Ok, I know I'm years late to this. Who won the Splinter Cell bet? I never got to the end of it, and I don't think I'll be going back to old podcasts anytime soon.

Vinny had to be right

Night vision goggles weren't in game, so the one who bet on that.

The Bureau actually seems super cool but if they're having framerate trouble on their PC I worry my poor PC won't be able to play it...

My post was tongue-in-cheek; Brad is a nice dude.

I didn't realize he had a policy, but I can understand where he's coming from on that front.

no sure, I don't think he has stated it is his policy, I was just infering. Some people talk a lot about their partners, some like to keep it private.

Ryan won.

They had thermal vision goggles in the game, which under the rules of the bet, did not count.

Wasn't there sonic wave goggles or something too? Either way they didn't make a big deal of it, I think they thought they cheesed it even though Ryan was technically right.

Solforge looks like a game where people bring numbers to a match and whoever brought the biggest numbers wins. I'll give the game a shot, because I'd really like to play an online card game like that, but it sure didn't give a good first impression.

I keep playing Yu-Gi-Oh games to this day, because you can have such dramatically different styles in building your deck. Solforge on the other hand looked like you have monsters and cards to raise the attack of those monsters.

Hopefully they'll do coverage of Hearthstone and Hex (once that comes out) as I think they both have way more interesting mechanics than Solforge.

I want a second opinion on the performance of that game, Brad didn't restart after messing with the video options as Jeff tried to point out a few times. It's a bit naive to assume a newly released game will run at 60fps with every option set to Ultra.

Guys at Giantbomb seem to know zero about PC hardware. It's pretty ridiculous in the Quicklook that Brad complains about performance but makes no attempt to fix it through settings. Their 670s are probably running off old software too. They really seem to just plug in their PCs and just press play, which I guess is fine because this is what some of the public does. But I'd expect a place like Giantbomb to be a bit more responsible.

They are like that for pretty much every game and every system. They make little to no effort to hide how little they know about the games they are Quick Looking.

Actually, if you've listened to past episodes of the Bombcast you would know that the fellas update their personal PC hardware on the regular and are more knowledgable about PC hardware than you give them credit for.

Brad probably didn't want to waste the viewer's time mucking around with settings that could ostensibly be a solution to the issue at hand (because that would not be very entertaining). If they are running off of 'old hardware' as you speculate then why can't we chalk that up to budgets, requisition forms, circumstances on part of the parent company (CBS Interactive), etc. rather than 'ignorance'?

Next time, think outside the box before you want to give someone a hard time about their job and how they go about doing it.

Besides, he tweeted earlier that he was turned on to a solution as a mea culpa of sorts to the issues he was having in the QL.

Oh boy. Did you not watch the whole thing? I don't think there is more that they could do during the Quicklook without ruining it completely.

Their knowledge on hardware is only about as current as the last time someone on the team has upgraded it seems. They were recently talking about video cards and the information they had was from the previous years cards. Which is fine because who goes to Giantbomb for latest PC news. I was just saying that maybe a little bit of optimizing before pressing record could go a long way. End product would look better anyways because that game was screen tearing a lot.

Yea, sure. By the time they start recording it's too late, agreed.

That...and also the game really runs terribly. I have a 770 at home and I was running in the 30s... Come on, it's an UE3 game, no reason for not being at constant 60fps.

He said old software, as in drivers. Changing settings doesn't involve a whole lot of mucking around in this day and age, and takes just a couple of minutes. Dropping down either AA, SSAO, or shadow quality settings will usually solve framerate issues fairly handily. Talking about viewers time being wasted in a 55 minute quicklook is kinda funny though :p

I've been playing an hour a day, and there is more to it than that. Understanding the value of activated abilities- such as Synapsis Oracle's ability to level a card in your hand each turn- make you change your valuation of cards beyond the numbers. Furthermore, there are cards that have different values at different levels- While Sparkblade Assassin is kind of weak level one, it becomes huge at level 2, and only gets a minor upgrade at level 3. Scrapforge Titan is a useless 1/1 at level one, a still terrible card at level 2, and the most powerful monster in the game at level 3. Some cards are awesome at level 1, but get almost no upgrades at future levels. Deckbuilding and balancing your deck is a big part of the game.

Alrighty then, I stand corrected; my apologies to Coldsnap on that part.

No prob buddy. I think you're part right. It would be nice if PC was more just boot and play like consoles. But really every game I play on PC I mess around with settings for a good 10 minutes before I actually started "playing" the game.

"Responsible"

I read that it's a specific setting that drags down performance, so it makes sense that Brad wouldn't have been able to figure it out immediately.

What still bugs me is during the Crysis 3 quick look they turned down anisotropic filtering to try and gain performance...

He was probably still wearing diapers when I started building my own PCs, so I don't see any reason to jump in here.

Quick Looks aren't about well-informed perspectives of the game. Most of the time the QL's they do they have only put a little time in the game. It's more so there to show people the game and have fun with it.

TL;DR don't watch QL's ever again if you want well informed videos. Watch them to learn a little and have fun.

yeah, GB doesn't owe Payday 2 anything. You can choose not to watch the video or you know, make an informed decision for yourself about the game. I don't understand this notion that they weren't "fair" to any given game. Why on earth would you care?

GB love SR3, I didn't particularly like it but I still had fun watching quicklooks and other content that the GB guys put together. quicklooks aren't reviews, they can be informative in giving a "quick look" (-___-) at a game and they're usually pretty funny because that's what GB has always been good at, entertaining video game coverage...

Performance aside, The Bureau looks boring as fuck. I gave up on the Quick Look 2/3 of the way through, it seemed like it was too dull for them to even make fun of.

yea i got that same vibe... I feel like it might be an issue with the setting... like the 1950s-60s is just kind of boring, they could have made the game in black and white.

and the combat, maybe they weren't "playing it right" or something, but it just looks like mass effect combat. I was tired of ME combat like 2 games ago.

Does the crew usually play with vsync on? I've certainly had some games handle vsync extremely poorly and have nasty framerate dips and sluggishness resulting from it.

holy shit vinny just brought up them replacing brad may cry with kingdom hearts, that needs to happen

Brad freaking out about that was pretty great! I don't think Resident Evil would work well, considering they take month long breaks at a time, and getting back into one could be rough
