Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

With all the Patrick talk I figured I'd upload this random image I found. Many, many years ago I used to save thousands of images from online, for whatever reason, and while moving I found a burned disc with like 10,000 images saved on it and came across this while poking around the different folders:

I have nothing else to do with it. Figured it's sort of relevant here.

I always assume that Vinny's enjoyment of DBZ was in the same vein as Jeff's enjoyment of professional wrestling. Not active members of that fanbase, but rather just intrigued that this thing that they once enjoyed still exists. Not necessarily interested in the storylines of DBZ and the WWE, but the stories of the people behind it, and the stories of the people still genuinely fans of it.

That's the only way I'll be able to watch it. Eh, been kind of looking for an excuse to jump back in.

Wait...the monthly subscription doesn't avoid ads? Has it always been that way? I don't remember that.

Zero ads if you're a subscriber

Welcome back brah

I don't think they can turn off Twitch ads.

iPhone? The game or just the text? I am so confused.
You can buy the Japanese version on the US app store luckily, and then just drag a few text files from the iOS patch into the phone's folder. I just wish this version let you put the text on auto-skip.

Chivalry eh? Does that mean Drew's in? I think he really likes the game but I have a shitty memory.

Also after watching that Antichamber Ql, I need that game bad.

Huh, so maybe I had ads and didn't realize it since I never went to the site. I did the monthly from day 1. The way they are sporadic with content these days I don't want to do the annual.

It's so hard to be consistent with righteous indignation.

I don't know if ads show up for monthly members or not on the live site but they are switching to the new site soon so that may change things one way or another.

I don't know man. Nostalgia probably has a big part to play in Vinny's appreciation for DBZ(just like everyone else) but I dunno if I'd say he doesn't enjoy it anymore. I don't think he wants to play DBZ games anymore, but I always got the impression he still thinks fondly of the series.

I think if Patrick really wants to be open for new stuff he should also play Monster Hunter. He understands why something like Dark Souls is fun then he should also get that game.

Well, there is the fact that the only DBZ "content" in the last decade have been the games, which all tend to follow the storie everyone has seen a million times over. I'll be interested in here his thoughts on the new DBZ movie in March, if the West gets it the same time as Japan.

There's really not much to dislike about Vinny.. or anything that I can actually think of.
I was actually going to ask anyone. What's one thing you like and dislike about each member of the staff.

For me;
Jeff
Like - The fact that he puts so much work into the site, even during spare time. He is very dedicated in my opinion.
Dislike - Taste in games. we're usually not on the same wavelengths but I can respect that. So not much of a dislike more of a disagreement.

Ryan
Like - Nothing in particular...
Dislike - Can be a bit of a fanboy at times. Lack of content?

Vinny
Like - Everything, enjoy the behind the scenes footage.
Dislike - Nothing

Brad
Like - I can respect his "explore 100%" attitude as I am the same way. Love all of his segments.
Dislike - Not much of a dislike rather just find him to be on a different wavelengths at times.. which makes for awesome awkward moments with the rest of the staff. Can seem a bit selfish at times.

Patrick
Like - Attitude to trying out new things.
Dislike - Overuse of the word "shitty" and some of the articles that center around sexism in the industry because in my opinion they are kinda weak. Oh also, whenever alcohol comes up Patrick turns into a 12 year old.. and has to talk about how awesome it is to get drunk.

This is about the podcast:

Jeff
Like - Funny. Great sense of humor. When he talks on the podcast I stop what I'm doing and listen closely. Everything he says is interesting. Love his stories. I could listen to him talk about a pile of dirt. I even find his cynicism and jaded attitude amusing.
Dislike - His cynicism and jaded attitude can also be depressing, it makes him too dismissive of games sometimes.

Ryan
Like - an excellent podcast host. Makes it look easy. Good commanding voice. Interesting insights. Also a funny man. Plays off the other guys well and acts as a good set-up man for their jokes.
Dislike - doesn't seem to play too many games anymore. Sometimes cuts off the guys at the exact moment they were about to say something interesting, and then its forgotten. Argh!

Vinny
Like - An amiable man, but not a pushover. A man you wouldn't mind being in a foxhole with. Trustworthy. Clumsy sense of humor which makes it charming. Down-to-earth and reasonable opinion on games. Good conversationalist, doesn't overpower anyone to force his points out. I'm straight but he is a good-looking man as well. Also has a good sense of humor (they all do).
Dislike - Sounds like he has a perpetual cold. Sometimes doesn't talk and you forget he's there.

Brad
Like- one of the great deep voices in human history. Is not a laugh a minute but comes out with a zinger every now and then. Cool southern accent. Good vocabulary. Has good insight (they all do).
Dislike - seems grumpy sometimes. Also doesn't articulate himself well about what he likes and dislikes about a game (sometimes).

Patrick
Like - articulate. Smart. Knowledgeable. Insightful. Explains himself well.
Dislike - takes too long to explain himself well. Pauses a lot in mid-sentence. Too often dominates the conversation. I think it was this past Tuesday's podcast where Vinny and Brad barely talked because Patrick was always chiming in to whatever anyone said (to generally rehash what they said in different way, as an unnecessary clarification). He has a strong voice so it overshadows Vinny's, and Brad is too shy to interrupt. At times I felt like it was the Patrick Klepek show. Frustrating.

In summary they all seem like great guys. When they're on their game and in the right mood, it's the best podcast out there.

My favorite Patrick anecdote is when he once called the Nintendo 64 "old Nintendo." This is from the 1UP days. Shane's outrage at that was always great.

I think if Patrick really wants to be open for new stuff he should also play Monster Hunter. He understands why something like Dark Souls is fun then he should also get that game.
Dark Souls is a much, much better game than Monster Hunter.

The comparisons between the two are also a bit weird. Yes, they share a deliberate combat style, but otherwise they are very different. One is about adventuring, the other about coop and loot. Although I prefer Monster Hunter, Dark Souls is a much better designed game. Which isn't an insult - Dark Souls is a sumptuously well designed game.

Of the GB crew Jeff is the one I'd like the opportunity to sit down and BS with for a couple of hours. I can relate to his background and stories he's related. Including having had a permission slip from my mom to buy explicit rap CDs when I was still under 18.

And random quotes from the movie Heat. There was an episode of the Bombcast where he said "I had to get it on! I had to get it on!" out of nowhere, which is a Heat quote. I busted out laughing for a good minute over that.

Patrick gave us Orsin' around. Probably the hardest Ive laughed listening to the bombcast besides the Nintendo downloads from 2010 where Jeff goes slowmo.
