God of War 2018 PS5 patch incoming

With this patch I'm no longer sure what the most beautiful PS4 game was, Ghost of Tsushima or God of War. Some of the prettiest textures I've seen on console. Hard to believe it's a last gen game.

The hdr "expert" on reee said that the hdr on gow is kinda bad and that the locations change mood with hdr enabled.

He is called evil boris if i remember well, he does hdr videos on yt and the rare times i watched his videos he was right.

Never tried gow without hdr enabled but just for curiosity i'm gonna try tonight.

I know that gow is considered one of the best hdr games, i was just offering a different opinion, this is what he say:

It's a poor implementation as it doesn't have a configurable display mapper. It ends up too bright with clippped whites or too dark to the point of being hard to see.
The colours and mood of many areas are significantly different if you are in HDR
this guy knows his stuff but can be a bit narrow minded. Have played what he considers the "best" hdr games and GoW easily stands up to them outside of a few awkward instances. Just tweak your tv settings as needed, it's well worth it for the improved contrast and bright highlights. Looks unbelievable most locations though the hub area is nothing special.

Really stoked about this. Thank you SONY and SONY Santa Monica Studio. Can finally play GoW without falling asleep after 5mins. Game is incredible now, much faster response. Ever since I had a concussion it's been difficult to play certain games. :/

The HDR on GoW was impressive to me on Pro, I think that second location, Alfheim, is what looked really good in HDR. But YMMV

Nice! God of War is also one of the best games to play especially if you are someone who like actions and adventure. Been enjoying how high-quality the graphics are and there are a lot of features that makes the game more exciting. I do admit that there are some challenges that is really difficult which makes me lose my mind haha kidding aside. Are there any tips when it comes to playing God of War? You know, to just have an upperhand in the game. Hope that there are more games I can play similar to this.

I've bin playing the unpatched version for a week and this patch seems to not be quite as sharp as the unpatched version. Anyone else notice this?

It's actually the opposite, check the game spot comparison posted previously, and check that you are indeed patched.

I took these images from my Note 10+ camera off a 75" Sony 940c. I can't believe how sharp it is!

Not that impressed to be honest, first time playing and at least from the first couple of hours I'm not feeling all the buzz that I read in the reviews, there is tons of invisible walls so the game feels a lot of restrictive, the graphics although nice and at least until now RDR2 is still the best looking game I played.

This is what I like about it. Its not open world. Its a clear cut Metroidvania with an awesome combat system that gets better the more you explore and find. The main hub isn't that huge, and connected by what are essential hallways, but with lots of three ways, hidden doors, puzzles and stuff you can only open if you have the proper upgrades. There isn't a ton of side quests, but the ones in here are pretty good with some neat puzzles or challenging battles. I like it better than most games with no invisible walls. Design wise, I think its really solid and the more focused narrative than an open world game make the visual quality much more impressive. Its also a very polished game.

I hate the 2 optional realms though. In fact I dialed down the difficulty to Balanced for them. Also for the 9 optional bosses though to be fair I did beat a few of them quite easily and some of this optional content feels post-game, probably very doable at a slightly higher level on Challenge. I didn't beat the story yet, I actually want to beat the last remaining hidden boss first. And she kicks my ass.

I pretty much dropped Control again. I will probably finally come around to beat it once I'm done with GoW which is soon. Oh, and GoW looks better than that game imho.

LOL imagine complaining about invisible walls here while instant fail missions from straying beyond the developers narrow mission structure is a thing in RDR2

Play it longer, you'll be in for a surprise.

Would you judge RDR2 after the first 2 hours?

Because doing so would leave you with an inaccurate conclusion that's not representative of the game as a whole.

Are you comparing a linear game with an open world game?

Maybe, IDK, thats explain the invisible walls?

Invisible walls? What were you trying to do?

Interesting that it's still essentially a PS4 game even though it recognises the hardware. I still get the same performance playing it externally on a SSD as internally.

I wasn't that impressed gameplay wise to be honest, wasn't a bad game just didn't like the amount of cut scenes personally. the game looked amazing though

I can imagine that if they built it for the PS5 it would have even more benefits. Like faster load times and a smaller install size for example. Plus maybe some cards could get added to the game.

The PS5 in BC mode is essentially a supercharged PS4 Pro, sort of a Pro Pro, so that's why it's "easy" for games to be patched like this as they're just getting another profile for an even stronger PS4.

Whoa, PS5 is even sharper than pro? How is that so?
Either checkerboarding is improved at a lower level or, more likely, an "impression" based on nothing. Purely psychological.

Having said that, the impact of doubling the framerate cannot be overstated.

It's what the pro should of been. Having sold my pro after I played GOW in 2018 as the fan noise was rediculus I went back to my base ps4 and the difference was not that much really.

Beat God of War today. Not before I completed the optional realms (except for the tears) and maxed my Valkyrie set.

The story I did on Challenge, the optional stuff on Balanced as its tedious as is (really, some gauntlets are bullshit, and the poison realm is bullshit in general). I love the Valkyries though. The final one isn't a far cry from the better FROM bosses. Its the culmination of everything you've faced. Studied her entire move set while dying, got better each time. I beat her without resurrection, and had not even one full rage meter. The idea of having failsafes never made anyone a better player. Kudos to those who beat this on Give me GoW though.

What a fantastic journey, I returned to the party at the halfway point (right before second weapon). I loved scouting old areas with new key items and abilities and the graphics are insanely good. Gameplay too, the combat is really solid with stance changes, gear setups (I went for runic and fast cooldown).

What this game lacks, are epic boss fights. There are really just a few. The troll miniboss is being reused time and time again, with some added gimmicks. I think SSM can improve on this front. And funny that I never realized the game isn't gory at all. There is some blood, but you're always tearing monsters apart. No humans like in old GoW games, and there is nothing as graphic as Helios in 3 in here. I didn't miss it though, the combat and fatalities are visceral, rune attacks have oomph.

This is one exceptional game that probably won't age soon, its just very tight and polished. Best GoW game, with Ghost of Sparta at number 2.

I was the same way but it really starts to click a bit in, give it a bit of time and it really rewards

There seems to have been a shift. People like older games now on PS5?

Im still waiting for Deadspace to have better resolution and i will be done.

I felt the same with days gone. It was like they added new textures, even though they didnt. Its like the previous gen didnt let them shine at 1080p.

This is the first time in many years that a new PS console is backwards compatible.
Also many of the PS4 games are graphical diamonds, and paired with a patch for better performance they are not far behind actual PS5 games. The real technical marvels of this generation have yet to arrive though.

That sucks man. Hopefully the 60fps trend continues!

I felt the same. But you hit a point where it feels like it changes and becomes great. I think the intro is very long and doesnt introduce thw games systems for a long time.

The right answer. Improved a lot but the intro is indeed somewhat long and boring. 9/10 so far.
