It is, but its not really effective since it just leaves the other two lanes open and gold xp aren't distributed as effectively. Its normally something that done for fun and when both teams agree upon doing it; never to win.

There is a recommended items part of the shop panel, but it's hardly their fault. They don't know they have gold probably let alone how to even open the shop window.

yeah if you click on the shop there is a big tab of recommended items for beginning, middle and end

Dota is not that hard to understand if you've played WC3. I'm pretty Jeff has said he's played WC3 before and hated it. He's purposefully acting ignorant for comedic effect.

I've never played HON so I have no idea what similar heroes would be, but some decent starting heroes are Lich, Tidehunter, Zeus, Viper.

I think Electrician has no equivalent , Pollywog Priest is Shadow Shaman, Queen of Pain is Wretched Hag. I've been told these are not good characters to start with.
