Grid 2 quick look. Should have got Drew in for this one. He seems to be the most competent car game dude they have.

Edit: And just as I posted that, I realised Drew is still (?) on vacation, so they probably couldn't.

I'm going to miss Patrick over all but I'm not going to miss his Professional Friday game choices. ZzzzzZZzzzzz....zzzZZzzzzz

So, actively against used games. This should be an interesting listen.

None of them said they were actively against used games, Vinny did talk about how he disliked the way Gamestop buys back games for way under market value then marks up the price on them. They also talked about how not being able to let people borrow games would be a bummer, and came up with some ways that borrowing games under DRM rules would be possible. It's actually a very good conversation.

No they aren't lol, people are putting words into their mouth
If they were against anything it was Gamestop buying for $20 and selling for $55

It still is a skewed perspective. For whatever reason used games = Gamestop. I never ever use Gamestop to sell games or even buy used games. I would be an idiot to do that.

Vinny also went on to take a nasty tone with consumers who used GameStop. Blaming them for the policies Microsoft is creating for used games.

Yeah. It's kind of hard to take a value judgment seriously when someone gets a PC for free from a fan and has a Steam press account with all of the games on it.

You know, people wheel this out, but for the most part most of them have openly talked about having to buy their own hardware, as well as having to sometimes buy games by themselves for coverage.

edit: not to say that some of their stance are often at odds with the quite a large number of the game playing public.

Oh and add to this discussion the idea that just because it's digital the prices will go down. No they won't. There is no competition for digital games on your Xbox One. it's a closed network. What incentive is there to lower the prices?

Some people are too quick to wheel out the crazy.

I don't necessarily agree with it, but there is definitely a reasonable case you can make for being anti-used console games. It's not exclusive to Bay Area game industry folks and Microsoft fanboys.

Well there is still an incentive to generate revenue. Sony has regular sales and there is no competitive reason to do so.

There really isnt. It is just anti consumer talk. It isnt anyone's fault but the publishers that they cannot control their budgets and are losing money/cant break even on multi-million sellers.

Games on Demand titles on the Xbox 360 are the highest priced games available along with the fact you have to purchase online passes in addition to the game with EA games, further adding to the costs.

Sony are charging £60 for games on the PSN store, £20 above retail. Making that shot expensive beyond imagination.

Don't defend them until we see what they do as they could just as easily fuck us over on digital prices again.

lol I'm not defending anything. I'm making an observation based on the likely economics of the decisions they are making and the market they are entering. The video games market in general has shrunk and I'm of the opinion that making it more cost prohibitive to participate as a consumer in the industry will result in an acceleration of that declining operating profit. It's pretty difficult to attack costs and get slim when you are launching a new product on a worldwide scale, so I expect both Sony and Microsoft to be somewhat aggressive with their pricing simply to generate some revenues.

They are competing against other platforms. They don't want to be known as the place where games are most expensive, because they kind of are right now with their games on demand.
Also, revenue.

They don't mind being the most expensive for online play, do they?

Does anyone else think Jeff is missing the point here? Focusing on the buying old used games, this would be impossible with DRM etc.

I thought Jeff liked the idea of a place where all games could be collected for future reference like a museum.

People are upset about their talk of Used Games, but gloss over the scary fucking future Valve is playing around with right now?

Jesus flippin christ. Can you imagine if Microsoft was actively watching and implementing all those things Steam users seem to be shitting themselves over and spending loads of cash on pure junk then introduced those new concepts to the mainstream?

Used games are the least of our worries.

Hasn't Gaben come out and said that there would be a way for people to salvage their games if shit ever hits the fan?

I think he's too used to the possibilities of emulation (which could theoretically break the DRM) being used to preserve games.

He's also probably just irked at the second question claiming that they don't pay for games, which people seem to wheel out to criticize them.

Yeah that is a possibility, then there's the legality of the emulation which makes things a bit difficult to say it's the way to go. I might be wrong though.

Yeah the way some of these people are asking these questions is 'arsehole-ish' to say the least, the response is bordering on the same though. I guess I can't blame Jeff though.

Yeah, if Steam/Valve ever shut down, there is a "Master Switch" to release all the games people have ever purchased.

but I wasn't referring to that, but those Trading Cards and Valve taking cuts from sales between players and players charging an arm and leg for those virtual cards that are only worth virtual goods and those virtual goods that are traded are only worth virtual coin to by some games with in Valves virtual store.

Virtually.

So used games are only okay when the publisher's business model says they're okay?

We aren't allowed to buy or sell used games until after the publisher is done selling all the copies they want to sell?

I'm not on the up and up with the Trading Card thing.

That is a reaaaaaaaaaaaallly weak response from him.

Microsoft and Sony are already in the virtual goods market. They are selling avatar/home stuff to users at some. The weird virtual goods market is something I've never quite understood but I've always been able to easily ignore it and let the people that find some value in that stuff waste their money.

None of that matters, since it is entirely optional.
