Giant Bomb Thread #5 - We love you, Ryan Davis

Yes, my dream of GBxGFW is within reach.

Jeff Green leaves pop cap because he hates what EA has done to the company and he wants to write for a living again.
Shawn Elliott gets laid off because it turns out Infinite went way over budget and Irrational has to scale back and start making iOS games to survive.
Sean Malloy leaves Blizzard after over investment in Hearthstone ruins the company and WoW shuts down for some reason.
At that point the siren call of internet games journalism will be too strong for Anthony Gallegos, Ryan Scott and Robert Ashley to ignore and then finally we will have 10 man, 8 hour long podcasts and everything will be right the world.

He was one of the producers on Alpha Protocol actually.

They tease him about it every chance they get (well Jeff does). There was that one day they were calling it "Matt Rories Alpha Protocol" and I think even this week Jeff says something like "every game can't be Alpha Protocol"...

I hear Alpha Protocol was the Brothers of its year.

Jeff Green at Giant Bomb would be a dream. I just want that man on a regular podcast again. The thought of Jeff Green and Vinny quick looks is almost too awesome.

If only...

You need to explain this to me, because I think you're crazy.

I just think he wouldn't fit in well with the way GB is these days. He's even said he doesn't play game like he used to. I'm pretty sure he's said recently that he doesn't care about video game stories anymore.

So what did everyone that likes wrestling think of the Power Bombcast? I'm really enjoying it but I've not watched wrestling in 10 years.

Man, that PvZ2 QL made me so sad.

I actually don't mind the monitization system PopCap (or EA) added to PvZ1 which you pay for the game up front, and then there's a unobtrusive microtransaction system to buy coins to purchase extra modes or upgrades in the game. These are coins you get pretty easily through general play of the game and you can still easily get most if not all the upgrades without grinding (aka good game design).
I've actually put money into the PvZ1 game to buy some extra coins and was perfectly happy with what I got out of it.

PvZ2 is like having your annoying friend hovering over your shoulder all the time offering to help you beat the game your playing every seconds. "Hey man, stuck on this level? I can help you out with that!"
Except in this case it's even worse because it's NOT your friend and you have to pay him to help you out.

I don't even mind requiring going back and collecting stars to unlock worlds since I'll probably want to do that anyways, BUT I think it's pretty shitty game design to force people to do that if they are the type of players that don't want to do that and would prefer to just play through the levels once and still get to see everything.

To make everything worse: I think the game looks great, I'm excited to play with the new plants and powers, and the new enemy types look like they mix things up nicely.
But as I don't own an iOS device and I hate how poorly the in-game transactions are presented to players, I just have to hope that there's a non-F2P version for Vita, 3DS, PC, or Android that will remove all the in-game purchases.
I will pay a full standard game price of $50 to do nothing more than to get a copy of this game without all of the real money store crap.
...But since they already have $100 individual "micro" transactions in the game already, I don't see much hope of a normal version of this game releasing any time soon. Not until they've rung every cent out of the iOS and Android markets first.

This free to play shite has become a fucking plague on the iOS platform. I can't wait for the day when all these shysters get hit with gambling legislation.

fukken GB got me watching Summer Slam tonight. First live wrestling I've watched in yeeeeeears.

<. < > .> it was pretty exciting

I have extremely little knowledge of Jeff Green. Are there some Giant Bomb videos or something I can watch to see why everyone seems to love him and thinks he'd be a great fit with the rest of the guys? The only video I know of is the Bejeweled 3 Quick Look EX but I imagine there's more content out there? I know of his past endeavors as well but I never really followed him when he wrote for CGW. I read the magazine on occasion (though I favored Computer Games Magazine and PC Gamer over it) but can't specifically remember his writing.

I feel like I'm missing out.

just go listen to all of the gfw podcasts

Wow, I thought people were making some big leaps about Green leaving Popcap, but that blog post basically pulls no punches that he doesn't want to be in his current gig.

It would be almost too perfect if he went to Giantbomb. I don't even want to get my hopes up.

I'm with you. Jeff Green is fantastic, but I don't see him fitting with the GB crew that well. Jeff and Jeff, maybe, but the rest less so.

I'm still holding out for Danny O'Dwyer.

When asking yourself where Jeff Green will go next, think not where you wish him to go, but what company EA is likely to acquire in the future. So my money is on Zynga.

Jeff should go to Zombie Studios. We know they'll hire almost anyone as a writer if Jessica Chobot is one, plus Anthony is there. Poor guy sounded so down on the last episode of The Comedy Button. He needs Jeff up there to mentor him at work. Plus they can start a geeky podcast together :)

Sorry to bring this up, guys. But I'm genuinely curious. We all know Ryan's preferred bourbon.. but what kind of cigarettes did he smoke?

Be well.
