GOG | July 2014 - Classic games. Big, beautiful pixels!

Nice release! The Black Mirror is a good game and worth playing for adventure fans. There's a solid variety of puzzle types and challenge. The major drawbacks are all the backtracking (many times you see an item with a hotspot but can't yet pick it up) and voice acting of the lead character. The biggest selling point is probably the atmosphere, and while the story is interesting at times it has a fair share of clichés.

That list of bonus items is awesome, too. :)

Definitely awesome, it's a really cool adventure game, and the sequels are quite awesome as well. This is totslly worth the price. Pick it up folks!

The Black Mirror just needs like one more strong impression/quote that isn't from Berto or Kinggi (or the two just posted), to make the list, but I can't seem to come up with any more from search, maybe someone else can find a good one and pm me, or if there's someone else who wants to chime in and recommend it that works too.

I'd also supply Zarf's comments on the game, which are a bit more tepid, but do offer some interesting feedback. He's very much into the design side - he's made adventures himself - and criticises it heavily in that regard. It's from the original release, so the Starforce paragraph is of course irrelevant.

My Mum likes it. I've played a couple of chapters but sort-of lost interest; it never really made me *passionate* about it. It's the embodiment of 'okay', to me, which I guess brings me around to about the same conclusion as Zarf.

So, er, not a remotely positive impression, but more grist to the mill.

Yeah, it's got a mixed bag of impressions, but I probably can highlight that aspect too if it makes the list.

Reading your link though, clearly puts a damper on the game. A lot of the negatives may not still apply (starforce, errors in the options) and other complaints may not bother some people as much as others (typos, etc), but the part at the end of the "review" highlighting the dead-end wolf section that requires you to start over from the beginning of the entire game if you don't have properly managed saves (as you can save a state that is not winnable) is well, I guess outdated gameplay at its finest.

I can't dig it up right now but I remember they made a news or forum posting that said they had to deactivate any keys from the free offer.

If you actually bought the gift keys before they pulled them, then they should still be valid.
I got it before they got pulled.
Let's see if anyone's claimed it though, quote this post for a key to get the Fallout trilogy, code may already been used though but try your luck @_@

If Z is on here, that's awesome! Part of me hopes it shows up on Steam (since The Chaos Engine is on there too).

I also wish Zero Population Growth would get released to GOG.

This is sorta a strange request in the sense that The Chaos Engine is actually also on GOG and Z is also actually on Steam. :)

It's gonna be so fun trying to find "Z" impressions lol, damn games with under 3 characters for a name.

Search for "Z bitmap brothers"? I think the BBs were iconic enough for the time that they'd generally be mentioned in discussions of the game.

Z is really awesome. It did the area capture mechanics that Relic's modern RTS's (Dawn of War/Company of Heroes) do years before those games came out.

Topware promo could be better, especially since both Septerra Core and Enclave are going for a buck each either on Bundle Stars or Steam (Earth 2140 seems to have AI bugs, 2160 has DRM on Steam...but I'll wait for a better deal anyway).

I keep hearing that the new version of Z has some bugs and annoying changes, so I'm going to hold off for the time being.

This thread from 2011 might be your best shot; a quick Google search didn't come up with anything newer, and the older posts were mostly from people in that thread.

Fake Edit: Along with this post from Gazunta, who was championing the game in the AusGAF and iOS threads when the iOS version was announced and released.

Just three new games for the recommendations this week, and then a week off for me next week while I'm away on vacation so hopefully nothing too crazy happens with GOG!

First up is Desktop Dungeons, which upon taking a more thorough second look, I was able to find enough impressions to have it find its way to the list. Being a puzzle/roguelike it intrigued me, but it wasn't really as popular as some of the other roguelikes that have made the list. Perhaps that is due in part to the pace/style/difficulty, but the people who enjoyed it definitely all vouch for it being a good experience worth at least the price of the game on sale, if not more given the large amount of content in the game (40+ hours or so).

Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition is next, and hardly needs introducing. This is just one of those games I am catching up on from GOG's earlier releases, clearly a classic entry that practically everyone has at least heard of if not played. While impressions are generally positive, there's a little drop in level quality here and there after the initial act, but it's still a very solid 90s FPS, that has aged pretty well thanks in part to the mod community and also re-releases keeping it up to date with modern expectations as far as controls and resolution etc.

That first SpaceChem quote above, haha, I think I hit the nail on the head with that one. One of those games that is unique and incredibly deep and rewarding as you discover ways to improve your skills. A definite contender for the short-list of best puzzle game of all time, people that enjoy this game generally place it among the best games they've played. The only downside is for people who program for a living, it is said it can be too much like their day job as the levels ramp up in difficulty.

A few entries this week that didn't make the cut or needed more time:
- Duke Nukem 1 + 2 (not enough impressions)
- Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project (not enough impressions)
- The Black Mirror (not enough impressions but will keep an eye out for more down the road; even with inm8num2 & INDIGO_CYCLOPS positive impressions in this thread, I could still only find one or two other posts containing really brief impressions)
- The Guild 2 - Renaissance (seems well received by a very small number of people, best in series, etc, but still not enough impressions unfortunately)
- Z (need to revisit later to check whether this new version has any new bugs/problems like I saw mentioned and also for impressions, also thanks for the links to Z threads above)

Ah, nice. Great last few weeks.

Black Mirror is incredibly good. All fans of adventure games should pick it up. Definitely one of my genre favourites. Have actually been playing through it again the last few days. Just to confirm how good it is. I played the same developers' newer game Alter Ego very recently, and just needed to confirm how much better Black Mirror is, hehe. Although, not going to dump on Alter Ego at all, it was still pretty solid. But felt quite rushed.

Black Mirror has got some problems running, at least under win7. Maybe they've done something to the gog version? The steam version will crash randomly, it has got some damaged sound files too, or problems I can't identify with the audio. Some samples have high pitched garbage at the end. I believe there exists a version without the audio crap. Got a feeling they've got the audio sorted out version on gog. The clue to running it is to use compatibility mode set to win98. Also the 16bit colour option in the separate settings executable seem to be more stable, maybe. I haven't had any crashes after switching to win98 compatibility, but can't speak for the gog version.

Really happy to see Z appearing on the download sites too, most of the bitmap brothers games are great, but Z is an all time classic. Hopefully Steel Soldiers isn't too far behind, even if it's nowhere near as brilliant it's still worth playing, and I don't think I've got a copy of it anymore either. Still got my Z copy though! :O~ Actually, Steel Soldiers what am I writing. Gods should be next to get a small download distribution celebration/remembering. GOG really needs straight up amiga stuff already. I'm trying to forget Speedball altogether since that "HD" version was so utterly pathetic. Why would they do that to it

According to its Steam entry, Steel Soldiers is scheduled to release on July 25th, so it should appear on GOG around that time.

For Duke3d the Steam version is actually a much better idea. It's got native window/widescreen support and whatnot without the stability issues that EDuke has.

Wheeeeeeee Original Sin is finally on GOG. I should probably just go ahead and buy it now, even though I can't play it for a couple weeks (since my computer's being shipped over to my new place.) I'm sure it'll still be cool when I finally do get to play it.

Wow, I actually own everything from this sale.

Good lord all those Sword of the Stars upgrades/DLC/gold editions give me a headache. :p

Yeah, I'm not even sure how it's supposed to be installed. You have:

Original Game: Sword of the Stars: The Pit
DLC: Sword of the Stars: The Pit - Mindgames
DLC: Sword of the Stars: The Pit - Gold Edition Upgrade
DLC: Sword of the Stars: The Pit Gold Edition - The Pilgrim

All with separate downloads... Do you download and install everything in order because I thought the Gold edition included the original game + Mindgames.

I was hoping that buying the Gold edition would have been like Strike Suit Zero: The Director's cut - a separate entry from the original release of Strike Suit Zero, but including all DLC in a single file.

I ended up getting it on Steam (cause of Russians selling it for cheap and what not) and the game has been a blast so far. Sadly though, one of my friends begged for me to play Shadow of the Colossus, so I'm working on that right now, but I plan on getting back into Original Sin once I'm done with it

Updated the OP with all the releases I missed from last week (looks like Divinity made it out fairly fast, and should definitely be making the list of recommended games), and also the new release for today, Schein, a new action/puzzle/platformer with not a huge following here yet going by thread title searches.

Gray Matter (2011), Adventure, now on GOG. From the most recent OT: "Gray Matter is the fist adventure game from Jane Jensen (of Gabriel Knight fame) since Gabriel Knight 3 (1999)."

Seems pretty well received / recommended in that thread, often citing the game's excellent atmosphere and being a decent game with good puzzles (or vice-versa). Never got around to it myself, but sounds tempting.

Yup. I really liked Gray Matter, the story is pretty interesting and comes together nicely in the end, it's one of the games where you have to take a step back after you finish it to think about everything that happened for a moment and then it makes sense. I got stuck a few times, but nothing too bad. The only thing I didn't like are the controls, but I played the 360 version, I imagine the PC version is a lot better in that regard.

Definitely recommended, especially at that price.

Wasn't there supposed to be a sequel from Gray Matter? Beat it years ago and remember hearing something, not sure how well the game sold. I'll pick it up again for collection's sake.

The only thing 'wrong' with Gray Matter is the ending chapter, which completely doesn't fit the style of everything before. It really feels like something that was copy-pasted from a different game.
Other than that and main character's slow movement speed (even while running), it's an amazing pnc adventure game. Definitely on par with Sierra's finest (and made with Lucasarts game design philosophy, so no dead ends/deaths).

Yeah, Gray Matter is a great game. I'd possibly also throw a slight complaint up at the scoring system, which felt a bit shoehorned in for achievement purposes; I thought we'd moved on from the notion of the 'last lousy point' hunting, but it's back in full force. Oh, and it's occasionally guilty of that thing where an object isn't regarded as interesting until the game decides that it is.

Also, this. I'll still spoiler it for total spoilerphobes, but I'm only going to talk in vague terms about style:

The entire rest of the game is a reasonable investigative adventure with heavy ties to storyline. Most of the gameplay of the final chapter amounts to an old-style Zork-esque dungeon crawl affair, heavily divorced from the main storyline, with some pretty illogical puzzles and it heavily tests your suspension of disbelief.

It's not a particularly *bad* Zork-esque dungeon crawl, I hasten to add. It's just so wildly different from the entire rest of the game in tone and plausibility

And this is more explicitly spoilery - significantly so - but to highlight the ways that the game tests plausibility, and how it breaks down - for me - in that final chapter:
There's eerie paranormal stuff going on. I'm fine with that; it's presented well.

There's a secret society of magicians. As in sleight of hand and illusions, not 'magic'-magic. I'm okay with this.
There's a secret society of magicians who leave random puzzle boxes around to test people who want to join their society. Getting a bit more tenuous
There's a secret society of magicians who modify telephone boxes to dispense those puzzle boxes. Implausible.
There's a secret society of magicians with a final test to join the society which is a massive complicated labyrinth in the cellar with - among other things - mechanical puzzles, implied massive fatal deathtraps, and a swamp. A giant swamp, in a London cellar. Ludicrous.

I would actually be more comfortable at that point if they were actual magicians. At least that'd explain the sheer ridiculous level of technology and influence they have at their fingertips.

I do have one other criticism of Gray Matter. I live in Oxford. It's set in Oxford. The game's interpretation of Oxford geography is hilarious.

But that kvetching aside, it's really a very enjoyable adventure. Well-written, mysterious, and fun. Perhaps a little implausible, but then, what isn't?

Four more games added this week, and now we're caught back up again with all recent releases.

First is maybe one of the biggest (non-exclusive and new) releases for GOG this year, Divinity: Original Sin. I think we're going to see this one on quite a number of GOTY lists, and it's an RPG that took many by surprise. Huge, open-ended and perhaps one of the best battle systems in an RPG, you're definitely getting your money's worth and more out of this game. And if the community latches on to the extensive editor provided, that's just icing on the cake. So if you like RPGs and aren't playing this, you're doing something wrong.

Xenonauts is next, and I wasn't quite sure if I'd put this one without a warning or not, but I think it holds its own going by the impressions. Sure, it's not perfect (main complaints being the lifeless style to the game and lack of excitement the original X-COM had going for it), but it's still said to be one of the most faithful reincarnations of X-COM to date, and a very solid strategy / tactics game once you get past the shortcomings.

Z one the other hand does get a warning attached to it, partly because it's not the exact same Z you remember playing 20+ years ago (rather a port of the recent mobile recent)... the UI had some rather serious issues at launch on GOG/Steam that made controlling with a kb+m quite unfriendly, though they have been since patched to some extent. Also I saw mention the AI does not act the same way as the original did too, your units would walk all the way around an obstacle the long way instead of just destroying it with grenades when you issued a move command past it. Despite those things, Z still carries many positive impressions, and a rather brutal difficulty that will probably have you cursing at the computer.

Finally, Gray Matter joins the list, bringing Sierra fans a new Jane Jensen adventure game worth looking in to. Except for the final chapter, impressions are overall very positive, citing the game's fun puzzles and mysterious and engaging storyline. Not quite up to the level of the earlier Gabriel Knight games, but not far off either from the impressions.

As for what didn't make the cut, there's a few this week (games that just recently released get a second chance for impressions if you're wondering):
- Quest for Infamy (not enough impressions, revisit in a few weeks)
- DROD RPG: Tendry's Tale (not enough impressions)
- Schein (not enough impressions, revisit in a few weeks)
- Monster Bash (not enough impressions)
- Anomaly Defenders (not enough impressions)
- MouseCraft (not enough impressions, revisit in a few weeks)

Also, nice article at Polygon:

Nostalgia is a powerful drug: How GoG.com is growing beyond a back catalog

Guillaume Rambourg’s office in Warsaw is almost entirely empty. That’s because Rambourg hopes to be leaving soon to become GoG.com’s Vice President of North America, a title specifically created for him to fill in the soon-to-be built U.S. office in Los Angeles.

"America is the number one territory for GoG.com," he says. "We have to be closer to them, to give them faster access to news and information."

They also need to be closer to their dig sites.

"When it comes to classic games, we are still chasing a handful of publishers. Funnily enough, all of them are based in the LA area."
