GOG News and Updates 2011

I would suggest against the the SWAT games unless you're trying to have all the PQ games (since SWAT is essentially PQ5). The first one is a FMV-heavy adventure game from when Sierra was doing its best to kill off adventure games. As memory serves the game consists of three scenarios plus training. Training, particularly sniper training, was very difficult (and boring), and required (I think) to continue to a later mission. The game was only really notable for being the start of the SWAT "tradition" of having random elements in missions, thereby making each mission different upon replay. While this works fine in later games like SWAT 3/4 (since it's all 3D models so repositioning/rearranging things isn't an issue), it causes a big problem when everything is FMV video and you only have so much.

SWAT 2 is like Syndicate if you stripped out the fun. It had some interesting elements and strategy if you really dug into the system but it was pretty glitchy and the random elements create situations where you either can't win or the game prevents you from doing something that you think you should be able to do (much like an adventure game but without the specific benefits of that style of game). You can also play as a terrorist cell which kinda highlights the problem with the game: structuring a game where one path has strict rules for success falls apart when the same game has to support a free-for-all structure.

New release: Dark Reign 2 - $5.99, which is strangely cheaper than the first Dark Reign.

The good news is they announced it by acknowledging Activision's back catalog is immense (which means they haven't forgotten about it), the bad news (for me) is they picked Dark Reign 2 from the immense back catalog.

Well, at least it's another title that was previously unavailable anywhere digitally if nothing else.

Now we just need the Mechwarrior 2 trilogy and Battlezone to complete Activision's classic old games.

I wonder if they'll do the THPS series. They're probably arguably within GoG's remit, although it feels *wrong* to include them!

This thread seems pretty slow-moving, but I didn't want to start a new one for this so hopefully someone reads this:

I just bought Tropico Reloaded on GOG. The file downloaded properly, but now when I click on the "setup_tropico_reloaded" file, a bar comes up that says "checking file integrity," and when it fills nothing happens.

I've done this a few times now, after the files are checked, the setup doesn't start. If I run run as administrator, the folder stop responding.

I haven't had any luck finding what's up online, all of the help I can find has to do with problems installing a game, but I can't even get the setup to start.

licensed music says no, they won't do THPS.

Delete and download it again?

I tried to do that just now, but it won't even let me do that, it brings up a window that says "You are unable to do this" or something like that. I downloaded three games at once and their setup things are all in one folder, I made separate folders for all three of them on the off-chance that that makes a difference before I mess around with my administrator settings or whatever to get them deleted.

Fucking hate Windows sometimes.

Wait, Windows wont let you delete it, or GoG wont let you download it again?

Weird, no problems with GOG's Tropico Reloaded here. There's no limit on downloading from them either, I've had 5 things at once going, and there's no limit on re-downloading either.

Try another computer? I almost never let the integrity check complete, usually cancel it in the first second, I'm guessing you already tried that?

Kinda feeling some King's Quest nostalgia after the news of the a new one. Tempted.

I, II, and III are all remade/redistributed online for free. I and II you can grab from AGDI, they've even been reworked (optionally) so you can't lose, like a Lucas Arts game, and if you wait long enough, it looks like they're doing III as well, but someone else did it also, forget who.

I only have the one computer, my laptop. Yeah, I tried skipping the integrity check, same thing happens, the setup thing just closes. Hopefully something did go wrong with the download, I'm downloading it again now.

Instro, I mean that Windows won't let me delete it, when I try a window pops up that says "You need permission to perform this action" with "Try again" and "Cancel" options at the bottom. I'm admin on my computer, so that's not the problem.

I've had a file that I've been unable to delete for the same "reason" since I upgraded from Vista to Win7 the first day I could buy it at my university. It's a leftover Flash file.

Good luck.

The only thing I haven't tried is a Linux live CD. ):

Try temporarily disabling your AV too (if you have one), it may be trying to scan the file or something, I've seen stuff like that happen to me in the past.

Well, downloaded it again and I'm getting the same thing, click on the file, starts the integrity check, click skip, setup stays open for a fraction of a second before closing, nothing happens.

I'll try turning MSE off I guess, that would be nice if that's what the problem was. Seems like the file just isn't executing for some reason.

Thats pretty weird man, is Tropico the only GoG game thats not working for you?

Btw, you might not be able to delete the file if the setup program is still running in the background even though its not working, you might need to end the process in the task manager or restart your computer.

Fallout is doing the exact same thing, I purchased it on my desktop back home and it worked fine, this is the first time I've tried to use GOG on my laptop. Those are the only two games I own.

I just checked and I did indeed have like ten tropico_setup.exe's running, so I guess it is working on some level, but it only stays on the task bar for an instant before disappearing.

Sorry to post twice in a row, but I wanted to update that now, hours after trying run the tropico_setup.exe file, I'm suddenly getting a flurry of those "Will you allow this program to run" message from windows. I'm clicked "yes" for all of them, but again, the setup didn't actually start.

Very strange.

Try running them as admin or disabling UAC.

In my experience the problem is MSE. STALKER Complete 2009 caused my system to shit itself if I even looked at the file because MSE wanted to scan every single element inside that file or something. After making an exception in MSE to the download folder I stopped having problems.

I actually already fixed it, UAC was the problem. Was going to update the thread but didn't want to keep being a nuisance.

Glad I got it sorted out. Windows can be so annoying at times...

Thanks to everyone who offered advice!

Whoops, I was assuming you already disabled UAC, would have mentioned it hours ago. Oh well, at least you figured it out.

Pinball Gold Pack released today, containing some potential classics:

Pinball Dreams 1 (ToP 3/5) and Pinball Dreams 2 (ToP 3/5), Pinball Illusions (ToP 4/5), Pinball Fantasies (ToP 5/5) and Pinball Mania (ToP 2/5).

Seems the real gem here is Pinball Fantasies. I'll definitely have to check it out, and a ToP 5/5 is good enough for me to bold this release, they're one of the best pinball review sites I've found.

Might as well give a call out to Pro Pinball: Timeshock! (also on GOG), another of the rare ToP 5/5 games.

You're not on Verizon are you? I've had this problem, and apparently it's been an issue lately. Verizon IP ranges are being flagged for some reason. Either try skipping the integrity check or use a proxy to redownload.

EDIT: Doh, finishing reading before replying. Stupid is as stupid does.

Pinball Fantasies was, for the time, phenomenal. I'll be picking this up for that alone. Not to diminish the other games, since Dreams is a classic in its own right.

I recall a covermount demo of Pinball Fantasies (Partyland table) which was infinite balls for five minutes. However, it was possible to then get it to let you play out that last ball. I recall holding onto that ball for so very, very long!

I purchased Psychonauts on Steam for about the same price a while ago, but have yet to play it for more than a couple hours because I can't get my damn 360 controller to work with the game. I don't mind the keyboard/mouse controls, but I would much rather play a platformer with a controller.

Does anyone know any workarounds?

Pinnacle Game Profiler has profiles which can be found for pretty much everything. If you love gaming on a pad, it's a must-have.

Edit: Nevermind, I don't think you can remap keyboard/mice keys as well, misread some of the newer features.

I know Psychonauts has gamepad support, so it's strange how completely unintuitive it is trying to play with a controller.

I'm pretty sure I just used xpadder and manually mapped all of the buttons for the gampad settings.

Is it a wireless controller? Try emulating the input with Xpadder or something. Don't know what else to suggest, Psychonauts works fine with my (wired) controller, I just had to remap some of the buttons because it's a DirectInput game.

Well, to be completely honest, I use MotioninJoy to recognize my DS3 as a 360 pad, so that's what I'm working with. I don't know if Xpadder will work for me.

Just emulate "left-shift" with the L Trigger and "E" with R Trigger using Xpadder or Joy2Key.

And then copy this into the "Profile 1 - Raz.ini" located in \Psychonauts\Profiles\Profile 1

It's ok. I really wanted to like it when it came out but just couldn't get into it, I want to say because of the melee focus which the TA style doesn't do right. I also think it had a big memory leak or some other problem because until the expansion came out the later levels would run really poorly.

I'm passing, and I feel that the RTS genre is one that GoG should probably avoid; the genre has evolved significantly enough that a lot of older RTS games bring practically nothing to the table that isn't being done better currently.

I agree to somewhat (same is true I feel for sports games and racing games), but there's a good number of standout RTS games, C&C will always be fun, old or not, how can you not love stuff like Yuri's Revenge? And Age of Empires 1 & 2 are classics, still fun today I'd bet, with the slower pace, farming and hunting and semi-history lessons between levels. I'd love to see them release Z, just because I'm curious about it, and can't remember it too well, that one may not hold up as well, but nostalgia would win me over with it. There's Dune 2000 as well, might be in the same category as Z.

Homeworld 1 & 2 would be amazing of course.

Warcraft 2 & 3 are still very serviceable, even the first is ok. Rise of Nations is another that probably holds up pretty well too.

I think if there's a cheesy enough single player component, I'm game for it. LotR:BfME fit this category, as would the rest of the C&Cs and the Star Wars: Empire at War.

So there's definitely a good dozen or more RTS games I'd probably enjoy seeing make their way to GOG.

Not really, i still have a lot of fun with C&C Red Alert, The Settlers II, Transport Tycoon, Total Annihilation, Dungeon Keeper....

You should be alright. Just go through the options and set your buttons manually if nothing else, and make sure your camera is on the x and y rotation axis, not z-axis.

Will do. And when you say Options, you mean the in-game options or MotioninJoy options?

And the thing about the camera, I noticed immediately. Turning the right stick did nothing but zoom in and out. You're telling me I can fix this? Where exactly?

Since you're using a PS3 controller I don't know if it'll be the same, but on a 360 controller all I did was go to the bottom of the controller options and, I think, the last four options controlled the camera moving around. The top two were for left and right and the bottom two were up and down.
