With the release of the new Gintama season tomorrow, it was time for an |OT| for one of the best animes of all time.

Plot Summary/What is Gintama about?

Set in an Edo which has been conquered by aliens named Amanto, the plot follows life from the point of view of samurai Gintoki Sakata, who works as a freelancer alongside his friends Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura in order to pay the monthly rent.

Gintama is also mainly comedic and uses gags, with lots of episodic episodes but there are also occasional story arcs as well. These story arcs involve some pretty good stories with intense fight scenes.

As for the comedy, it's kind of hard to describe what makes Gintama funny. But basically there are really crude jokes, and then there are references which are funny. Gintama makes references to various video games, animes, popular people, shows, etc. But then that's just the tip of the iceberg of the wide array of gags this anime uses. But it's still kind of hard to describe without watching some videos on Youtube or having already watched the anime. Or read the Themes and Styles section from its Wikipedia page.

What animation studio animates Gintama?

Sunrise.

Does Gintama have a manga? Who was it written/illustrated by?

Gintama runs in Weekly Shonen Jump and is written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi.

Why should I watch this anime?

Well, you shouldn't watch this new season without watching the original series of course, since the new season is a continuation. The original series is 201 episodes though. But if you have time to devote, Gintama is a pretty original anime and one of the funniest animes out there that has some great characters with really good fight scenes.

What time do new episodes release?

Every Monday at 6 P.M. Japanese time.

Where can I watch Gintama?

If you want to support Gintama, watching it on crunchyroll.com with a paid account is a good idea. If not, eps will be found on other anime sites.

Love love love Gintama. I took a break watching it halfway through the first series and know nothing about the second series. Is it a continuation? Reboot? Alternative universe?

Continuation.

It's a continuation. They took a break because they ran out of manga to adapt.

HYPE

This is the only long-running anime I've ever been able to get into. So effing brilliant.

Would love to watch it, but I am like 10 episodes in the first series, with no hope of ever catching up.

There's no need to worry about catching up. Just watch at your own pace, because every episode is brilliant. If anything, be glad that you're not caught up. You have a wealth of brilliance to watch whenever you please while the rest of us wait for them to trickle out. :(

I stopped watching the anime a while back for reasons I can't remember so I got on Crunchyroll and started rewatching since Saturday. My favorite episodes by far has been the
Nabe Shogun and Hard Boiled Detective episodes
. I couldn't stop laughing from start to finish with those two. I've never read the manga but I feel the anime might be better than reading it IMO.

Na
be
poleon!

the mind game battle episodes are the best :D

I really love Gintama but I hate when it tries to be serious. It's always so cliché and silly that it becomes awkward to watch...
The serious arcs are the worst, stick to the funny stuff please ! :(

Anyway, only 96 more episodes to go.. yay !

:lol @ the OVA

Didn't they pull a similar thing with the benizakura one though?

What do you mean? They really did make a movie out of the Benizakura arc.

If I recall correctly, in one of the anime episodes they ran a little "trailer" for the Benizakura movie, and then at the end of it they were like "haha just kidding we're not getting a movie." And then they made the movie.

I could be completely wrong.

Yeah they did that. Then they did it again with a trailer for a shinsengumi movie at the end of the Benizakura movie. I'm still not sure whether that will be made or not. The Shiroyasha Koutan thing actually being made is very unlikely though. As far as I know there is no manga that covers that part of the story yet so it's not going to happen unless Sunrise make it up themselves and I seriously doubt they could or would.

fuck yeah gintama! Although I'm quite behind by tons of episodes,I'll just watch the conitinuation, its not I'm missing out any important stuff, their daily shitcks is still the same.

I watched the first 10ish episodes of season 1 or whatever you'd call that first run and they seemed fairly stand-alone. It'd be okay to just jump into this new season?

Well the stand alone ones are fine. But some arcs tie into each other so you'd have to watch older eps for those.

Always wanted to watch this show but was so daunted by the sheer number of episodes it had, will follow this version though.

It's not a new version, it just went on break and is back now.

Wait...it's coming back? And tomorrow! Yes!

Anyway, I love this show...I think I only have about 25 episodes left of the pre-hiatus series to watch, so glad to see by the time I get through those I'll have a whole new bunch to watch.

I think my favorite character in the series is probably...Justaway!

The first arc of this return of the anime is a timeskip with several humorous moments coming from how different the characters are from how they should be(at least, in the manga version - they're animating this out of order, so they might be changing more stuff).

There were other jokes, of course, but some scenes probably won't make much sense if you don't know about the characters beforehand.

Came into the thread with anticipation, left with great sorrow learning that there's 202 necessary episodes to watch. That's waaaay too much.

That's a silly way of thinking. If you end up liking the show, then having lots of episodes to watch is a good thing. If you don't like the show, then it doesn't really matter how many episodes there are.

New != better.

Tell that to Branduil.

About damn time Gintama got it's own OT on gaf. Just watched the movie recently and I was pleasantly surprised with the new stuff they added for the Benizakura arc, especially the amazing fight scene at the end.

Theme song is running in my head

daeu daeu daeu daeuuu daeuu daeu daeu daeu daeuuu daeuu daeu daeu daewdaew daeuuu daeuu daeuu

Rerurn of Gintama
We had to do this as the author ran out of money

You people make no sense. You don't want to be caught up! You want to watch those 202 episodes of sheer comedic brilliance!

I would gladly trade places with someone who has yet to watch all of (existing) Gintama.

Can't wait for more bitching about running out of production budget, so they can justify showing a single panel for half the episode.
