GI: BT headsets won't work with PS4, USB headset support requires post-launch update

Sucks to hear, hope Bluetooth supports gets patched in really soon after launch. I'm going to connect my headphone amp to the PS4 via optical and use my AKG K601s or Audio Technica AD900 (which don't really need to be amped but will sound nicer) for audio. Then I'll use the bundled headset connected to the Dualshock 4 for chat. Assuming the game audio and chat audio can be configured to pass though different sources (optical and the 3.5mm jack), I should be good to go.

I've been thinking of getting a separate clip-on mic, instead of the bundled headset. Anyone know if they will be compatible? I don't know if Sony has released much/any info about that 3.5mm jack in the controller.

I have an older pair of Tritton's (forget the exact model number) that work via optical into the headphone amp. As for chat, it's compatible with both PS3 (via USB) and 360 (via analog audio jack on the 360 controller). I'm assuming I could just connect the the analog audio for the mic into the DS4 and have it work like that.

In theory if it's a simple 3.5mm microphone it should work. Can't guarantee it though.

I used to own them. The chat works via bluetooth only. To get chat working on XBOX360 you had to have a bluetooth adapter which plugged into the controller.

That's definitely not true, mine came with a white cable 2.5 mm on both ends for 360 chat. You can change between "Xbox mode" and "PS3/bluetooth mode"

IGN

Sony told Game Informer a system update would enable bluetooth and USB headset functionality in the future. However, you'll be able to take advantage of headphones using digital optical audio for games, but chat will be disabled until an unspecified patch date.

Game Informer
Any other headset that relies on bluetooth for chat will not work at all.

Can we at least get a clear answer.....

glad I picked up this

good news for me. I'm going to wear my Bose headset with mic that I use for my iphone. Should be perfect. And I can use iphone earbuds as well as backup.

So I've got the XP400's that I use for my Xbox (with bluetooth adapter), but they also have an option for a 3.5mm cable too. Would I be able to get a standard 3.5mm cable and connect that to the DS4 for chat? (as far as game audio, it connects to it's own wireless receiver which plugs into the optical out, so no problem there)

Edit: My mistake, it's a 2.5mm jack in the headset. Nothing a 3.5mm adapter wouldn't fix though.

Yes.

So... will my A50's work with the PS4 at launch?

Game Audio: Yes
Voice Chat via USB cable: No, but the system will eventually get an update that will fix this.
Voice Chat via the DS4 3.5mm headset jack and the jack on the A50: Should work day 1.

Thanks! As long as I get KZ: Shadow Fall single player audio through it, I'm good. :) That's awesome.

I'm pretty sure it's a 2.5 mm port so you would need a 2.5 to 3.5 mm adapter as well

I have the XP300s and that is a 2.5mm plug on our headsets. it's the same size as the Xbox360 mic input.

can someone confirm a three contact mic will work? this pic shows the PS4 pack-in will have four contact points.

People say DS3 and BT headsets won't work due to compatibility issues. But... Move is expected to work so that's not the case. I hope somebody from Sony will give us a good reason why those peripherials won't work if they want to keep their gamer-friendly image.

They aint ever going to support ds3 just like ms wont support 360 pads, as for bt headsets they will support them with a patch which could be at launch or soon after.

Ah, you are correct. So as long as I got a 2.5-3.5mm adapter, it should work just fine? Or even a 2.5 -> 3.5 cable, like this?:

I'm thinking it will work for the purposes of just getting the mic output to the controller and receiving mono chat audio back. If you needed to relay the audio from the controller to the headphones, you could never get stereo + mic out from a three contact point 3.5mm jack. I would think that the PS4 would have the option of either sending game + chat audio or just chat audio through the controller, which obviously you'd want the second case.
I'd guess Turtle Beach would make something similar to the 2.5mm to 2.5mm Xbox 360 chat cable which has a volume control on it, so you wouldn't have to adjust the volume in the PS4 settings.

The Sony Wireless 7.1 stereo headset, which was later rebranded as the Sony Pulse headset ($99.99 msrp), not to be confused with the Pulse Elite model ($149.99 msrp), will work on the PS4 but only after Sony releases the necessary patch. The patch is expected after the release of the PS4 however not on launch.

Sorry you probably got the answer already but this is just for general clarification since there seems to be a lot of confusion because of the rebranding of the original headset.

Just to be sure, this one right?

I can't fathom why BT wouldn't be supported at launch.

economic reasons. they can sell their own PS4 compatible stuff for a mark up + licence fees of third party gear producers.

what they'll tell you : "we wanted to guarantee the best possible experience on PS4. users will love the crystal clear sound of our new pulse headset, plus its adapter free. you will have both usb ports free for your peripherals while you enjoy your new pulse #YOSP" something like that.

what they'll mean: "for gods sake we won't let you purchase as 20 £/$/€ head set equally good as our we would sell you for 39,99. are you nuts, how the hell would we make this mistake ever again. MS could sell those exclusive x360 wireless headsets too. no chance. PS: Kaz, meet me at hole 9 #yosp"

I'm just glad I can use my Turtlebeach X41's for sound at least. I hope Turtlebeach has a PS4 cable for chat in the future.

Unless clarified/corrected, that's how I read it.

Astro Gaming stuff is still compatible with the PS4.

Having a Mixamp is the minimum you should have regarding gaming audio and it's already just decent. All these colorful Turtle Beach, Skullcandy, Razer toys are hurtful to see and read about. Even the Sony Pulse is just mediocre. Get a real mid-fi headphone + external device like the Mixamp, Recon 3D, Headzone instead.

nah, you can easily use any headphones with a 3.5mm cable, and they've said they'll support things like the astro later.

I suspect it is simply technical - they want to use bluetooth purely as a data connection and/or need more bandwidth per controller (same reason we can't have 7 controllers now)

The fourth contact point is used for control data, such as volume+- and mute. There are probably volume and mute buttons along with the mic on the blue and black component in that pic.

This is what I plan on doing until my X12's give up the ghost.

Alright. Time to clear out some things:

1. Dualshock 4 has a 3.5mm headphone jack, which means that practically any headphone or earphone sitting in your home will work with it, including Pulse ELITE headsets.

2. PS4 comes with a headset to use if you don't have one.

3. If you hate the PS4 headset and are looking for a cheaper alternative, Vita headsets are great and should work as per the spec. Best of all, they're only $10 and is a great piece of hardware:

US http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006PP3ZK6/?tag=neogaf0e-20
Canada http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B006PP3ZK6/

4. Pulse ELITE headsets come with a 3.5mm jack. You can use that to connect to Dualshock 4. Pulse ELITE headset will work.

Tell me if I missed anything or made a mistake or two.

BT won't work. Having cables is annoying

I just tend to use the TV to listen,

Hard to keep track of whats happening hear, that earbud thing that comes with the PS4 I can use that to chat online?

What I have lost is the ability to use a standard bluetooth headset for voicechat like i can for PS3?

Yes to both questions although I believe the Bluetooth will come later via a patch.

Well, if that's the case, they should give back the bandwidth to the headset when you play alone with only one controller connected. You don't need a headset when 4 players are in the same place anyway.

couldnt you just use any 2x3pin to 4 pin adapter for any basic stereo pc headsets? last I checked this makes almost everysingle PC headset that is not USB compatible with that controller......and you can pick up any of those headsets from $10 to $200+........

You know, after having a night to sleep on this, I support the exclusion of all those crappy bluetooth headsets on PSN. People think they sound just fine, but they don't and it affects the quality of online play.

But there's no excuse for not having full compatibility for the Pulse USB sets at launch.

What I would love is for Sony to come out and say that the Pulse headset no longer requires the USB dongle for use on the PS4, damn thing taking up USB ports! thankfully the camera will have its own dedicated port this time around, but it's still annoying.

I'm not reading all ten pages; somebody, is GAF responding to this news better than they did when MS (or M$ depending on your affiliation) said Xbox 360 headsets wouldn't work?

for comparison:

It's a different situation. MS announced that when they also weren't packing in a headset, and thus forcing you to buy a $25 headset. People are still annoyed by this, as wires suck ass, but they are still packing in a headset, and any headset with a headphone jack will work. So, no, people are not responding in the same way as to MS's news, but for good reasons.

Haven't they done a 180 on that and are now packing them, or is that Day One units only?
