GiFTPiA confirmed!

Wow, that's ballsy - who's publishing this? Can't be Nintendo ... this game's just too quirky for them to put their stamp of approval on here, a lot of gamers won't get what the heck it's up to. Too wacky Japanese, even from the company that gave us Earthbound. But a good thing to have in this country, one way or another.

I'd flip for some actual confirmation of this. An e-mail from a customer service drone doesn't quite cut it. Take, for instance, this e-mail to me from Dec. 2002:

Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,

Although Kururin Paradise (GCN), Mr Driller (GCN), and Mr. Driller Ace (AGB) have been announced for release, none of the other titles you mentioned have yet.

Note that Kururin Paradise was a GBA sequel, not GC (and Kururin Squash was then just a gleam in Eighting's eye).

I really would love to believe this news, but I'm extremely skeptical.

The product description on this link lends a bit more credibility I think.

Special Features

-Experience an offbeat, colorful and stylish alternative to mainstream RPGs. Your island is filled with oddball citizens in need of your help to make enough money to pay for a new Coming-of-Age Ceremony.

-Use your freedom to decide how you want to play and what you want to do. There are dozens of quests, odd jobs and mini-games. You can go fishing, listen to the local radio station, fix up the town or give the locals a hand.

-Avoid the dreaded sleep ghosts! If Pockle stays up too late, sleep ghosts come and haunt him until he finally passes out. The more tasks you accomplish, the more mature Pockle becomes and the later he is allowed to stay out.

-Keep Pockle well fed to stave off hunger, too-hunger reduces health, and if he starves, the game ends.

Review

Giftpia offers gamers a totally new RPG experience: no combat, no weapons, no armor-and no clichés! When Pockle oversleeps and misses his Coming-of-Age Ceremony, he finds himself in deep trouble. According to the laws of his island, he has committed a terrible crime and the courts have chucked him into prison. But that's not all! Because he's a minor, they've even blurred out his face so no one can see him. Now, he's promised to pay an incredible sum of money to the island's mayor to hold another Coming-of-Age Ceremony. If he really wants to become a true adult, he'll have to learn some responsibility and help the many islanders.

Technical Details

Region PAL: Will play on UK and European GameCube only

Players 1

Retail sites won't research that stuff for themselves. I think it's at least planned for release by NOE now.

I can imagine Amir0x standing outside the NY TRU during the US Giftpia launch with a picket sign. "It's like Animal Crossing! Don't get it!"

Give it a rest man.

This is a GAMING FORUM on the INTERNET. I'll "give" nothing a "rest" because it's where I come to debate/discuss various things. Why would I stop discussing things I feel suck? Or things I feel that rock, for that matter? Right. :D

Erm. I thought this game was nothing like Animal Crossing, actually.

Someone else said that. Absolutely no one is saying anything about what the gameplay is actually like! It's like everyone is bound to some NDA! It's vague-central! I am genuinely interested to know what the gameplay consists of.

The first rule of Giftpia is that you don't talk about Giftpia. ;)

I've always anticipated Giftpia's release. The music won me over, i don't know how many years ago :lol

If it is released in Europe or the US i'll buy it up.

It's just annoying as heck man, the argument never moves from the same. "It's hardly a game because there is no goal or reason for playing, Blah, blah Blah"

Maybe YOU don't understand the reasons for playing Animal Crossing. Maybe your primitive monkey brain cannot comprehend the meaning behind why Bob the cat asks you to get his gameboy from 10 different people in 2 days. Perhaps you haven't achieved the level of enlightment required to communicate properly through letters with the villagers in your town. Maybe - just maybe - if you let go of expectation you would be able to grasp the symbolism behind why collecting stuff is supposed to feel rewarding in and of itself.

The goal and denstination do not count. There is a beginning but no end. It's all about the journey baby, and that isn't a bad thing. It is after all, only a game :)

I'm sorry, I didn't say it was hardly a game. Thanks for playing though.

I'm sorry it seems to me that you're the one that lacks basic reading comprehension. But pointless ad hominen attacks aside, I can "comprehend" just fine why Bob the cat asks what he does. I can also comprehend that from a gameplay perspective it's hideously boring and takes absolutely no skill whatsoever. There's nothing satisfying here that makes me, as a gamer, feel that I have achieved anything. It's simply going from point A to point B to point C to point D so that hopefully you can get a rug you didn't previously have. It is, essentially, "Gaming for Dummies".

Ok. hahaha. Man, I'm having a hard time maintaining a straight face. Ok... let's break this down...

Yes, that must be it. It has nothing to do with fucking horrible A.I. that couldn't tell the word "the" from "sun" apart even if God himself was writing the letters. It must be that I lack enlightenment! I also, apparantely, lack the condescening attitude to write letters that the piss poor AI can understand! BUT AT LEAST I'LL GET A WALLPAPER FROM THEM!

*spits out soda*

Hahahahahaahhahahahahahaha. :lol :lol

"Symbolism" behind why collecting stuff is supposed to feel rewarding!? Hahahahaha.

Oh *gasp* Boy, I literally :lol 'ed in real life. That was brilliant.

No, I understand why it's supposed to feel rewarding. I just understand that it doesn't at all feel rewarding since there are absolutely no factors that challenge any aspect of my gaming talents in order to complete. It's either trial and error or walking from point A to point B or playing some crappy mini-game so poorly implemented that you almost wish that they didn't even bother.

But, like I said, I recognize the game appeals to certain people. There are certain people who inexplicably like to play games where you collect things for hours and weeks and months without any change in the already tedious and strategy-less gameplay. I understand this.

It just doesn't appeal to me, and that is why I consider it one of the worst games this generation. I say that with no hyperbole.

I didn't say the game needed to have a goal or destination. Once again, thanks for playing.

And, I agree, it is all about the journey. Too bad the journey, for me, is damn near slit-wrist worthy.

That is quite the understatement.

In a sense, Giftpia borrows a lot from Nintendo's Animal Crossing -- minus the constant "get me" chores and emulated classics.

:D

Anyway, nice to hear the "minus the constant "get me" chores" part. That's nice. Sounds to be this is some sort of Animal Crossing-Harvest Moon-Fable(?) like mix. I'll keep an eye on it but I'm definitely still skeptical. I like the whole wish container thing. That's really awesome.

Nice to see you too Ami, good to see that no matter what the forum you are overwrought and dull.

Oh, it's nice to come to a place where people actually read long intelligent statements. Fanboy slaying is also nice here.

Anyhoo, why'd you come 'ere Shard? You finally give in because you couldn't keep up with being behind the times in gaming news? I guess that about does it for your whole whining diatribes about how tired you are about GAF being mentioned.

Did you read all of it? It's a full flegged adventure game, just one that borrows some interface concepts from Animal Crossing, seemingly.

I read it, the main difference seems less get me quests and an actual end. It definitely seems to have some big similarities with Animal Crossing, such as collecting items like mushrooms and such.

Well, I do admit I wanted to see if this place does indeed live up to the laudations that you have lavished upon ity back at the bridge for myself.

Wow, a point by point reply? Dude, I hope for your sake you didn't think that I beign serious. I did it as tongue is cheek as possible. I mean COME ON! :lol

Perhaps, but there's nothing wrong with collecting mushrooms. Especially loopy ones.

One thing that Animal Crossing did wrong, imho, was that with everything to collect, there was nothing actually to do WITH them. Here, it seems otherwise. Looks like there some puzzle solving to go with the adventure elements, or, at least, adventure-style puzzle solving. Particularly with the wish-container thing. That lends the game a questing feel to it.

Man, I was just OWNED.

No, my sarcasm detector broke long ago. I apologize good sir! :D

I do wish that there was still the occasional NES game I could find in GiFTPiA. That's the one thing I tried to stick with Animal Crossing for :P

Anyway, I agree with you. This sounds like a more well fleshed out product. My main concern is that the tasks have some sort of challenge/barrier/skill/strategy required to complete them. If this is the case the majority of the time then I will be pleased.

Him and me go to another forums together. Ever since I started going to GAF I was constantly teasing Shard about being behind the time on game news. He would get annoyed to the point where he'd write these things about how tired he was of hearing GAF mentioned at these forums :P It was pretty funny. He's actually a mod at those forums, although the quality of mod he is... well... that's questionable.

Mejilan said:
Can't you action replay or gameshark all of the NES games in AC?

I dunno. Probably. I'm like against cheating or something though :P

Shard said:
Are you still mad about those warnings and lockdowns I gave you?

Mad? No. I feel that the reasons you did it proved you incompetent, is all. But that is a discussion for another day. PM me if you like.

D...Do you wanna fight? Huh?

SO WHAT ABOUT THAT GiFTPiA!?

Well people aren't playing KOTOR II, and the MGS 3 thread is about stuff I really don't care a whole lot about. This was the only interesting thing I've seen here in a longass time.

Heheh. We Know Drama, huh ;)

I want to play KOTOR II. I haven't had the time to buy it yet. And I already beat MGS3 twice :(

If this doesn't come to the states, my temper will be hotter than the flames of Hades. Somebody better make it happen *shakes fist*

Roll-o-Rama = a part of Stage Debut

Stage Debut -> Revolution

Roll-O-Rama and stage debute have always been completely seperate games.

Roll = Kirby Tilt n Tumble (IE: See avatar)

The sad thing is that Gamecube owners here probably want this game, and according to most reports (like PlanetGamecube's playthrough), it's not very good.

Well, at least Cubivore was rereleased.
