'm a little confused here. Will the official ps3 headset work?

Well fuck. I genuinely thought they'd support bluetooth. Admittedly there's been no official confirmation yet but that would be shit if so.

And I bought the Pulse Elite for TLoU but also thinking that they'd be compatible with the PS4.

Kinda shit but I can deal with it. Better not be waiting too long.

Edit: I know you can use the wired workaround, but it's not as cool, is it?

What about the PS3 gamepad? Does it work on the PS4?
Some of us speculate it may work as a generic PC pad, but nothing's confirmed and you certainly couldn't use it wirelessly or with any of its unique functions as a result.

EDIT: Got it in reverse. No, no it doesn't.

Oh well, I just googled it and looks like it won't work. It's strange as it's using the same tech to connect to the console.

No but it will have to eventually otherwise all the PS2, and PS3 games that make use of the analog face buttons and d-pad won't work on Gaikai.
You'd just force them to be registered as full presses I suspect. Some probably will need some reworking, but stuff like SH2, MGS2&3, and ZoE2 still hit 360, the first through BC.

Hahaha, I got it reversed. But no, the PS4 used an updated BT protocol or whatever, 2.1, and I suspect for quality purposes they want to keep it consistent. They've said that going all digital outside of triggers allows button inputs to be more responsive.

The annoying thing is that it shouldn't have needed "official confirmation". It's just common sense...

Glad I bought my PX5's now. It's wireless game audio uses the digital out, and the chat can be bluetooth for PS3 or wired for Xbox 360. So I can just use it like on the 360 and plug into the controller.

I post this again.

If your TV has a Powered USB port

Take the USB dongle and put it the Powered USB port.

Take the 3.5mm cable insert it in the USB dongle and take the other end insert it in a 1/4inch Stereo Jack plug

Insert the stereo Jack plug into your A/V receiver.

I used this set up presently I can watch my TV/BluRay Player and PS3 with my Pulse Elites. Wireless. The Audio is coming from my receiver not my PS3.

I'm sure this will work on the PS4 as well..

Won't do chat though.

Just because a device has a Bluetooth spec radio in it doesn't mean it also supports every single device that has Bluetooth. The company making the Bluetooth device also needs to include support for the device profiles necessary for those accessory devices to be used. Bluetooth HSP (Headset Profile) probably just hasn't been put in yet. I would imagine that it will be added in an eventual update down the road.
