It's a bit of both. It's understandable, but it can also be kind of awkward. Depends on the situation. Mutual grinding/you grinding on him= not totally awkward. Some random guy just starts grinding on you = not so good.

I'm just awkward all around, though, so when the boner rises, that's my cue to slowly ease out of the dance. Not a big deal for other women, though.

Well yeah obviously I meant when you are grinding. And that wouldnt be the most awkward place I've seen one pop.

And size isn't that easy to measure because of belts.
 
I think a woman who is at all aware of how sexuality works, would not get upset if she were grinding on you and you got a little something there. It probably varies from woman to woman - from neutral to complimented (is my guess).

That being said, don't worry about it, I don't think girls think about it nearly as much as guys worry about it. A girl once told me that how a guy dances has the potential to be more arousing than if the guy has wood or anything.

I've had my share of grinding boners. Last time I went to a GAF meet up, it happened while I was grinding up on a chick who knew how to move. Suffice to say, I think the chick got into it more when she felt it. There's nothing wrong with that given that all humans get aroused in some kind of form or another. Like Anti-Monitor, it's fun in the end of the day. Since grinding is a sensual dance, it's bound to happen; preferably with a woman who is not a friend and can dance decently.

Weirdest context I got a boner has been by playing video games. To contextualize it more, it wasn't really virtual women; I got a boner out of just beating up guys in James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing. Of course, this happened when I was in my teenage years. Isn't that strange?

In my experiences chicks either embrace it and GO IN or they get all indignant and pretend like that isn't the purpose of grinding.

Oh, I've never just started randomly grinding on a girl. I try to feel her out and let her make the first move (presses her butt up against me) then go from there. But if she isn't pressing, then neither am I....and we're just "dancing" or barely grinding at all.

I don't want to be a creep :)

Dancing is awkward for me not because of the boner, but because I lack rhythm. The grinding boner actually eases the tension, if anything. >.<
 
I get boners all the time when I dance with a hot girl. I don't give a shit, I just keep dancing. It's part of the fun.
