Very often? Have you ever checked their labs page?

The key too google's success is how they are continually pumping out new projects no one cares about, but every so often one catches on and it becomes a "full feature".
I was going to refer to your post in a very derogatory manner. Instead, I'll be a nice guy and ask if you thought about your post before you posted?

And had the blizzard not happened on the east coast there would have been a Google event at my campus tomorrow. Weird timing.

The words "social product"? "Media and status updates"?
It just screams "Web 2.0". Lots of people hate that shit.
Believe it or not, many people prefer a minimalist approach - part of what made Google's original search so successful.

None of it points to improving the interface, spam filters, searching, increasing storage space or attachment limits, etc. None of it points to improving GMail as we use it now. Is it possible Google has some awesome new thing that will revolutionize email? Sure. But even if they did many people would still prefer the current version.

It's like Nintendo announcing a new Zelda game.
People will bitch that it hasn't changed enough.
People will bitch that they changed too much.
And people, like you, will bitch at people for bitching.

Isn't part of the philosophy of Web2.0, at least design-wise, minimalism?

How often does Google make something that's not awesome? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here.

Not very often but: Wave.

Perhaps this mix some of the interesting features of Wave with Gmail?

I don't see anything new in Gmail itself, but when doing a normal Google search earlier today, I noticed a "my social circle" section at the bottom.

I assume the announcement is related to this. Seems to be a section showing results for your search query relevant to your gmail contacts.

This is what I'm talking about:

I did a search earlier and I got a different interface. Can't get it back, though. Wasn't anything special, was just most things collapsed on top via the Show Options link.

Same. I hope there's more to their update.

Existed for a few weeks now. Been in private beta for longer.

I assume its something to do with a social wave or something.

wtf is this? You see sites your gmail "contacts" see? 90% of my gmail contacts are not my fucking friends and I don't want this!

took one minute of watching that stream before meh :lol

i don't even want people i message on gmail to auto add to my 'friends'. it only shares what you 'publish' as far as i can see, but still donotwant.jpg

At least is not something that will clog the Gmail interface. It's a folder you can click into if you want.
