I know some people were afraid of the X-Men drop off but I don't think that will be a problem anymore.

Bring on Godzilla 2&3! *which have been confirmed if you do not know.

It's actually dropping really hard after its ow...down 66% this weekend dom and almost 70% os. Very mixed wom but really glad it's getting a sequel. Come on destroy all monsters.

So why was Godzilla better received than Pacific Rim?

Human element as lame as it was to a lot of people was still way more relatable to the general public than an anime/inspired mecha Kaiju movie. No one I saw Pacific Rim "got it" they walked out thinking it had boring action and terrible performances.

SHIT YES!!!

I've wanted Gigan to appear but I didn't know how they could make him work, they should just do this.

I loved it. Audience of fanboys i saw it with cheered 3 times before then end. Glad it did great, but it had a drop off because it misled people's expectations with the ad campaign. They should have revealed more about the Mutos in the marketing so people weren't expecting Godzilla as much in the movie.

I hope WB can buy Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah from Toho for the sequel(s). I also think this film is going to hold up over time better than any other tent pole coming out this year besides maybe the Hobbit.

I loved that the mutas had no mention at all in the trailers.

Heck when that egg was hatching I thought it was godzilla.

Then the muta came out and I was all holy shit, we're going to get some monster on monster fights!

And we bloody well did! They were some good fights, very clear. Not just a scene with 30 changes of angle in 30 seconds.

I got so excited when godzilla spines light up. I clapped.

Man i thought this movie was a turd. All that human drama, Godzilla having a sort of connection with some random jar head, Godzilla avoiding hurting any humans even if we were shooting at him.

Man fuck this movie. Sorry I blew I Max 3D money on it. Also fuck you 2 hour run time.

What in the world are you talking about? He had no connection with anyone. He also destroys absolutely everything in his path.

Was far too long and while they teased way too many fights which would have been fun to watch, the main fights alone were worth it though, IMO. You could actually see what was going on and stuff had weight to it. The main fights made me really happy that they understood what Godzilla is all about.

Better than Pacific Rim, during which I was falling asleep due to the terrible acting and the hoorah 'merica-nonsense. The mechs were uninspired and they did little with them. The sychronized pilot stuff was contrived bullshit to wrap the plot around. Also, the trailers blew all the best parts which Godzilla saved for the actual movie.

I'm happy to see this movie do well as I love monster films. I hope the sequels are a lot better, as in, as little as possible human drama.

... Godzilla avoiding hurting any humans even if we were shooting at him. ...
Not sure if I see that. Godzilla did some serious damage to the Golden Gate bridge when the navy crews panicked and started shooting missiles at him. The tidal wave in Hawaii did some serious damage too. While it wasn't shown on screen, it is naive to think people weren't hurt or killed by Godzilla in those instances.

For the most part, Godzilla just ignored people because they were too far beneath him. I doubt he could even feel those rifle bullets in Hawaii.

I think it was a fairly interesting depiction of Godzilla that was neither a villain nor a true benevolent protector. It was a force of nature, single-minded in its pursuit of its prey, and disinterested in humanity.

The parts where Godzilla was
Knocked down and so was Brody and the wya it was edited it implied symmetry between them both

Like the parts were
the battleships and stuff were following him and when the ships were shooting at him at the bridge and all he did was shake the bridge like a drunk, Hell even the way they were saying hes the earths bouncer was dumb to me

Also the fucking wife was so annoying.

Elizabeth Olsen was awful in Godzilla.. and so was her husband, whateverhisface forgettable actor guy. Bryan Cranston stood out a little too much. Ken Watanabe staring off in bewilderment, when he already knows everything.. like wtf are you even amazed about at this point?

Ken Watanabe and the wife were trying to one up each other as the most annoying supporting character in a movie in 2014. The husband was paper thin for acting and character arcs. I liked Cranston but he should of
but instead of using him to introduce the son and family they should of used him to introduce a better written Japaneses scientist

I was so hyped to see Godzilla in theaters opening night, but my friends weren't in to it. Based on GAF's impressions (whether they're nitpicky or not) I've decided to wait for a decent bootleg or OD release. I've known how the film has played out for years based on family members in the industry, but I'd rather check the film out at home than paying $10.00.

How nice of you.

So why was Godzilla better received than Pacific Rim?
Famous lead actors. A franchise name that virtually everyone knows already. And a fabricated controversy.

And one crucial element that I personally believe is responsible for pacific rim not doing superbly well at the box office: the mistake of showing only night time fights. Del Toro, please stop all of this night time nonsense because your audience can't see what the fuck is going on during your trailers for the film.

Movie was a real mess, but the bits with Godzilla were fun. Hope the sequels drop the human drama.
I hope the franchise stays true to the old Godzilla movies like this one did rather than pulling a Star Trek and becoming a barely recognisable blockbuster. They just need more interesting humans instead of dropping the standard Hollywood plot into the movie.

I dont know how many poor people were fooled by the trailers. One of the worst movies I have ever had the misfortune of seeing in a theater.

I'm still baffled by the criticisms of this movie and then the praise for original Godzilla films when those same criticisms can be leveled at the old Godzilla movies. Some rose tinted glasses.

Bootlegs? Family in the industry? $10 movie tickets?
3/10 please try again.

So why was Godzilla better received than Pacific Rim?

Recognizable character, better marketing, and less reliance on fanboy attention.

Pacific Rim sold itself on nostalgia for big robot & monster movies, and in the process made itself look like a very generic Transformers clone - when it couldn't be anything further. Godzilla sold itself on a simple promise of spectacle, and got the general audience excited for a monster movie.

It's kind of the eighth film in the franchise and it came off from First Class hardly a fair comparison.

You're right, it's not a fair comparison.

Godzilla is the 30th movie in the franchise with 60 years of history and global iconic status. X-Men fucking bodied godzilla.

Yes, with only two of those films being in actual theatres Worldwide. It's likely will do better or at least onpar with X1 and X2's total gross.

Not bad for a film that hasn't had a movie world wide in over 16 years.

I think it's fairly obvious that Godzilla doesn't have the mass appeal that X-Men does.

It didn't have the benefit of building it's fan base up with two decades worth of movies like X-men does.

They've mostly been confined to Japan and the occasional DVD release.

This is dumb. It's not the movie of the year, but the monster sequences should be seen on a big screen, and they should be paid for. Get this "it's made enough money that I'm allowed to pirate it" crap out of here.

Hearing the ear-shattering roar is worth it alone at IMAX.

I enjoyed Godzilla much more than Pacific Rim. PR was just too cheesy for my liking, disliked everything about it, and I know they did it intentionally to try to get that 'anime' feel; everything felt cheap to me because of it and things felt less 'epic'.

Edit: Perhaps I posted in the wrong thread. ;p
