Giant Bomb GOTY 2015 - Metal Gear Meets Its Mario Maker

The dirty secret of MGS5 is that there isn't really anything to spoil about MGS5 :p
Metal Gear's narrative is so focused on twists, it makes them some of the most spoilable games, even when the game has only trace amounts of anything resembling a story.

The Mario Maker bubble they played in was just too good for them. It's definitely going to be Mario Maker.

Sometimes I think that game was tailor-made for videogame press since having your levels played by others is most of the fun. And many "normal" players didn't have that experience, at least not to this degree.

Yup. Having thousands of players following your twitter and listen to your gaming podcast definitely maximizes that feedback loop.

As a normal player, who doesn't have those possibilities to advertise your levels to a huge gaming audience, you usually get 10-20 people playing your level, no matter what kind of level you make - unless, of course, if it's one of those flashy gimmick levels (automatic, hold run etc.).

I'm also disappointed that even Jeff, after announcing he just wanted to make nice, normal levels, succumbed to the temptation of making levels that are just barely doable. It's the easiest thing in the world compared to designing actually compelling and balanced levels. Those gimmick levels and barely doable levels clogging up the market place is what quickly soured me on the game overall. Finding good, traditional levels is effin hard and time-consuming. MM is the biggest purchase regret I have this year.

Agree with all your points completely and maybe I'm asking for too much but I hope one of the nine people in the discussion at least float these ideas.

Also, to ask again does anyone know if like during the regular podcasts someone will make timestamps, particularly for spoilers? I need to beat Undertale.

I absolutely love the Giant Bomb crew, but I'm sad that they didn't give The Witcher 3 a fair chance. They should've at least played it more. It's such an incredible achievement.

I hope there'll be at least someone to fight for it.

They did play it quite a bit, they just didn't like it (well, most of them didn't).

If you've followed the site for a while you'll know that RPG's isn't a genre that's very popular with them. There's a few exceptions, but in a year full of good games, it's not what's going to win.

Other publications and other outlets have already depicted the greatness that is this game. In a perfect world, GB would've played it completely, but what can you do?

Had Brad not pulled that shit with Destiny last year, I could see them letting it in. But now I think Destiny's goodwill has been used up, and the rest of the staff may be hesitant to give it a spot.
Well, Dan turned his opinion about Destiny around with TTK, Austin mentioned a couple of times that the game improved greatly and even Jeff thinks it doesn't suck anymore. So maybe this expansion is a top10 candidate after all.

Mario Maker is definitely locked for GOTY. I've never seen Jeff addicted to any game this badly for a long time. He won't let this game slip away.

Axiom Verge will be in the top 10.
True. Axiom Verge is going to be "Jeff's game" (apart from Mario Maker which they all like).

New list:

Mario Maker
MGSV
Rocket League
Fallout 4
Splatoon
Halo 5
Axiom Verge
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Until Dawn
Destiny: The Taken King

(11: Bloodborne)

Who would dispute this? Alex? vinny?

I think it's more about another game getting more support. Bloodbourne seemed to hit more of the staff, but at nowhere near the same intensity. That's frankly the only I game I think could dethrone it, unless Dan pulls the ultimate heel move and sacrifices Mario Maker to edge MGS V up the list.

It'll be in the conversation without a doubt. I just think after last year, the group may be hesitant to give it placement. I anticipate it getting edged out by Fallout 4 (which I think will be championed by Austin into an 11th-hour 10th place spot.)

I'm trying to come up with a potential top 10 list but I only got 8 so far:
Surprised you put Splatoon there. I love that game so much, one of my favourite games in a long ass time tied with Mario Maker but the feelings I get from Giant Bomb as a whole is one of Splatoon being a footnote. They appreciate the quality and the post release support but I don't get the impression that the game itself stuck around with them unless they're ask just quiet about it.

Alex has been very vocal about his love of Splatoon.

It's going to be metal gear.

Also mario maker is
not a game, it's a level editor

Only half joking.

Mario Maker is a game, but not really a NEW game. Instead it's four of the best games of all time.

Giant Bomb has said for years that if they could just give Super Mario World a GOTY award every year - they would. Finally a loophole has been found.

Alex has been very vocal about his love of Splatoon.

I think all of the love for Splatoon will be eaten up by Rocket League, which fits into the same circle of fun-competitive online MP games.

It's sad, but I agree that it's gonna be Metal Gear. Which is a sad affair by itself, but winning against Mario Maker and Bloodborne will make it even worse.

Oh well, it'll be fun nonetheless.

Triggered.

Yup, Dan loves it too and the others always spoke favorable about it. ("refreshing" etc.). I think Splatoon will be in the top 10.

Why not both? It's not like there are too many top 10 candidates (as in: 10 games that some of the guys don't dislike).

Yeah I was going to mention Alex, his enthusiasm hasn't gone unnoticed but I'm not sure if that's enough for him to speak out for it plus he is a bit hard to read in that regard. Is he still that passionate about it? I see Austin and his enthusiasm for Xenoblade as not being that much different but I guess with Splatoon that still has the benefit of gaining the attention from everyone at release.

He called it the best Nintendo game since Ocarina of Time.

I cannot see how Metal Gear wins.

Which is not saying much, lol .JK

MGS V might win with just vote count

Nobody seems to care about MM other than dan and Jeff but everyone loves MGS 5.

Its between MM or MGS5 or even Rocket league

I think there's at least ten games more likely to make the list than Splatoon.

Mario Maker
MGS V
Bloodbourne
Rocket League
Undertale
Her Story
Axiom Verge
Until Dawn
The Witcher 3
Fallout 4
Destiny: The Taken King

Does everyone love MGSV?

The Beast guys seem pretty ambivalent, Drew isn't enjoying it as much as previous Metal Gear games, Brad and Jason seemed to have big problems with the story and pacing in Act 2 on the spoilercast.

I mean, is there anybody as dedicated to that game as there is Jeff and Dan are to Mario Maker?

Why do people seem so sure that Rocket League will get high on the list? The Bomb crew's love for that seemed to drop off pretty much instantly.

Now, Kernel Space Program on the other hand.

I would switch Halo 5 with Bloodborne. I feel like they talked negatively about Halo 5 (especially the sp campaign) more than Bloodborne. Brad has been invested his time into it so I think he will fight for it to be in Top 10 at least.

MGS V might win with just vote count

Giantbomb GOTY has never been decided by voting. Actually they were openly against that idea last year.

Well, according to Brad Sauron Shoemaker Splatoon deserves it more since it's the first Splatoon vs. the fourth Fallout.

disgusting

I like Splatoon a lot. But it just didn't have much staying power with the crew. After the first month of release, the only reason it'd ever come up in conversation was to praise how well the post-release DLC was handled. They admire Splatoon, but not enough to regularly play it as far as I can tell (outside of Alex).

Side note, despite Rise of the Tomb Raider actually being the best game of 2015, I have zero faith it will make the list. As far as I can tell, only Brad played it.

What other games did they speak highly of this year (that were also played by more than one GB member)?

edit: lol I totally forgot TW3 and Bloodborne. They might not be in their top10 after all. %)

Ori and the Blind Forest or Axiom Verge also seems like they would have a decent shot. And Undertale if Austin makes it his "I'm fighting for this" game.

It wouldn't be the first time though that Alex singlehandedly pushes a game into the top10 just by not shutting up about it (which I absolutely think of as a positive) :D

That's how I felt. I might just like it more than Mario maker myself and likewise the reception towards it at Giant Bomb was positive but like you said the main admiration came from how well it was supported post release and they all seem to acknowledge it as a very polished, fun and fresh game but not one to diverge their glances from the big blockbusters but like I said, maybe they're just quiet about it. Would love to see the shooter of the year get some more acknowledgement. I shall see.

He couldn't even fight for Mario 3D World to stay in the chart 2 years ago. No way he could do it this time. I'll call it, Splatoon will not be in Top 10.

Well, everyone seemed to have enjoyed the time with this game greatly and they went back to it a couple of times during Unprofessional Fridays.

Nah.

I guess that's true. It just didn't feel like it got as much talk and attention from them as a lot of other games this year.

Usually, the GOTY stuff starts the day after Christmas.

Was there a reason they made it so late this year?

They didn't have a studio for a couple of weeks.

Alex is the false prophet. He let us all down last year. If Brad is Sauron (which he is) then Alex is like... Radagast.

Dan seemed pretty into Undertale, too.

Undertale seems like a game that could gain a lot of support in the room. Just describing the later events of that story could be enough to win over those who haven't played it. Especially if it gets plenty of talk in the days prior.

In the same vein I was hoping when going into this year that Dan would step up for his Nintendo support because his push for the DKC:TF OST was a hilarious fail last year and MGS seemed like a massive one for him but thankfully it seems that Mario Maker outdid itself.
