Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

A forgettable promotion is a bad promotion.

Your unwillingness to accept they made a simple mistake is quite extraordinary.

Your argument boils down to the premise that whenever Giant Bomb makes a factual error, any factual error, it is really the fault of whatever company or organization didn't do a good enough job of beating the correct information into their collective heads.

Expecting people to be all knowing is stupid, expecting to know what they actually know isn't asking much.

"Can you buy PS2 games on PSN?"
"I don't know"

That's all that was required, because clearly, they don't know.

I just don't take great offense to mistakes they made, I'm not saying a lot of people here are either. Giantbomb is personality driven obviously, and with that style comes a different set of problems that IGN or Kotaku for example don't have.

Jeff pretty much says that in his latest jar time video. It's strictly for business purposes, though.

I was coming from the angle of there being a Xbox bias on a personal level for the crew.

Quite funny how getting something so meaningless wrong means so much. It's about time Patrick made a public apology about calling Knuckles an 'Enchinada' too, right?

Having an Xbox preference isn't something negative. I don't know why people automatically assume that a preference becomes a bias. Do they prefer Xbox? Yes, they make no attempt to hide that, nor should they.

Vinny messed up the pronunciation of The Patriots true name in the Metal Gear Solid series on the Bombcast this week. Why aren't you people up in arms about this?!

I was more confused about that statement because I am pretty sure they even talked about God Hand coming to PSN at one point.

The fact that not one of them remembered speaks volumes about both the marketing & the quality of the content provided, & that ultimately is Sony's responsibility (not fault, responsibility). Also I have not once claimed they didn't make a mistake in claiming that PS2 games are unavailable, just that it was an understandable one.

It doesn't speak volumes about anything but their personal lack of interest. The level of marketing and the quality of the content for PS2 Classics is just as high as things they do happen to know about like iOS word games. The evidence for that is all over the internet. Your personal devotion to blaming everyone but them for not knowing/remembering about PS2 Classics being on PSN has reached a quite ridiculous level. If you set out to make yourself into a caricature in this thread today, you have succeeded.

does it? i don't think anyone actually cares.

It was a shame because it shut down what could have been an interesting discussion about emulated PS2 games on the PS4, but if all this discussion leads to Ruff Trigger making an appearance on UF then everyone wins.

Unfortunately no one there reviewed it because I thought them reading excerpts of Brad's Dog's Life review was hilarious, and I think it's something they should continue. Maybe they could play some old Tomb Raider games and read what Jeff had to say about them.

Reviews are just done on what the publishers give out, which is almost always the better version, they don't have any choice with reviews.

.

I guess if that is true that makes two of us.

I agree with this and I also like that they don't feel obligated to pretend like they are not real human beings with such preferences. I have a hard time believing that anyone who has experience with all the platforms has no preference.

You're the one people are laughing at.

Would be great if Jeff released the audio of the Jar time videos as a premium podcast.

I do a lot of commuting so having a extra hour or two of stuff to listen to would be nice.

Not strictly true, especially for multi-platform games with PC releases where the 360 version is the still the one that gets sent to most outlets.
Anyway I don't really get the problem with them only playing one of the console releases because most of the time I know it is pretty much the same game on both platforms, aside from some technical quirks which are better analysed by the digital foundry guys than anyone at Giant Bomb.

The Tested podcast had pretty good coverage of the PS4 last week, apart from the weird way they pronounced Gaikai.

I trust Tested when it comes to discussing hardware. When they start talking games, though, lol. I was sort of irked by how they essentially dismissed the entire PS1 library when talking about backwards compatibility for the PS4.

I would imagine, when it comes to PC, the variable hardware is enough to scare a lot PR firms from giving out that version unless it was specifically requested.

i bet everyone here is a total 100% expert at their job.
Well, they didn't even mention what actually came out this week, and didn't mention the Ziff Davis ridiculousness, so I don't think anyone listens to these guys for stuff other than them being them.

I can't speak for Giantbomb, but in my own writing experience there are actually several multiplatform games where we've essentially been offered "360 or nothing" for early copies. It happened every now and then, especially when dealing with a middle-man PR company instead of the publisher directly.

Tom Bramwell said pretty much the same thing on Eurogamer when there was constant complaints in the comments for their reviews 90% of the time being 360 focused. It does seam that publishers more often than not send out 360 copies unless there's something truly wrong with that version.

I meant between the console versions, although even then there's strange examples, like I remember Brad was reviewing FFXIII on 360 first, no idea if that was just because SE gave it out on there first, or he had both and picked that one, but if it was SE, that's an instance of them giving out the weaker version.

Actually, he's reviewing Tomb Raider on 360, and based on that GAF thread the other day, it looks nicer on PS3 (although it might well not run as well).

I think Brad has (especially in the last few weeks) made his distaste for playing on the PS3 pretty well known, but there's no conspiracy or anything. They just spoke authoritatively on incorrect information because they do that all the time. It is more personality than bias.

Pretty sure he had both versions of FFXIII and later regretted picking the 360 one.

Anyway, I am pretty pumped about the continuation of Blade Runner later.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered a hundred times already but I've got serious tooth ache and going through 3 threads and 100 odd pages here isn't my idea of fun tonight.

Seeing as the new IT manager at work has blocked anything gaming related I've been missing my Quick Look fix. Can you access their video feed on iTunes with a Silver Account or do you need a full-fat Gold one? Thanks in advance guys.

so guys Blade Runner in 90 minutes, huh

That's what I came into the thread to find out - it's 0945 Thursday here now! I want some random PC gaming silliness. Though I'm guessing it's on in another 45mins, 1030 (EDST) local time eh? Ah well, time enough to finish watching Jar Time.

And fucking seriously, this last ~100 replies worth of sheer inanity...

Also, for the GB folks who used to play TM2 Canyon you can now input your CD key into Steam. Still uses ManiaPlanet though.

Yeah, instances like this PS2 classics incident are why I have an issue when these guys all identify as "games journalists."

Assuming the mantle of journalism carries with it some prestige, but it also carries with it the responsibility to be well-researched and well-informed about the topics you specialize in as well as the duty to inform your audience as accurately as possible (and to later inform them if something they said earlier was misleading).

Now to be fair, both Patrick and Alex have done some wonderful writing and true investigative journalism, but frankly, these guys are far too loose with the facts in instances where they are clearly intending to tell the truth. This happens far too often during the Bombcast and occasionally in reviews or impressions of recent games they have played for it to not be bothersome, much more so due to the titles they all assume.

I've followed these guys for a while and been a subscriber because they are entertaining and occasionally provide informative content at the same time. I have no reason to believe that any of their content would suffer or be less entertaining from being more consistently factually accurate. If they abandoned reviews and th pretense of being journalistically sound and just focused on entertaining video content, I would be happier because I think they are better at that then at being games journalists, but different people want different things from them.

If they are honestly striving to be as accurate as they can be in their content as journalists who are entertaining, then they either need to step up the research a bit or be more willing to say " I don't know." instead of saying some BS in a convincing manner. Or if they don't care all that much about being factually accurate about their area of expertise, then they shouldn't call themselves journalists.

As long as they are still entertaining, I'll keep following them, but this isn't an area where you can have it both ways.

Not a single one of them remembered/ knew about it, that speaks volumes on the job Sony did advertising the addition to the store, marketing should be more than merely sending out press releases .

One of the big parts of being a journalist is doing research to determine the facts so that you can present the truth, regardless of how well-publicized the truth is. It doesn't matter if Sony had never done any kind of marketing at all about PS2 Classics on the PSN Store, the truth is that they are offered there (and aren't exactly hidden away either) as a basic feature and I would expect a group of people whose full time jobs rely heavily upon knowing all about the world of gaming to know something as basic as this, even if they didn't call themselves journalists.

Now no one is perfect, and I don't expect them to remember every single detail of every game they played several years ago off the top of their heads, but I would fully expect people who call themselves "game journalists" to know the features and general offerings of each current game system in and out, as well as being incredibly accurate about the features of games they've played recently.

If you can't manage to do that and only report what companies send to you, then that's fine, but then you aren't a journalist; you're a PR mouthpiece with some opinions.

I'm not saying this in defense of their mistake or mistakes in any way, and I know that saying you're not a games journalist is a pretty common way for writers for gaming sites to get out of any responsibility, but I really don't think anyone at Giant Bomb except maybe sometimes Patrick "identifies" as a games journalist.

But it would totally kick ass if they were less wrong sometimes.

Only Patrick identifies as such.

That said, given their approach to games writing generally comes from more of a "is this worth your cash, y/n" direction then a deep critical analysis of a game, they could probably know more. But they usually do. It's mostly irrelevant. I only get ticked off when they mess up stuff like platform or price since that's actually super relevant information to the consumer.
