Started and finished Brothers today.

I'm sorry Brad, but I've played lots of games better than this. The visuals and controls were the only things notable about this game. Very disappointed.

I get the vibe that Brothers is alot like LA Noire; in that it was emotionally resonant at the time, but as you move further away, you get to see the bigger picture and realize that it really wasn't that special after all.

All this talk of the Tested podcast and no mention that Gary said Brothers is one of the best 3 of the year? (I think it was 3, it was pretty high)

Technically speaking, you cannot actually say a person should have enjoyed game X over game Y. It's all about personal experiences and the way that we live them.

Brad may not end up playing 10 games that he enjoys more than Brothers but consider the amount of time he has put into DOTA instead of playing the dozens of quality games released this year. He is in no position to say that there aren't 10 games better than Brothers that have or have not been released yet. He probably hasn't played 10 games so far this year outside of QL's.

If he speaks in definitives for other people, then you're completely right. The argument that each person has their own preferences can be for both sides. On a personal level, however, he can totally say that it's in his top 10 because it's his own.

lol dude, who cares? It's his opinion.

True. But we know Brad is prone to hyperbole and premature judgement. When he raved about the game on the bombcast, it totally sounded like another one of those instances where he gets carried away a little too much.

His Skyrim speech will forever haunt him ... "They did it, they fucking did it!" :P

Let's see...

DmC
BioShock infinite
Tomb raider
Guacamelee
Dead island riptide
Heart of the swarm
Dead space 3
Fuse
Brothers
Saints row 4
Dots 2

Probably countless others I've glossed over.

Your condescension is amazing BTW.

edit: oh you're talking about games he's played thank god

It's not a top ten list of games he enjoyed, just a list of ten games he played based on looking at reviews + my own vague memories. :P

Remember when Brad was way into StarCraft? I was expecting more Heart of the Swarm talk on the podcast but Dota just killed it. Dota kills man...

Star...craft....the name sounds familiar. Wasn't that Jeff's stage name when he was in an amateur glam-rock band in the 80's?

DMC is going to be Brad's decoy game come GOTY time.

He'll spend a good amount of time defending it,eventually concede, and then once everyone is worn down...boom, Brothers and DOTA 2: Giant Bomb's co-winners for Game of the Year.

what does this even mean

the widow mines are the story

not sure why people are listing games that came out before Brothers, I'm pretty sure it was specifically between the release of Brothers and the end of the year. (as in there aren't going to be 10 games better that would knock it off his yearly list, not counting things that came out before it)

I'm pretty sure he meant that out of all the games released and releasing this year there wouldn't be enough good ones to push Brothers off of his top 10 list.

Which I still think is crazy. As of him saying that he hadn't played The Last of Us, Puppeteer, Beyond, Rain, GTA V, Tearaway, A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D World, Watch_Dogs, Dead Rising 3, Papers, Please, Gone Home, Saint's Row 4, Resogun, Arkham Origins and Raymen Legends, all of which seem like games he might love.

That SC2 is not finding and capturing its audience because of its own faults.

I doubt that. Not to say that Blizzard hasn't screwed up SC2 in a lot of ways but the domination of LoL and the rise of DOTA2 would have severely dampened SC2's popularity regardless of what Blizzard would have done with it.

Having it be a 1v1 game is pretty isolating and when there are two f2p games that allow you to just have a fun/serious 5v5 game with friends, then that option is a lot more accessible.

He has played gone home and SR4.

He played both by the last podcast, and he's still maintaining his position. :P

Also let's be honest here, he could very definitely bullshit his way (not even bullshit really) to including it into the top ten because it's all subjective.

I find it weird that people can't seem to accept that he just really likes brothers though.

First he said it would be top 10 for the whole year. Then he pretended he said top 10 for the rest of the year. Then he pretended he said top 10 games on XBone and PS4. Last time I checked, he is pretending that he said top 10 among XBone and PS4 launch titles only.

Soon he will be saying it is top 10 among games released on 12/31/13.

I clicked on this thread and must have completely forgotten that it was the weekend. Please carry on with this silly conversation about a dumb little comment that Brad made that hurt nobody. I'll be sure to check in tomorrow...

On the Bombcast the back and forth about Brothers between Brad and Vinny is funny and entertaining, and sets up some good GotY discussion points.

On this page it's generated some pretty sad posts.

Was DmC really this year? Holy crap. Feels like so long ago.

So, today was productive. I finished PVZ2 (well, finished all the levels, not all the stars or keys), and I had a fun time with it and I'm glad that I decided to try it out even after the quick look and podcast feedback. Yes, the game is gross with its prompts to purchase things, and hiding some useful plants behind paywalls (snow peas), but I got through the entire game with limited grinding and I never spent a cent of real money on the game and I enjoyed playing previous levels with certain challenge requirements (tip: if you hit a wall in the game when getting stars, remember to use your keys, because each key path has 3 stars on it).

Anyway, I played, beat, and enjoyed a F2P game without spending any money...

Then, I listened to the Player One Podcast where Greg, a father, bought a bunch of Disney Infinite stuff for his kids (he's not a reviewer, so he actually had to pay money), and he talked about how shady the entire enterprise is, with the toys costing like 15 dollars a pop, the blind buys where you don't know what you're getting at all in certain top sets, the cases they sell for the toys, and how the game isn't even that fun to play... oh, and exclusive characters to certain retail stores. His kids were frustrated by the game, didn't have much fun playing with it, and only liked the toy box mode; he found the actual character game modes to be really unpolished and "like a treadmill". And, the entire family is big on Disney.

I guess the point is if you can, try something for yourself (especially if you can do it for free), and be on the look out for the potential of favoritism.

On the topic of PvZ2, I was actually listening to the Besties today (Polygon podcast) and they talked (particularly Russ) HIGHLY favorably about the game - specifically noting how the microtransactions were completely out of your face. They felt guilty for not having to pay for anything.

Just proves how two people from the industry can have completely different perspectives and it's always worth checking out for yourself if you can.

(I've enjoyed my time with PvZ2 thus far without paying anything.)

Watching the Mario & Luigi quicklook... what the hell happened to Nintendo? When did they decide their games needed to have endless text bubbles full of lame jokes and borderline racist accents? Don't remember them being like this on the SNES. Even OOT didn't seem this bad, but now pretty much every game they release is text box after text box. They used to be all about the gameplay, man! Not reading stuff!

I agree, they've become obsessed, and it's really starting to turn me off of their new games.

Contrast their modern games with a game I'm playing now for the first time, Super Metroid. Didn't have a single line of dialogue outside of the intro. Good God.

The Mario & Luigi series has always been a little chatty but... yeah, I'm finding Dream Team to be especially chatty. I'm not sure where the change is coming from but it's bothersome.

You never played a Mario RPG?

But that was a action game, not a RPG.

Monita was like some sort of self-aware joke, too. Nintendo acknowledging their ponderous ways as being annoying... and yet they keep on with them.
