Giant Bombcast - Let's Talk About Memberships!

Now that im a paying member, i feel i have the right to finally say Make Some Goddamn new Videos, Anime Vice! There hasn't been a new original video since like July. The blog has been ok but I will always prefer videos and I thought they used to make some pretty good ones. Besides, if a blog is all there is why would anyone want to pay money for it?
Wasn't everyone from Anime Vice fired?

They outsource their news to various freelance writers across the country and those writers themselves just source everything from ANN.

So does the HD content only apply to videos going forward or have they re-encoded everything? I tried a couple quicklooks in HD and they look the same as they always have.

They are actively working on making everything already posted HD. But everything going forward is HD.

I'm all for people getting support from their users, but there's nothing worse than listening to content that sounds like a telethon.

Giant Bombcast was already a bit too brocentric for my tastes, so I might unsubscribe.

Which is ironic because the site creator, Gia Manry, is at ANN now.

i just noticed something. in the t-shirt picture the sites are ordered by number of visitors (except AV) and look who is next to fall off the whiskeycoaster D:
probably just coincidence?

i was one of the angry ones at the start of the thread. but i caved in and bought a year's worth of membership. those people work very hard, they deserve it.

I don't give a shit about HD video.
I couldn't care less about a mobile version.
I'll never be able to watch a live show in my timezone.
Shit, I don't even read the other Whiskey sites.

But I've seen too many podcasts that I enjoy come and go. I'm happy to support them on that basis alone.

Just paid up for my monthly subscription. $5 aint shit in Pounds Sterling...under £3.70 or there abouts I think, and Giant Bomb has the best content anywhere about games so it's well worth the tiny outlay.

Also the downloadable videos in mp4 mean I can watch QL and the like on my Xbox. I'm a special case I know but my laptop is fucked so watching lengthy videos on my computer has to be done in 15 minute chunks before it starts overheating and I have to let it cool down. Since I am far too poor to buy a new computer or get this piece of shit fixed being able to watch everything on my console will be brilliant. I'm going to queue up some quick looks asap.

Viva Giant Bomb!

Well, I mean

That's minimum $20,000 in a day

It's not exactly chump change

Judging from how much equipment they use for their productions, that is peanuts. Not to mention the insane an hours these things take. Its no way its just 2 hours per person a week.

Anyone else finding that GB isn't loading correctly today - it seems to only load the top bar or the first few images and then stick. I assume its either me or teething problems with the new multipass system

I say good on them. Especially if they can keep the Bombcast free. It's a dumb ultimatum but they do seem like they deserve it.0

I'm getting a bit more than you but it won't load a full page, just the top half.

I really don't think Bombcast listeners are interested in audiobooks, Fords, go2meeting or godaddy though.

I also can't imagine the pain of hearing Jeff hock a sponsor. "I register domains using godaddy... ON THE MOON!!!!"

True! CheapyD manages plugs, though. Maybe there aren't advertisers interested in forking over the kind of cash to stem of subscriptions, but this is a targeted audience. Seems like an easy sell.

I think they would have benefited from announcing the subscriptions and then giving everyone a month free. So that everyone could gauge whether or not the additional services were worth the investment to them. Personally, I really had no issue taking money I had allocated to something else and moving it over to see what Whiskey Media would do.

I`m wondering if the mobile site means it`s a lo-fi version, kinda like the ``secondapps`` version of GAF...this is great for me because it displays well on the PSP so i can read the forums with it,when I don`t have internet access(trailer park)....hell,i`ll just try it for a month, even though I don`t like all of their stuff,it`s still really well made...

Man I wish you people stop being so cheap and buy the yearly subscription. It's only around 30 snickers a year, a bargain if you ask me.

It's not like those guys don't need the money. Whiskey Media can't manage to continue to have a budget to buy arcade machines without money!

There's a preview of the mobile version here: http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/general-discussion/30/giant-bomb-mobile-preview/439679/#159

(Also, I think the punctuation mark you're looking for is ', not `.)

What's with the Nicole Bass thing?

I feel like I've missed somthing.
Basically some guy posted a love sonnet he wrote for Nicole Bass, her man found out about this through digg, hunted the poor guy down and kidnapped his prize lama.
The cops were called, 4chan got involved and somehow scientology ended up getting the blame. Again.

GB are offering a service, like Xbox Live Gold, or PSN +. If the service doesn't provide features that you don't want, then anyone with business sense would agree that it makes sense not to pay for that service.

I don't have a mobile phone with an internet browser.
I don't have broadband speeds that make HD videos worthwhile.
I don't live in the same time-zone to make friday live shows worth while.
I don't want the free t-shirt - I don't like shirts with large graphics on them (I like to keep things simple) and I certainly don't want to pay extra for shipping.

That said, I do really enjoy the content the site provides and the guys really do deserve all the support they can get. I would much rather there was a donation button where I could donate an arbitrary amount when I want. That's all. I barely post on their forums, so medals and the like do not appeal to me.

I bought the iPod Touch app at full price and they failed to support it. That's about as much I've given to GB. I'll wait to see how happy subscribers honestly are before I consider a subscription, or even wait to see if the site rolls out any new features I feel is worth paying for.

It's a shame about the podcast, but things change. If the site has their hands tied with regards to podcast time limits then it's understandable they try to find a work around.

Yes, that's essentially what it is, however the multimedia stuff is HTML5 which I don't believe the PSP supports. This means you'll be able to access most of the content, just not the audio/video.

Okay, signed up....why am I auto following people though hehe....I guess I better start asking those questions over there in the forums now though ;) ...holy crap,I got achievements and all already ;) :lol

haha, catching up on the last few pages of the thread makes it pretty clear that most everybody that was going to support GB has done so and moved on and now this thread is nothing but a whiny circlejerk of cheap bastards watching the WM twitter so they can get their WiiWare releases on time

IT'S THE PRINCIPLE OF THE THING, MY ETHICS WON'T ALLOW IT

hahahaha

this has been LeDouche, signing off for the GAF thread update for the date of Friday the 10th of September

Also not everyone here has 50 bucks they can just throw down at a moments notice to pay for his. Calling people cheap because they don't jump on a few hours after the service launched is a bit harsh.

I'm sure this has been answered before; but how will the itunes feed work with the different subscription levels?

Pretty sure it won't, on iTunes you either charge from the beginning or don't at all.you cant got from free to charging whenever you want

the whole notion of defining who's cheap and who's not is silly.

every single person here is in a different financial situation PLUS every single person values different parts of GB content and WM family differently.

Someone making a big salary but who has no interest in GB beyond listening to the bombcast once a month isn't cheap for not wanting to support the site.

at the other end of the spectrum, a college or high school kid who loves all quick looks, bombcasts and all the other sites but has limited funds isn't cheap for not being able to pay up for the yearly membership.

Essentially, this whole push for membership is dependant on there being enough people who a) value both the video, written and audio content of giant bomb (plus the other sites) and b) have enough disposable income to pay for this subscription.

And when your most popular sites deal with comics and movies, it's tougher to find people old enough to have that disposable income.

heaven knows I'd be unable to pay if I was still a starving college student.

Thanks; sounds like the itunes will stick the free version then and the people with subs will have to download from GB then.

Only someone with years of dedicated training could construct such a sharp and insightful comment.

Wow, that blows.
If it does turn out that way I think I'll stay a week behind and use itunes (I'm very lazy and don't want to go finding the podcast each week and manually add it to itunes) even though I have the sub

On the subscription-podcast linked to in the very first post of this thread, Dave explains it all. There'll be four feeds available, for every way-of-downloading you can think of, so allowing you to download the individual parts, or complete shows.

snide said in the live chat on the day before the live live show that the subscription bombcast will just be a new rss feed to put into itunes. He was quite upfront about possibility that people will just torrent the file and he wasn't prepared to go through the route of protecting the mp3 somehow as he felt it was just not worth it.
