Monita was like some sort of self-aware joke, too. Nintendo acknowledging their ponderous ways as being annoying... and yet they keep on with them.

In the modern games industry when has self-aware humour ever been anything more than a shallow and lazy mask for perpetuating whatever is being made fun of?

But in this specific series (apart from the, truly awful, tutorials) and Paper Mario were always chatty, even post Square.
Most of the text is the truly awful tutorials or pointless flavor text. There was some of the latter throughout the series, but there seems to be more now, and it's infiltrated everything but the New Super Mario Bros series that's directly a homage to the earlier games. Even Luigi's Mansion 2 is loaded with text.

Well, different strokes I guess, I didn't got annoyed by it.

Either of the last two Professional Fridays worth watching? Heard the one before last week's was a bit bland but I wasn't sure if that was a conclusive view.

Vinny's game two weeks ago was fun, and he and Jeff had good segments this week. I've grown accustomed to playing them at 1.3x in VLC and skipping the boring parts/games.

Which I still think is crazy. As of him saying that he hadn't played The Last of Us, Puppeteer, Beyond, Rain, GTA V, Tearaway, A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D World, Watch_Dogs, Dead Rising 3, Papers, Please, Gone Home, Saint's Row 4, Resogun, Arkham Origins and Rayman Legends, all of which seem like games he might love.

I don't know, isn't that pretty much just Bubsy?

...that was pretty much the grossest thing Brad has ever said, which is impressive considering he also talks about slugs coming out of knees.

where's that $199 ps3 bundle with TLOU and UC3 jeff was talking about

all i see is this $260 bundle on best buy that's not $199

Started watching the professional friday from two weeks ago, Jeff says previous GTA multiplayer hadn't been very good :/ For one that's only GTAIV(chinatown wars if you used adhoc but lol) and that's by far one of the best and most diverse multiplayer suites out there. Spent dozens of hours in free roam and cops and robbers mode. Oh well.

Edit: Vinny's marketing/infomercial pitchman spiel is exceptional though.

GTA had multiplayer before GTA 4, GTA 2 multiplayer was most certainly fun to play as well.

professional friday

Hey duder, it's Unprofessional Friday!

Either you're leaving off the Un because it's faster to type that out and that's hilarious because UPF is way shorter anyway, or you just didn't know and figured you'd appreciate knowing the correct way.

I just saw it typed out that way a couple times in the past few pages and thought it would be either a weird shorthand for it, or just an honest mistake. Thought I'd point it out!

Ah, you're right and I apologize. It was in the PC version it seems which I never had until recently. Liberty City Stories did as well apparently but I don't remember it. Still, surprised to hear the view that GTA hasn't had good multiplayer. I feel especially bad because "for one" makes me sound dickish which I didn't intend, and now it makes me seem foolish as well :D

I'll call it a weird shorthand
I just kept forgetting to write it out, thanks <3

When did Brad call Rayman, Bubsy? I thought it was Jeff who made reference to Bubsy with Yoshi's Island.

IIRC It was in a GotY podcast where Brad tried to argue that if you played Bubsy, you have basically played Rayman Origins and other 2d platformers since then.

Watching the Mario & Luigi quicklook... what the hell happened to Nintendo? When did they decide their games needed to have endless text bubbles full of lame jokes and borderline racist accents? Don't remember them being like this on the SNES. Even OOT didn't seem this bad, but now pretty much every game they release is text box after text box. They used to be all about the gameplay, man! Not reading stuff!

By listening to people who had your complaints, they ruined Paper Mario for the 3DS by removing the story.

Yeah, GTA IV's multiplayer was surprisingly fun and diverse and outside of the main story, it gave a good place for the mindless open world craziness. The biggest issue with GTA IV multiplayer was its clumsy on foot controls but that was an issue shared across SP and MP.

On the topic of PvZ2, I was actually listening to the Besties today (Polygon podcast) and they talked (particularly Russ) HIGHLY favorably about the game - specifically noting how the microtransactions were completely out of your face. They felt guilty for not having to pay for anything.

Just proves how two people from the industry can have completely different perspectives and it's always worth checking out for yourself if you can.

(I've enjoyed my time with PvZ2 thus far without paying anything.)

Another perspective on PVZ2.

I can see why it doesn't bother some people, why I find the F2P stuff extremely unappealing.

Im wondering how deep people who dont mind the microtransactions got into pvz2. It didnt bother me at first and I thought brads reaction was overblown but the deeper Ive gotten the difficulty has really spiked. This is especially true when it comes to unlocking stars for the gate. I initially thought the coin gesture controls were way overpowered and refused to use them but the further Ive gotten the more key they have become in being able to collect the stars. I think this is the real hook.

PvZ2 isn't the real offender in that, it's Ryse and other games doing such things that cost money, then cost more money to avoid playing. Paying money to avoid playing the game you paid money for! And it disincintivizes good action/battle/progression design by not wanting them to be so enjoyable as to not want to bypass it for cash!

But then again, we ain't whales and the harpoons aint for us.

It must suck to have an addictive personality.

Re-subbed for a month.

Power bombcast was fun. Hope to get another episode before my month is over.

What are the must see UF's from the last 3 / 4 months?

Wow, that was some bullshit about Adblock. 'Piracy', lol. I think piracy implies that a copyright is being infringed.

Piracy is the wrong word, but I get what he's saying. You are depriving the sites their source of income and using the content for free which is meant to be paid off by the hits they generate with ads.

Amen, that was insufferable.

Chat wasn't having any of it either. I think people are coming around to whitelisting sites that they trust, but no one is going to buy the notion that they're pirates for protecting themselves from what the web used to be (a noisy flash-ad and malware infested hellhole where clicking the wrong link could hard lock your computer).

I do feel their pain though. It sounds like that's probably what caused Whiskey Media to split, and even though a lot of us do pay the $50 a year subscription, I'm sure there is a large segment that never pays them a dime while watching their videos and blocking their ads.

Patrick: "The booolllchevykes" lol

I laughed. Then I laughed at the ten different ways people tried to sound it out for him:

"Bowl Shev Icks"
"Boll Shiv iks"

etc.

If you were subbed back in April you've probably already seen this one, if not:

And the Rick Dyer one is great, but it's from February, so you've probably already seen it:

The last five or so with Vinny's FMV corner have been great, too.

adblock is bullshit.

Hurts a lot of people. Granted, Alex going berserk and filling up my twitter feed makes me want to remove him i still like Alex, i like his tweets and enjoying hearing what he has to say about most things. Going on a huge rant about Adblock on twitter? Isn't really the place to do it.

Still, Adblock is bullshit, piracy is bullshit.
