Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

So is the DOTA TNT going to cause the most bitching ever about playing it wrong/commentating it wrong or will we be pleasantly surprised?

I imagine that just like when they do fighting game stuff people who don't ever go the site normally will go to the site so they can say "lol game journalist know nothing about games what a bunch of idiots." This will of course be on top of the usual Giant Bomb crowd who like to harp on Brad's supposed lack of skill playing video games.

Well, I know i'll at least be nice about Brad's skills in Dota. Dude is still learning and he's already proved he has the chops with his ranking in SC2 and his ability to play hard Doom. Also SC2 is certainly more mechanically demanding than Dota.

Now that has me even more interested in Dota 2.

In dota you spend a hell of a lot less time worrying about your apm and your hotkeys and a hell of a lot more with the mechanics. It's not complicated in the sense that oh you push down towers and kill the other team, that literally is the point. It's complicated in the sense that you have >100 heroes with 4 (or more) unique skills each and >120 items that all interact with each other. All the configurations, builds, and interactions are mind boggling. That's the part that scares new people from it when they look at it in the beginning, but it's what keeps people playing for thousands of hours.

Ultimately to enjoy watching it, at the very least watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akUNmFAzS98 It's four minutes long and you'll know what's going on on a very basic level tonight. From there you can start reading all the guides you want, or even play a few games if you want since the invites are so common nowadays.

I don't think anyone would disagree but mechanical skill in a moba isn't that important in comparison to a lot of other things.

There are a lot more factors that contribute to winning a skirmish or team battle, mainly because each hero is actually manned by a player who can do anything for whatever reason which may or may not be a detriment to you. A guy might not feel confident committing due to being punished early game, another guy might have a flash of inspiration and juke an entire team, another guy might fumble controlling a secondary unit making himself vulnerable for a second. There's a lot of fuzziness to Dota 2 compared to Starcraft 2 which is far more surgical and precise. The fuzziness can serve to obscure one's shortcomings (if you fear getting shouted at, or just mute everyone), but also gives that satisfaction of constantly learning something completely new (as opposed to refining execution) and after a while you'll even start anticipating "random" elements just by intuition.

do we know who is playing in the dota 2 tnt? they should have brad, vinny, ryan, drew and dave play as a team against randoms. that would be hiralious

I agree.

Sounds like Brad, Brad Muir and Greg Kasavin. Maybe Kessler and Drew as well?

Brad has also been playing with Sean Vanaman (Telltale/Idle thumbs) who is in San Francisco if I'm not mistaken, and Brian Leahy (Shacknews/g4) but I'm pretty sure he's in LA.

Who knows who will show up!

From the sounds of it, they don't have enough PCs. But a custom game with 10 players, all on camera would be hilarious.

Hey guys. I've never posted this here, and don't worry I won't post it again, but I figured there might be one of you interested.

Back at Giant Bomb we did Internal Affairs, and there was a pretty decent audience for it. Some people even asked for it to come back. Well a little while ago it did in a way with me (Ben), Nick, and Kessler. Episode 6(?) dropped last night. It's about video games in the most tangential way.

Give it a listen if you want.

I hope they shoot a premium video of Brad Muir going through the Magic Cards. Have the Storage Wars style counter at the bottom for whatever price he quotes the cards at!

I would enjoy that way too much. Especially hearing the others be stunned at the sometimes obnoxious value of Magic cards. Like on the Bombcast Jeff was like "it is probably all land". But the land could very well be the most expensive part of that deck if the Bayou is anything to go on.

I gotta say, tonight was the first time I saw "real" footage of Dota 2. I knew the basic moba concept for a long time but never actually played and never watched a whole game.

Looks interesting but yeah, I would need a group of friends playing for me to even thing about getting into it.

The chat rarely ever works for me either. It didn't work in FF w/o noscript and adblock, didn't work in IE, didn't work on multiple computers.

yeah doesn't work with firefox for me either, adblock is disabled on GB. seems to be okay in Chrome.
