Giant Bombcast - Let's Talk About Memberships!

I love how even an allusion to pirating games is bannable on GAF but all the open talk about pirating the podcasts or videos is totally cool.
Downloading any videos from their site is no piracy. It's how watching a video really works. If you're not downloading it, you're not watching it. The means of downloading and where they end up can't be the differentiator.
You're giving them a page view in the process.

What else could they want? Repeated page views upon rewatches, I suppose… Not worth anything substantial if you think about it.

Distribution of the content is another matter, that's just not cool.

Just signed up. I feel like I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and back paying them for time I have enjoyed and for the next year I will enjoy. You have my faith to make it work Giant Bomb!

I signed up for annual purely on the basis of the informative video, I don't want any more normal community interaction!! NHS cant cover anymore of my internal injuries.

I enjoy Tested as well but I never created an account for the site. I guess now I can just link it to my Giant Bomb account.

Last night Will said they have no plans ("as of now") to gimp their content in a similar fashion to GB...so that's nice I guess.

yay! good for you

$5 or $50 to show appreciation for all of the content over the last few years is nothing
It's supposed to be payment for future content though, don't paint it as if this was a donation or anything like that. It's a paid membership with certain benefits. If you're paying for past content, you should really buy as many memberships as you've spent years on Giant Bomb.

I love the fact that the stream of hate has turned into a stream of people announcing their subscriptions. :lol :lol :lol

(And, hey, fair enough. It's understandable.)

As they described it in the GB-podcast: that's probably because it's just two WhiskeyMedia guys, talking for only an hour a week. Compared to the Bombcast, which is four guys talking for over two hours. That's a lot more time spent. I'm not trying to be an apologist here, but: honestly, the Bombcast is the only WhiskeyMedia one going over two hours, and the only one with more than two people on it. There's no reason to 'gimp' those other ones, then.

He has a point there. :(

I went with the monthly. I'll give it a month and if I think it's worth it for a year, go from there.

I really want to support them so I'll do this for the time being. Really do wish there was a cheaper alternative, despite the fact I want the Tee. :lol

certainly its for future content, but in my opinion, if you have enjoyed the site for years, enjoyed hundreds of hours of ERs, QLs, Bombcasts, etc, and you have a problem throwing down at least a fiver to try the premium site for a month, you are a greedy bastard.

I was totally shocked by the split BC when I read about it last night, but once I looked at it like that, I was all on board with the annual sub.

I look at it like I'm the boss of GB and I'm giving them a raise from $0 a day to $0.14 a day. 14 cents a day. 14 cents. a day.

Any chance that you reconsider your stance if they hit the 5000 member goal?

As shameful as it may be, that was a major factor in my decision to do the one month subscription. I wanted to add my membership in hopes that the Bombcast will go unchanged.

Late to this news and after reading through a good portion of this thread, I only have one conclusion.

But seriously... they're good and I like what they do, but I never have paid for a gaming site and I'm not about to start now. Hell, even if Gaf went subscription based, I'd sure miss it.

Not paying because I'm perfectly fine listening to the entire thing one week late. HTML5 behind a pay wall is pretty fucking dirty.

That's not an accurate description of events though. The content was as free as it gets. There is nothing greedy in accepting free content.
Now they introduced a payment dimension, and that's something to consider. You're paying for an actual product though.

This is what they actually wanted. They put the content out there for free, day by day. Don't guilt-trip anyone into going for a paid membership if they can't actually do anything with the product. That's just ludicrous.

Wow Kollar is one who took advantage on GAF goodwill with Rebel FM then slams the website in a tweet. Very nice. Talk about shameful.

Also, I'd argue the Giant Bomb Cast is an advertising tool for the website. This is not a sunk cost, but one which helps promote the overall website.

It's kind of shitty that if you want to subscribe yearly in the UK you have to pay an extra $10. Can't I just go for the yearly option and not get a t-shirt?

Well if the Bombcast stays the same for all, we will.

I just cant see them doing that now. If they come out and say they are not going to hack up the Bombcast now since they got there 5k members, doesnt that basically tell people thinking about signing up that they dont have to.

That being said, if you think Bombcast is worth supporting then support them with your money. I don't flood the NPR messageboards during Fun Drives and talk shit about people for paying for something that they can get for free.

Something is really wrong for me on the Giantbomb site.

I seem to have two accounts, one thats payed and one that's not. If I do a search for users I show up twice:lol

The accounts seem to be kind of overlapping too. Some pages show things from one (that has more site achievements) and then other pages show the other account.

Really odd.

Perhaps, but I trust the GB guys to keep their word. It would suck if they didn't do it and I can't see them pulling a bait and switch like that. They're always honest dudes.

I've signed up for an annual subscription, so it doesn't matter to me, but I still believe in them!

They basically have to do it because they were told the bombcast is too long and they need to shorten it. The compromise is the 1 hour it was going to be is free, anything extra is for subscribers. If they get heaps of subscribers though it'll mean they can make it completely free again.

Geez the site is getting hammered.

I think releasing their video download functionality, their membership signup and running their huge live show all on the same day, MAY have been a mistake.

I like the guys but to call them honest after pulling these shenanigans under the guise of added content isn't really honest. Just 2 days ago they were talking about how awesome Giant Bomb was because they could turn down stories. After the backlash they are saying they are in financial trouble. If they would have just said that from the get go, things wouldn't be so bad.

There is always a chance, but this whole scheme has really just left me shaking my head. I will definitely listen to that free hour for a couple weeks just to see what they have to say about it and how the whole thing shakes out. Hopefully they convince me I am wrong.

I think this is because the Giantbomb fee is covering all the Whiskey Media websites.
