Glenn Beck tries out Decency

My hope that even the worst of personalities can learn and better themselves through critical introspection. We need to remember to understand what drives irrational behavior and find ways to help reduce such ideology.

I'm trying hard to believe him.

But then I think of how desperate people are like chameleons. They'll change on a dime to get a job.

I don't know.. this is a pretty extreme change to the point where it makes no sense for him to do it(because he wouldn't be appealing to any corner of the conservative/republican demographic). The language he uses makes me think he's being genuine. I think people in here are being too harsh, the guy seems to have been turning his act around the last couple of years. It makes sense to be a bit wary but I see no reason we shouldn't give him the benefit of the doubt.

I like how he says the one simple thing that helped him understand BLM that I tell diet racist posters here daily: just listen to people. Even if you think you already are, you could probably do better at it. People are fucking terrible listeners, and it makes us hateful.

Also, listening to that interview, with his routine taken out of context, you can hear the theater Beck puts into every word he says on the radio. He's got his voice EQed to give it more bass and gravitas, and he crafts his phrases and sentences to manipulate the listener as much as possible. He's talented, but he is what he is.

Also, it's funny how a weird little event is what made him realize that Trump is unhinged, and not, you know, all of the other heinous shit that Trump has done since running for president (and before that).

Its allllllllllllllll theater, and people are constantly getting worked by it when they think they're above it. Everyone was saying and thinking the same about Trump for the first half of the election. Remember all the "it's not funny anymore" moments?

If we're going to trash the guy and act like people who hold the beliefs that made him famous can't change, then we might as well go ahead and burn this whole thing down because 40+% of the country is about to vote for Trump.

Thanks for saying this stuff, Glenn. I know that's going to throw a lot of people I know personally who followed you religiously for a loop and they definitely need that.

I think it's the fact that it was a "one-on-one" meeting between the two and not just Donald saying crazy shit in public for attention. "Meeting" him away from cameras made him realize that, oh shit, this isn't an act, Trump is legit crazy. I mean, he made Beck go to a hotel room, and then called him on the hotel phone from the next room over instead of, you know, talking to him face-to-face like a human being. What the fuck, who does shit like that?

I'm sure his failing media business has nothing to to do with this new schtick Beck is wheeling out. Fuck this guy until the heat death of the universe.

What's he doing with all the money he made shitting on Obama and helping to cultivate this political environment that's allowed someone like Trump to seriously run for president?

This line cracked me up:
He left convinced that Trump was nuts. “This guy is dangerously unhinged,” he said. “And, for all the things people have said about me over the years, I should be able to spot Dangerously Unhinged.”

This line is pretty interesting to pick apart though:

Beck, who was wearing a cardigan, a cream-colored scarf, and green pants, was flanked by two bodyguards. The alt-right sees him as a turncoat. He receives death threats. “These people scare the hell out of me,” he said. Some of them are his former followers, perhaps angry at him for disowning their beliefs while continuing to cash in on their insecurities. (Beck’s Web site still runs ads for goods favored by survivalists—gold ingots, concealed-gun harnesses, and food kits called My Patriot Supply.)

The cynical reaction is obviously that he's courting both sides or trying to make money looking for a new side. Whatever the case, hopefully he gets some new advertisers and his behavior starts matching his words. I'm not sure what the laws are in his state, but it'd be hilarious to see him take a picture of his ballot marked "Clinton" tomorrow and post it on social media.

It's insanely sad that even a guy like him who's still conservative at heart is now receiving death threats for expressing any amount of respect towards BLM or minorities as a whole.

It's the self cannibalistic shit like this that makes the alt right and conservatism as a whole feel like two different entities that the latter should be trying to distance itself from.

No one deserves death threats.

This isn't an easy thing to do at this point. Taking a stand for BLM isn't going to suddenly get him a ton of new followers. He'll surely lose a lot more support than he'll gain. I'm not saying he's 100% genuine, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now. At least there's another prominent white voice in support of BLM, which is something that the world sorely needs.

To be fair, Alex Jones isn't a low-key Republican shill like Beck or Hannity types, he's a conspiracy wonk.

Show him footage of Trump dancing naked under a giant wooden owl at the Bohemian Grove (or something that at least looks vaguely like it could be him) and he'll turn heel on him in seconds.

but hillary cast a spell on him probably

Well he made a cottage industry over Obama hysteria. Not just yelling into a microphone all day but selling folks on doomsday... even the most dyed in the wool teabaggers called bullshit when it never happened now his enterprise is in shambles. Pretty much has no choice to admit he hedged his bets wrong

But at least he isn't doubling down like hannity, who's about to go house on fire apeshit.

It's hard for me to trust that Glenn Beck is trying out anything but monetary expediency. If he is coming around to some more liberal viewpoint publicly it must mean that there is no longer any money in pandering to conservatives.

Ehh, fuck him.

He's not trying out decency. He's throwing everything at the wall to see what will stick and save his pathetic media empire.

Sorry, but I don't have much respect for con-men and those that peddle snake oil for a buck.

If that were true, he'd inch closer to Trump. His empire wants nothing to do with him because he can't stand Trump.

He's much more of a conspiracy nut than a shill in my book.

People can change. David Brock used to be virulently against the Clintons, but now runs a pro-Hillary super PAC and the liberal Media Matters.

I don't know what's scarier: that all this insanity has made GLENN FRICKIN' BECK step back and re-asses his words and deeds, or that very few other conservatives are doing the same...

I've heard about a few conservative talk radio hosts stepping back and thinking about the effect of their words and actions. None going as far as Beck, but...

The beast he helped raise has outgrown him. He was there in 08 saying Obama would be the destruction of America and peddled gold and food insurance for the inevitable collapse of society. He started the blaze and asked his audience to follow him from Fox News.

Wow, how shocking his audience went more hardcore. Fuck Glenn Beck.

I'll never forget Beck organizing an All Lives Matter bullshit march in Birmingham. With that being said, this recent change of heart he's had in the past few months IS encouraging. We all can have a change of heart. He has so much damage to undo though.

However, what does this mean for Tomi Lahren? She's probably heading over to Trump TV, but she weekly goes against what Beck is now [apparently] for.
