glixel: Todd Howard on Switch, seems to confirm Skyrim

I talk to people off the record (which means I'll respect that they would want to remain private) - been in the industry for a while so I know a few peeps here and there. But the general vibe ranges from cautious optimism to genuine excitement. Which is good for the industry on a whole. Switch will get more convincing third party support than Wii U. Milage may vary, and that first year will be crucial, but it won't be as bad as people fear. There's a reason Nintendo is stacking the deck with triple A ports.
I really hope you're right, I truly do.

Seems confirmed.

I think it's a slightly odd choice for a portable system, being an immersive, open world game that you want to lose yourself in for hours. Maybe that's just me being old-fashioned, though.

but those exact same reasons are why it's the absolute best choice for a portable system o.o

To be honest, Nintendo could do some neat marketing with this. Have some dude climbing a mountain, and when he reaches the peak, the familiar screech of a dragon fills the air. A shadow swoops over him, he raises the Joycons like he's dual wielding, and then shift into gameplay. Eventually pull out again to show him playing on the Switch, before saving, turning off, and heading back down. Take the adventure with you on Nintendo Switch, etc.

Still, should be interesting come January. Skyrim seems like one of the big pulls for the system, and if anything could prove the viability of third party software on the Switch, it'd be that.

I don't know why I haven't thought of this before but does anyone think this might support motion controls? Skyrim's gameplay is very well suited to a dual joycon motion control scheme, and depending on the level of work needed it might be worthwhile for them to put in full motion controls, maybe even as a stepping stone to Skyrim VR.

Also I think his quote about the Switch demo at E3 is bigger and more exciting than the reconfirmation that Skyrim is indeed coming, though I can see that this will help convince people who weren't sure about it.

It's more of an acknowledgement that Bethesda has an inept team of programmers that cannot even get a 5 year old game to run without bugs. And if they can't get it to run bug free on XO or PS4, why would you be confident of that becoming the case on the Switch, which is weaker than either of them?

The bugs in Skyrim has nothing to do with power of the device it's running on.

They came out and said it wasn't confirmed after the Switch announcement

That was right as Skyrim SE was coming out, though; they probably feared that some people wouldn't buy it for PS4/XB1 if they knew a Switch version was 100% confirmed. Gotta move that product...

There are Nintendo only gamers in 2016? What do y'all play for the other 75% of the year?

I'm not one but I can tell you this: I have more games for the 3DS alone than I will ever be able to get through.

I think everything in the commercial for switch was weird. But the legal stuff that they can't actually confirm anything until the direct is rather odd.

I'm one of those. Won't ever buy a PS4 or Xbone. Well I might get a PS4 to play FFVII Remake but sense its split into parts I might wait untill its all done. luckily I'm a patient person

I honestly don't see how people can finish a huge amount of games in a year. I just don't have that kind of time. Way too many 3DS games and the Wii U is still a decent library.

I'm officially waiting to buy & play Skyrim for Switch.

Man it would be a dream to get GTA V on Switch. It's a real shame it will probably never happen. They could use the PC build w visuals retracted a bit. Man what a bummer it won't happen.

If you would have told me as a kid, that I'd be playing stuff like Skyrim and Xenoblade Chronicles X on the go, I'd probably would have shit my pants.

To be fair, you might still shit your pants. January might be pretty intense.

Cmon Todd. Convince ZOS to squeeze ESO onto the switch while you're at it. Just allow and offline streaming dueling mode like Splatoon is.

Crosspost from Switch Thread:

Wait so they had a closed doors presentation for devs at last E3? The NDA bit screams "There's something unique about the system we don't know about yet". I wonder what it could be?

VR attachment support?

It's funny how no one leaked that Switch was shown to developers behind closed doors at E3. That's the sort of stuff that usually gets leaked by anonymous sources to gaming sites. Where was the rumour mill?

VR attachment support?

I feel like it's too soon for that from Nintendo. Switch will likely be 720p at any rate, and that alone pretty much makes it a no-go as a VR medium via an adapter.

I could see them releasing a more well-suited screen with a more robust Tegra SoC down the line to support it, though.

I think the additional wow factor will be its streaming capabilities between multiple local units combined with advanced rumble/feedback. I am imagining a very intuitive and streamlined way to form a local network (possibly including the + and - buttons) and a very Nintendo-y approach to tactile feedback.

Seems confirmed.

I assume Switch will have some sort of sleep mode. So it will actually be really convenient for games like this.

Then again, that rumored 3 hour battery life won't be convenient at all...

But you can also play it home on your 50 inch. The beauty of the Switch.

yah seems its confirmed

I havent play it myself as there's too many other games on other platforms too , so I am one of the potential audience for this.

The interesting tidbit here is that Switch was demoed behind closed doors at E3 and even the sneakiest of gaming press never even mentioned anything about it.

Seriously man, if Skyrim and Xenoblade X really come to the Switch, there are no escape from open world on the go for me especially with BotW confirmed.

I would totally be into Skyrim on Switch if I liked Skyrim more.

Dark Souls is what I'm crossing my fingers for.

Dark Souls 1 Remastered across PS4/XB1/NSW would be a huge seller I bet.
I want all three of them.

Thinking about Skyrim more, and I'd probably get it, but I sold my Wii U before Splatoon came out and plan on mostly playing that + Mario + indies.

Is the system really handheld though? That's my big concern. Knowing Nintendo it'll work like 10 metres away from the dock. It's worrying that they haven't said anything about that yet :/ :/.

At this point I'm thinking people's incredulity is less about Skyrim being actually in development and more about the game even being possible on a handheld system.

It's the only way I can make sense of this. Because there is so little sense to make of it. Like, seriously, people, of course Skyrim is on Switch. Never listen to PR. PR is PR, it's meaningless.

this is a joke right

edit: this is a joke. okay.

Woohooo! More of this!!!

Skyrim aside, this to me confirms there's still major stuff we don't know about the Switch. There must be more to the device for him to point out how good the demo of the hardware itself is.
When we saw the Switch video, we'd heard rumors about what it was for months. If people getting secret demos didn't have this advance knowledge, seeing something like Breath of the Wild undocking into portable form would probably make a big first impression.

Yep, but fact is that it's not confirmed despite being in the trailer. I guess Nintendo thinks if they confirm them all on Jan. 12 there'll be more hype. Still a strange decision imo.
At this point my guess is Nintendo doesn't want the already-shown games confirmed as a way of not pissing off the people behind all the other games we haven't seen. If Bethesda is allowed to officially acknowledge Skyrim and properly start their PR machine, those who don't want their own game to fall behind will get salty.

I remember when the list of 3rd-parties on Switch was deemed complete PR bullshit and used Bethesda's walking back of Skyrim on Switch as a justification for their thought process.

So far, we have what can only be a definite "yes" from Bethesda, Koei Tecmo and Square Enix, and a "more than likely" from Capcom. That's 3 more 3rd-party developers than anyone thought would take Nintendo seriously again, and 1 in particular that everyone was sure was NEVER going to happen.

The "3rd-parties will never come back" diatribe is getting a bit quaint in a really big hurry.

People should remember that just because a game is shown running on a console reveal doesnt necessary mean it is confirmed for that console.

Bunch of titles like Yakuza and Metal Gear Solid 4 were shown running on the Vita years back and they didnt come to fruition.

I am not saying Skyrim for Switch is not going to happen of cause.

Really don't see the point when the game is so old and available on so many other systems

skyrim SE will probably end up being one of the best selling games of the year

its old but people are still buying the fuck out of it. pretty big score for nintendo

You're saying this in a world where CoD4:Remastered exists, and people who don't give a shit about the brand-new 2016 game its attached to are STILL willing to pay essentially $80 for a nearly 10 year old game with little more than an audio and graphical facelift.

It's coming to Switch.

Nintendo fans need to buy these third party games and show support man. I'm buying Skyrim and I hope those Nintendo fans who like RPGs who've never played it will buy it.
