Giant Bomb Thread #5 - We love you, Ryan Davis

I think Dave might have had some experience with the X series. I briefly dabbled in X3 but shelved it because at the time it was assumed Rebirth would be out relatively soon. That was like a year and a half ago. Seems like it may have been worth the wait, Rebirth looks absolutely sick.

Going by the latest Bombcast, The Last of Us is going to get completely shafted in the Game of the Year debates. Only two of them have played it.

they have like 4 months to play it. I dropped off my playthrough myself. Was enjoying the hell out of it but moved on to other games for no particular reason but I'm certainly going to go back to it within the next few months.

Well, it's a pretty dark game that launched around a dark time for GB. I hope that those in the staff that haven't played it come around to it eventually but I wouldn't exactly blame them if they're looking for more upbeat/less dreary games these days.

On another note: i hope patrick plays Gone Home during Spookin'. It's has one of the best ghost stories in gaming and seems like a great game for the feature.

Out of curiosity. Did Jeff ever do any kind of write up about Ryan? I only ask in case I missed it.

Edit: That first podcast back was amazing and it's not like it's necessary that he write anything. I'm just wondering.

No, I think his tweet said "someday I'll have something to say about all this, but not today"

Shafted in your eyes.

I've played 4 hours, love the voice acting but the settings/combat are so incredibly boring that I can't play more than a 20-25 minute chunk before wanting to do basically anything else in the world rather than keep playing.

Game would be infinitely more interesting if it wasn't just generic zombie setting #54532

I took my time finishing Last of Us too. I hope they don't mistake not wanting to breeze through something for badness. Haven't listened to the Bombcast though.

It had the unfortunate timing of coming out at the worst possible time given its general feeling and setting.

Even if the others did get around to playing it, I'm not sure any associations that may now exist will allow it to shine on its own.

Jeff has already indicated on his Tumblr that he's unlikely to ever finish it.

Good thing there are other outlets that will give that game whatever it truly deserves. It is tainted for the bomb guys

Did you make it to the end of Bill's Town? I was ready to put that game down and never come back to it after about my 3rd hour with it, but then once things opened up in Bill's Town and the characters started to gain some depth, I got super invested in the game. My GOTY now.

(For the record, the game is barely even about zombies once you get past the second major area. It becomes clear they're more just framework for putting mankind in a desperate situation.)

I don't quite understand how this is anything but a comment on Polygon.
Way more than 9, my RSS reader counts 16:

Every piece of zombie fiction claims it isn't really about zombies.
It's the human drama, man.

WHO SAYS I CAN'T DO BOTH

First I've heard of that game, but it looks like something we need to keep an eye on.

Hey Brad! I love Daily Dota, but is there a way you guys could look into getting the sound levels normalized? Your very loud, and everyone else is really quite, it makes it hard to listen to.

Thanks!

Being a professional games critic and missing out on TLOU is a real shame.

When its probably going to be one of the 3 best games of the year with the other 2 games being a Irrational games Bioshock and GTA its a real shame if they all dont give it a fair shake.

Former Starbreeeze.

It's right there on Starbreeze's website, front and center, though?

They always (try) to spend the month of December catching up on stuff they missed during the year, since there is fuck all ever coming out in Dec. I suspect at least one will attempt TLoU.

Man, August isn't kidding around.
Bureau, Splinter Cell, Saints Row, Payday, Papers Please, Brothers, Dragon Commander in like two weeks. Flashback and TMNT may be alright too. Good thing I don't care about Tales of Xillia, Europa Universalis, Dragon's Crown, don't have much nostalgia for DuckTales the game, or have a WiiU to play Pikmin on. Although I had to buy Guacamelee on PC to find out I don't care for that one.

I don't know how I'm not broke. Thanks, green man, I guess.

Oh right, Gone Home is out in like tomorrow or something.

To be fair, around the same time TLOU was taking off there were some more personal events which may make some of the thematic elements in the game not super appealing. They'll get back to it.

This can't be emphasized enough.

I went through a period of time where just a dumb, simple thing like watching the ancient in DotA explode at the end of a match would send me into a minor panic attack. Sometimes you just gotta step back work through your shit until you're comfortable.

They had a solid month to play though it before that. Even longer if you count getting the review copies.

I think it was obvious Jeff was never going to play it and then things happened and that sealed the deal.

Sucks but whatever.

Edit. Its real hard to talk about this without coming across like a massive dick. We should all end this discussion now because nothing good will come of it. Maybe Brad will yell at us and stop coming to visit for a few months again.

I'm not blaming him or anything, dude is busy and the game came out during an intensely rough period of his life, I'm just of the opinion that he'll probably never play it.

Does anyone here remember the credit card trivia Brad said on the Bombcast a few months ago? I know one was if you cancel a credit card all the credit from it is erased.

Every piece of zombie fiction claims it isn't really about zombies.

Like, in a "zombies are metaphors for something else" way or a "zombies are not really the focus of the story" way? Because both are perfectly valid, it just happens to be that the post-apocalyptic human-as-prey setting is really interesting while the actual shambling corpse monsters aren't usually compelling enough to carry a whole story. War films can be the same thing; often the personal relationships and how the setting affects them is far more intriguing than the actual battles.

I'm guessing that they'll get to it eventually, It's definitely an important game and one of the few AAA games that takes some risks. Hopefully it's not forgotten once next-gen hits.

Listened to the dumptruck with the EVO guy and barring the few times the audio went kaput it was really good.

Quick Look Solo LIVE!: Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches

assuming this is Patrick (likely imo since it has "Solo" in the name plus Patrick was the only one of the crew to complete the game in question LOL) it seems he is going ahead with the rename experiment or at least tempering certain expectations from the outset

I think y'all are 4 months too early to be moaning about which games got shafted for GOTY. You pounced on that guy for complaining about reviews that have not happened yet ...

Jeff has the wierdest hair type ever. It has so low thickness, it's like half-transparent, and when he grows it long enough, it starts pointing upwards all of a sudden,

If he gets low enough to the ground, it can detect if there's an underground water source near by.

Jeff or any number of them not playing TLOU is fine considering the circumstances, but let's not recursively excuse that with saying the game was terrible anyway.

Patrick should start doing Quick Look Solos with Alex/the rest of the crew just to fuck with the complainers.
