Giant Bomb #9 | More Dan Meets The Eye

Jesus, that latest MGS is a fucking journey.

I never expected Dan and Drew to end up being the best combo on the site. I'd say their chemistry gives Jeff/Ryan a run for its money.

I like to imagine Solid Snake making all those Drew noises, now. Like how I imagine Mario making Dan's platforming noises.

Patrick is totally a SJW

Patrick is a white straight male who believes he understands the difficulties of being female or gay more than women and members of the LGBT community.

The problem I have is I don't need him representing myself or others. I have my own voice.

Say, have ever noticed that there is no picture of Jeff and Dr. Tracksuit together in the same room? That's kinda weird, right?

Not sure why you'd take offense to someone actually trying to empathize, though

Eh, as a gay dude I have absolutely no problem with Patrick and other "white straight male" speaking up for the LGBT community. I never understood the "I have my own voice" argument in regards to dismissing people who are not LGBT speaking up for the LGBT rights. You don't need to "understand the difficulties" of being female, gay or whatever to support those people and groups, you just need to have some empathy and be an actual human being.

I feel sad for Vinny that he somehow did not make the cut :(

I love Jim Sterling's picture there.

When has patrick ever said he thinks his opinions are more important the the LGBT community?

Dude likes to hear himself talk. He can advocate for the LGBT community, no harm.

As a white, straight male, this is the position I take on these things. I've always found white men immensely insulting and paternalistic who make it their business to rally the cause on issues that don't affect them whatsoever. And in regards to Patrick the irony that he embodies unabashed, like text book white privilege (like the dude is privileged beyond privileged) is always at the front of my mind whenever I see him take on this stuff. It just makes whatever he says on social justice issue come off as entirely disingenuous.

The image is so dumb but they used the best Jeff picture they could find.

The Jim Sterling one is even better.

It's almost as if they made a conscious effort to pick the least flattering possible pictures for the two most funny, entertaining, and likable people on the list.

Anyone know how to get on the waiting list for the PAX Prime Premium Member meetup? Navigating the Giant Bomb forum to try to find the thread about it is giving me a headache.

For what it's worth I feel the same way, except I am a racial minority rather than part of the LGBT community. I think it's important for everyone, especially people with more privilege than me to recognize social injustice and speak out against it if they have the platform.

Then again all of that could play into the whole "white savior" thing if it goes too far...

Do you think there's no way for a straight white male to speak about social injustice without being disingenuous? Genuinely asking here.

Historically, people from privileged groups have been essential in helping the causes of oppressed groups. People like Patrick are necessary for change. My issue comes from his hypocrisy but on a basic level I appreciate his intentions.

Couldn't disagree more. As I said, I'm gay and I love to see other people caring about LGBT rights, discussing those issues with me and others, supporting it etc. It would be a incredibly lonely fight for minorities if the majority couldn't/shouldn't support it/speak up for it just because they're not part of the minority themselves, and "outsiders" have historically always been incredibly important in the fight for rights for minorities. I don't need to be homeless to speak up for more humane policies in regards to that problem etc.

Agree. Everything can be taken to the extreme, but in general I think it's only positive when people of more privilege speak up for minorities. I have no patience with people dismissing that out of hand as just "white straight dudes".

That thread is locked IIRC because the waiting list filled up fast. But from Rorie's PAX primer:

We'll be having a little get-together on Friday the 29th at Metropole, a restaurant near the Seattle Convention Center. If you RSVPed, you should've gotten an email about this already to confirm your spot. (Subject line was "Giant Bomb Premium PAX Party - Complete your RSVP!" Check your spam filter if you missed it.) If you were on the wait list, we'll reach out to you no later than Thursday night about attendance. If you didn't get on the list or the waitlist, we'll let you know via the Giant Bomb twitter shortly before the event begins if there's any extra room, but it's a pretty tight space and it's likely we'll be full. If you can't attend, we'll be streaming the event in our chat room, starting around 9 PM Pacific on Friday night, and if you can't catch the stream, we'll have the archive up sometime in following few days.

Bobby Kennedy was even more privileged than Patrick, and he was one of the leading voices of the Civil Rights movement in the 60s.

That's not to say that Patrick has the clout or Charisma of a Bobby Kennedy, but a notion of privilege doesn't necessarily make him disingenuous.

For what it's worth, I do see where you're coming from with regards to this, but I think your reasons for suspicion are misplaced.

Patrick has a decent track record of admitting when he's wrong or misunderstands a situation. That alone goes miles in my book. As a straight white dude the very least I can do is listen with an open mind so I appreciate his willingness to do that on a big stage.

When the person is a proven and rigorously studied academic. Like, Tim Wise has never bothered me because his depth of knowledge on issues like white privilege and the oppression of black people in America is encyclopedic. That's an ally. When it's some 20 something blogger on his fucking Tumblr it's a lot easier for me to feel like he's just trying to trade on a movement, like an internet carpetbagger.

They closed the thread after 120 replies (100 tickets and 20 on standby). Unless you know someone I don't see it happening for you.

I mean, you're free to feel that way, but I personally disagree. Allies are always important. Seeing straight allies when I was younger meant more to me than I feel like typing here, so let's leave it at it, they can be important.

I have my own voice. But I'll gladly stand beside anyone else who cares enough to get off the sidelines and stand with me.

"An internet carpetbagger" is fucking harsh, and I completely disagree.

As I said, as a gay guy I like it when other people speak up for LGBT rights. It would get lonely to just have other LGBT people speak up, and wouldn't get the attention in society that a bigger movement with more outside people get. You don't need to be an academic to speak up for minorities, that's a pretty extreme view.

Anyways, going much further with this discussion might be too OT for this thread? I don't know.

Co-signed.

I have to say its weird that when Brad and Jeff are targeted by the MRA extremists they are happy to tweet back about how absurd it is, but when they are called out for being sexists running a boys only club where females aren't welcome they just let it go.

Jeff wrote a long piece after the Dan hiring controversy which rightly rebuked GB community members who were being hateful online, but didn't respond to any of the bad things people said about his own website.

My car broke down in the rain, on a busy road today, it was more entertaining getting that taken care off than coming home to figure out what the Internet was annoyed about today.

As for a straight white male taking on gay, social, race or gender issues, I see nothing wrong with one level headed human being speaking out about, and helping other level headed human beings. I would be pretty disappointed if someone who longs for inclusion and equal rights, chose to rally against some who speaks out on talks and writes about equal rights just because that person was different than them.

Hey, if you can point me toward someone with clout in the gaming community and the credentials of Wise, let me know. Otherwise, I think it's just fine for perfectly "normal" white people to speak out against this stuff, as long as they're showing the capability to listen and stand corrected (which Patrick time and again has shown).

Your argument bothers me because it seems like you're implying that unless a white person has immersed himself/herself in the study of social sciences, then the only motive they have for appearing sympathetic toward oppressed people is "hey you guys look at me and how nice I am," rather than genuine sympathy.

Anyways, going much further with this discussion might be too OT for this thread? I don't know.

You're probably right. I'll shut up.

You don't have to be a studied academic to have an opinion of "yo shit is fucked everyone should be equal regardless of race/sex/gender 'kay?"

Yeah Myggen is right. This conversation has certainly moved outside the scope of this thread. And yeah, I'm not pretending that my opinion is anything much beyond my probably overly suspicious nature.

I don't watch all of Patrick's stuff but I never really got that from him. If he only voiced his own opinion about stuff and that was it I might agree but he does a pretty good job at getting a large diversity of people on Bombin'/panels/live shows so they can voice their own opinions and he still wants to improve on that.

I'm not gonna backseat mod the thread in any ways, so people should feel free to discuss whatever they like! I just don't want this thread to turn into the Super Best Friends thread which is 90% off topic talk(spam) about anime and other random shit (says the guy with the most posts in this thread).

But I see your point, just don't agree with it in a more general sense. We can probably just leave it at that.
