GOG News and Updates 2011

I suggest 9:05: very short and easy (there are no real puzzles), but with its nice "whoa!" moment.
Violet is good too and easy for the most part.

I'd suggest that 9:05 is *not* a good choice for a new player...

...because the 'whoa' moment is somewhat predicated on the player being so used to the 'menial tasks' required in the opening section that they focus on those tasks and miss the big hints as to the real nature of what's going on, whereas a player who's just starting out and exploring naturally may well stumble on a giveaway.

> EXAMINE BED in the first scene, if I remember rightly, gives either a massive clue or a giveaway, I forget which. Someone bogged down in the menial goals may miss that.

edit:
LOOK UNDER BED. So maybe it's obscure enough after all, I just generally drop broad hints about searching relative to scenery whenever introducing anyone to IF, which may be why I assume new people will have the same guidance.

I only learned of them when they pulled that stunt a few months back. If they're dedicated to older games, how come they have pre-orders available for new ones?
GOG and The Witcher are from the same company.

Pros
-more profit per copy sold via GOG
-push no DRM in major releases agenda
-may get Witcher fans to check out GOG.com and vice versa.

It's going to vary by game. A lot of GOG stuff goes through DOSBox, so you're basically at the mercy of DOSBox's support. DOSBox I think supports DirectInput controllers. Not sure about other types.
DirectInput should cover most modern stuff? None of my older peripherals would plug into a modern PC anyways.

Good news for anyone that bought Moto Racer 2, from the GOG forum:

Despite GOG’s prerelease testing process, it’s apparent that MotoRacer 2 has some serious gameplay issues due to the remains of copy protection left over from back in the day. This specific issue is caused by copy protection remaining in the game we've distributed; it's not caused by conflicts with specific hardware or software setups. This affects everyone's game, and that's a problem. This problem is present in the masters of the game from the publisher, and is present in all downloadable retail versions of the game. The problem is simple: in motocross races, players can’t shift into a gear that’s higher than 3rd gear, and in Superbike mode they can’t shift above 4th. This makes many tracks extraordinarily difficult to win.

Some retailers might be happy with saying, “Well, we’ll work on this and when it’s fixed we’ll give you a new download.” Then, after a month, six months, a year (or longer?) players would probably get an executable that functions correctly and the retailer would be happy with having done its job.

GOG is not just “some retailer”.

Yes, we’re working on fixing MotoRacer 2 at this very moment, but we can’t tell you for sure that we’re going to have this fixed in a week, two weeks, or even a month, and telling you to wait for that long isn’t fair.

So here’s what we’re going to do: if you’re unhappy with your copy of MotoRacer 2, we’ll give you a $5.99 game code. Just log in and go to our support form, select MotoRacer 2 from the dropdown of games you have downloaded, and fill out the subject line with something like, “I’d like a credit for my copy of MotoRacer 2”. Our handy-dandy support team will get cracking on it and will send a code to you as soon a we can.

Since we’re not happy with the quality of the title, we’re have taken it off the list of active sales for now while we work on it. If you ask for a credit for your copy of the game, you’ll notice that we don’t take it off your shelf, though, and if you have already purchased it and want to download it, you’ll still be able to. Once we get the game working--whenever that is--we’ll put the game up for active sale again and post an announcement in this forum so that you guys know to redownload the game.

In the meantime, you’ll be able to enjoy a complimentary game on us as an apology.

GOG will never knowingly disappoint you, and we hope that this makes it right for you guys. We wouldn’t be where we are without our dedicated community of gamers, and we hope you’ll hang around for a long time to come.

[[Edited for clarity over which versions of this game have this particular problem with copy protection]]

Aaaargh! I prick my ears every time I see the word "Quest" in this thread. I wish GOG could bring us some Quest for Glory action - at least III and IV.

Gotta have them all! Besides QfG1 just owns. The ability to import your characters is awesome too, and you can become a Paladin at the end of QfG2 (which was faithfully remade by AGDI and released for free) and that is the only way to start QfG3 as a Paladin, so I wouldn't want to see any of them skipped, though I'd probably never play the original QfG2 again, and always use the point+click mouse driven remake if I revisit it.

Great series, great artwork, characters, music and even the VA was pretty decent in the 4th. They hold up better imo because there aren't as many ways to die, since it's got some RPG elements to it.

That's great!
Actually lost quite a few hours trying to fix it, think I deserve some kind of compensation for buying a faulty product.

Back to buying more GOG games then!

Yeah QfG 1-5 or bust. Speaking of which, how is that remake of QfG2 anyway? I remember checking it out for a couple minutes but never really put any time into it. I loved the original version of QfG2, probably my favorite next to 4.

Considering they got the Coles to give them the character import code, I have to imagine it's at least faithful.

I heard nothing but incredible things about it, at somepoint after the initial release they patched most of the issues, maybe there's a few small things, but from what little I played I thought it was an incredible effort.

Just the fact that they fixed that awful maze-like section of the city is worth using it for alone. :)

I forgot about QfG5 completely, even though I bought it and got it working under Windows 7. I tried to re-visit QfG1 a while ago, and started to get hooked again, but DA:O or something else came out and I forgot about it. Great series, and something I'll definitely enjoy playing through again at some point. I think most of them can be beaten in under 10-20 hours too, so the whole series shouldn't take very long at all, especially if you remember what to do / use a faq, then they're probably like 5-10 hour games.

Awesome move, but GoG should skip that part where they're basically saying that they're better than competition in handling situations like that. Yeah, it's probably true, but they're a little too full of themselves. Leave praising to the gamers and just do a good job.

Yeah I played them a ton as a kid so I pretty much have everything down from memory, except the layout of the QfG2 city, beginning of the game is rough until you can buy a map.

I still remember co-op in QfG5. It's too bad that got cut.

When you've done as much right as they have, you're entitled to blow your own horn from time to time.

How about not closing your site randomly in some kind of shitty PR stunt and making people worry about what will happen to all of their games? :p

They've apologized countless times and gave you a free game for that stupid stunt. What more do you want?

Nothing, really, given that I went back and ended up buying all the D&D games like a sucker. I'm just saying they could probably cool it with the "we're awesome" talk for a while because that shit still stings.

Dark Reign is fantastic and was tragically overlooked by most folks for the more mainstream stuff like C&C and Starcraft.

Definitely worth a look for any traditional RTS fan.

The AI in Dark Reign was phenomenal (at least the 'search and destroy' option). I always dug the intro very much and the gameplay was very good, but Total Annihilation was a better game at that time.

Nice, I've heard of it, but never played it. I'm thinking it may even be good enough to bold, how's it rank in the world of adventure games? A true classic, or just a nice game worth playing with some flaws.

The description makes it sound pretty unique, mentions AI for all the characters that carry out their own agendas, and the events go on in real time, so it's possible to miss stuff I suppose, opposed to Lucas Arts triggered events to move on. Wonder if it holds up a little poorer because of it.

They say more extras are coming soon for the game as well, probably soundtrack I'd guess.

Bold for sure. Even so, The Last Express is a strange one. It's one of the most ambitious games I've ever seen and it doesn't really play like anything else.

The big thing is that it's almost entirely played in realtime. It's very possible to miss important conversations. In fact, it's mostly expected.

I'm honestly not sure if the game is a true classic since I never got beyond the first few hours (since it was so annoying to get running on my computer). But god almighty I love the voice acting. Most is English but it's so refreshing how you actually hear foreign languages instead of some shitty Russian/French accent.

Awesome. I was waiting for the Last Express to appear on GOG and they're even undercutting DotEmu's price of $9.99. Will buy with great force.

I always forget about DotEmu having some older games too, looks like this is not a GOG exclusive game then (I tend to just check against Steam, D2D, Impulse and Gamersgate). I've traded the italicizing for bolding in the OP, also updated with a link to the recent thread from Visualante in case anyone pursues a play through.

It goes way beyond that, if the descriptions I've heard are true. Basically you're on a train, and the WHOLE TRAIN and all the people in it are doing stuff in real-time from the beginning of the game right up until the end (it has a time limit). You could literally sit next to some guys and listen to them having a conversation until the time runs out, missing the whole story. No matter what you're doing, you're missing everything else that's going on in the world (the train).

a) I've never even heard of DotEmu before now. I can't believe there are competing European retro PC game websites.
b) They dropped their price to 5.99! - http://www.dotemu.com/en/the-last-express
Fun times.

Also, since apparently bitching works, someone please rescue the Westwood Blade Runner game!
