GOG News and Updates 2011

esd2o.jpg

I'm so confused right now...

If they have Ultima Underworld, they have EA. Aaaargh, I can't take it anymore!

trying to square "Go to the Underworld" with LucasArts and all I'm getting is Afterlife or Tales of Monkey Island (which wouldn't really be GOG material)

Perhaps they mean Grim Fandango: Underworld = Land of the Dead?

Edit: Man, no matter how this turns out, SOMEONE is going to be disappointed.

Unless they got BOTH EA and LucasArts...

"Go to the underworld" could be a reference to The Dig, I guess. That's if we're still going on the Lucasarts path, which I'm pretty sure it will be.

Adventure/storytelling games just seem to fit GOGs philosophy more than the back catalogue of some of the other publishers that have been mentioned in this thread.

Not necessarily on this announcement, but know what I'd love to see on GOG? Ignition.
oh yeah, awesome game. hm, I wonder if that's still virgin. and what other games they could own still. they published a ton of stuff, but mostly existing properties I guess.

So, thinking back to the outlaws clue; it's "Ride with *the* outlaws", not just "Ride with outlaws". Why?

I wonder if The Outlaws is the name of a gang or team or something?

Could "underworld" in any way be a Star Wars reference?

Edit: The font on the GOG page actually looks a little ragged... so maybe it's an Indiana Jones thing?

Ugh, I'm overthinking this too much. Time for bed.

I don't know why everyone is so confused. GOG has clearly signed Lucasarts, EA and acquired the rights to Homeworld. It just makes sense!

How this thread hasn't shot up to an insane number of pages with the potential of this announcement makes me wonder.

I'm like dying over here in anticipation.

Technically its shot up ~25%+ in total # of posts!
:( it's ok, next year I'll try harder

Probably still just a little cautious too... though promoting a GOG announcement alongside The Witcher 2's conference is a great way to get some extra headlines, so hopefully it's worthy of the notice.

Ultimately, besides an admin posting "If I were you, I wouldn't miss the conference" GOG isn't playing this up as much as they easily could have in the past. I like guessing games though, so even if it's not EA + LucasArts + 3 other publishers, it's still pretty fun to put together the clues and see all the games people wish it could be.

Oh my god I hate how they tease us :(

Just release everything. Ever.

That looks like it could be a blurred cover from Ultima Underworld to me. Maybe too much blue though.

I don't think the orange blob is the right shape. The thought crossed my mind, though.

Or Glottis from Grim Fandango...

I find it hard to believe there would ever be a promo shot of Grim Fandango which excludes Manny. Glottis is great, an' all, but he's not all that *distinctive*.

The color scheme is indeed very similar. There's too much black around the orange "blot" in the center, though.

Oooh. I was thinking Underworld 1. That is better though. UW2 was the superior game.

Edit: come to think of it I don't believe you even went to the underworld in UW2. huh.

Aren't we about due a new hint? The underworld one's been up for *ages*. At least, that's how it feels.

Regarding the image: It's fun trying to spot all the things that Just Look Wrong. I bet they'd do Syndicate Plus, not just Syndicate; Toonstruck's probably a $6 title, not a $10 one...

Slight aside: Just where does the licensing lie with Blade Runner, anyway? Was it licensed from the film folk or from Dick's estate? And was the license for much other than the name?

They seem to rotate roughly every 8 hours, so another would be due in an hour or two.

Speaking of UU: having the Avatar as the main character, they should have made him more recognizable in the covers. Ok, the first one is just a FP-RPG with the Ultima label on it, but the second one follows the main story pretty well.

Yeah agreed. Lets go track down Loubet and make him pay for his mistake.

To be fair, if they've got one, they're bound to have the other.

Well, depends exactly what you regard as the underworld. You spend extensive time below LB's castle, and then... elsewhere. Including one place which is arguably 'overworld' :-)

I think the title of the Underworld games was just meant to convey "A world underground", which both definitely fit.

This is killing me. ;.; Because I want it to be LucasArts the most, I know it won't be that one. I want it too badly!

In Ultima lore the Underworld has a very definite meaning - the vast underground world underneath Britannia. They named the first one that because you spend all your time in the Underworld (at least iirc. I didn't have a powerful enough computer to run UW1 when it came out so I kind of missed out on it).
It is probably a moot point anyways. I doubt the distinction would keep GoG from using UW2's cover.

I don't think it would be Ultima Underworld as that's too blatant. I think it's the Grim Fandango theory.
That would mean Outlaws was ... Outlaws. Which is equally as blatent as Underworld.

But it is probably Lucasarts.
