Giant Bombcast - 12/09/14 - Small Businessman's Encore

I hope Jeff Gerstmann stop your descend in becoming an old grumpy man.

I find it kinda reinvigorating in a industry where everyone talks about almost every release as "GREAT GREAT GREAT"

with the exception of a few podcasts, you rarely hear someone talk shit about a game. Even buggy releases. There is always an excuse

Holy shit, how do you guys deal with the poisenous attitude on the show? The Metal Gear Online rant was a huge shock to me, the first negative buzz I heard and they were just reacting to footage...these guys sound like they are so tired of games.

I couldn't agree with them more. We have entire studios dedicated to making amazing online shooters and people are hype for an online component of a series that has always had spotty gameplay mechanics? Get that hype outta here. People just like the graphics.

Welcome to Giant Bomb, where video games are unwelcome distractions from pro wrestling and bizarre hypotheticals.

I loved MGO. It's an online shooter with the Metal Gear quirkiness. I've also enjoyed MG gameplay a lot ever since Subsistence.

Metal Gear Online for MGS4 was brilliant! Brilliant!

Because who cares? Not like MGO is some insanely popular thing anyway otherwise Konami wouldn't keep shutting down the servers after a year.

Is not about when he complains about bugged games. This is GREAT and I like serious and critical people. The problem is a general lack of interest even for good games.

You do know an entirely different studio (Koji pro LA) is making MGO3.

I don't really mind the GB crew not liking MGO, its not for everyone.

By accepting that other people can not like what I like and live with it.

Not that I like MGO mind you. Saying that I like it will be grounds for slander.

But it just comes off as trolling, I am fine with opinions that I disagree with, but I was referring to the poisonous, condescending and wholly dismissive attitude that I encounter a lot on the podcast. It was the podcast version of someone coming into the MGO thread and yelling "lol bad controls and stupid story!!!!". Que nervous laughter as if we are all in on the joke.

It's mostly from Jeff, who sighs and complains his way through most discussion. I think what pushes it over the edge for me is that nobody on the show really disagrees, or tries to. It's a strange vibe.

They should've gone with a no games podcast after taping a bazillion hours of GOTY stuff....palette cleanser talking about fast food and movies or something.

Don't listen? They won't mind.

So they don't like MGO because they think its shit especially from past experiences and it doesn't jive overall? STOP THE PRESSES. :O

Also if the biggest fan there doesn't give a shit why do you expect the others to when their opinions on MGS is well known.

The thing about Jeff is that he has strong opinions on games and genres he doesn't really play or care about. I don't even play fighting games but I can imagine someone who does being pissed off about the Street Fighter discussion by people who don't play Street Fighter or fighting games

That trailer was terrible. Super heavily scripted, showing a bunch of stuff that will never happen in a game. I thought it was a co-op mode until I was told otherwise. That should not happen.

I never played MGO, and play very little multiplayer in general, but the new trailer seemed cool and kind of interesting.

Considering all the control improvements in Ground Zeroes, them having just a slightly open mind about the new MGO doesn't seem like a lot to ask.

Weird groan by Dan right when Yakuza 5 was mentioned.

Oh, a quick search makes me see that he really doesn't like that series. I see. I think I remember hearing him say as much in a Quick Look before.

And what if they don't care about the concept as a whole (which was the other sticking point)?

Was just gonna post that he doesn't like it even though he likes Metal Gear and its brand of craziness lol

Brad still pops in here, right? When is the all-email episode Jeff mentioned? I have an email but I'd like to wait until I have a better chance of it making it through.

IIRC its usually the bombcast before the GOTY ones appears so i would assume it would be next week Tuesday (the 16th).

Maybe Brad or even Dan (since he's been appearing a lot in the GB thread) could confirm.

I don't get this vibe from them at all.

Look like you are new to Bombcast. That's how Jeff is. He always has strong opinions about things that he doesn't like and praise what he likes to the heaven. He doesn't like games that take itself seriously. He established himself as a Metal Gear hater for a very long time so what do you expect to hear from him about MGO? I feel like the only type of game that Jeff still like are those allowing him to do dumb shits in the games. This is the guy that nominated Divekick tobe in GOTY list over SM3DL for Christ sake.

I think it's more that he wants to either have fun, or a new experience or new take on something. Like he said in an old episode, he's basically as old as videogames. Heck, he's covered games longer than some people here have been alive. So he's seen every possible cycle come and go, even if it's on newer hardware with shinier visuals. He likes what he likes, but he'll even recognize when something he liked in an earlier time doesn't hold up any more. I never get the "Jeff is jaded" complaints, because when he likes something, you can totally tell. Just because he doesn't like the same stuff as a community or other people in the room with him, doesn't make him as sour as some make him out to be.

I'm about two years younger than he is, and I see similar patterns in how I react to things. Seems pretty valid to me.

Jeff needs someone like Vinny, who tends to be positive, to offset the negativity. That made for a more complete show.

And no, "Man Child" Ryckert hasn't filled the void. Neither has "Dead Air" Scanlon. Hopefully they get some more talent in there at some point.

I disagree. Those two have done wonders for the site. Dan and Jeff's argument over the Terminator films was great.

The Driveclub thing was a long time ago man, let it go. Your hate for Jeff is getting kinda weird.

Tons of people loved MGO for MGS 4.

I'm pretty sure you hate Dan just because he has the audacity to enjoy Nintendo games.

Those people are broken inside

/joking

But seriously-making you register into those shitty Konami servers was the type of bullshit that made me completely give up on MGO when I got 4. It was even more unacceptable when it took forever to find and start a game.

But nobody on the Bombcast did. IT wasn't just "cynical old Jeff again!" thing either. Dan, their resident Metal Gear fanatic, mentioned how he never cared for the online stuff. It's just opinions man. Don't know why people get so worked up.

It just bothers me how Drew sometimes takes an authoritative tone about something he knows nothing about. And then the other guys need to take the time to correct him. This happens multiple times per podcast, and it really throws off the conversation.

I respectfully disagree since Dan can be extremely positive when needed, Drew fills his role as the plays some games but does some real life shit to keep things in perspective.

Oh I agree. I don't really care what they like or don't like. I often disagree with them, but they have a right to like what they want to like.

And when has this ever actually happened? This sounds something that Brad would do. If anything, Drew is very mellow.

Lol. I don't hate Dan. I like Patrick, and he plays his wii u in public!

I just don't think Dan's eating habits and bizarre lack of life lessons are as charming as most here do. "What's a mortgage?" Seriously?
