GOG News and Updates 2011

Will do. And when you say Options, you mean the in-game options or MotioninJoy options?

And the thing about the camera, I noticed immediately. Turning the right stick did nothing but zoom in and out. You're telling me I can fix this? Where exactly?

Yeah it's in the in-game options/controls.

The movement is automatically put on the left stick, so you don't have to worry about that.

In the bindings menu, if you scroll all the way down you will get to the look up, down, left and right options. Just click on it with your mouse and then up on your right stick and so on and so forth.

I agree to somewhat (same is true I feel for sports games and racing games), but there's a good number of standout RTS games, C&C will always be fun, old or not, how can you not love stuff like Yuri's Revenge? And Age of Empires 1 & 2 are classics, still fun today I'd bet, with the slower pace, farming and hunting and semi-history lessons between levels.
AoE1 is pretty rough. Early C&C is pretty rough although the cutscenes and legacy give it a bit of extra push. I consider Warcraft 1 to border on unplayable due to early interfaces, much like Dune 2.

Homeworld 1 & 2 would be amazing of course.

Warcraft 2 & 3 are still very serviceable, even the first is ok. Rise of Nations is another that probably holds up pretty well too.
Homeworld and Z haven't really been done since (afaik although I know there are things somewhat similar to Homeworld), so those haven't been supplanted by newer versions. Close Combat would probably fall in this category. Rise of Nations I guess I consider new enough although it's 7 years old at this point.

Dune 2k, though, didn't even hold up well when it was released.

I think if there's a cheesy enough single player component, I'm game for it. LotR:BfME fit this category, as would the rest of the C&Cs and the Star Wars: Empire at War.
These are new enough that I'd consider them outside of GoG's purview (although Driver indicates that there's a very thin limit).
Not really, i still have a lot of fun with C&C Red Alert, The Settlers II, Transport Tycoon, Total Annihilation, Dungeon Keeper....
I don't know if I'd consider TT or DK to be RTSs, and I'd almost toss Settlers 2 into that mix (although I really struggle with the old interface). Also, I said lots, not all. There are a decent handful of RTS games that still bring something interesting, but a lot of those are locked up with EA and MS.

Just emulate "left-shift" with the L Trigger and "E" with R Trigger using Xpadder or Joy2Key.

And then copy this into the "Profile 1 - Raz.ini" located in \Psychonauts\Profiles\Profile 1

That's the Standard OG Xbox config.

Edit: Should work with a DS3 as well. I think the button layouts are the same.

This worked perfectly, thanks. I still haven't finished this game, I got stuck on that spanish painting world or whatever it was called.

Awesome. Thanks, guys. Will try your solutions later tonight and report back.

What I have played of the game is fantastic, however. Absolutely love the humor/characters/writing/setting. Can't wait to delve further into it.

Okay, I did what you said, but it still isn't working. Clicking any button on my controller isn't recognized within the game options at all. That's what's throwing me off.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I'll give it a miss. ANd yeah while there are plenty of RTSs that I don't think I could go back to, there are enough that I would love to go back to that I would not want GOG to abandon the genre.

That's weird. Are you trying on the right hand side column?

Other than that it might just be the type of emulation that Motionjoy is using. Stupid sony should just release the damn drivers for the DS3.

I bought the Incredible Machine pack 'cause I didn't realize it came with almost every game in the series before. Bonus: it was on sale!

(Where is The Incredible Toon Machine?!)

Just downloaded Zork Nemesis and I'm installing it now. I haven't played this in years, but it's in my memory as one of my favorites. Fixing to find out if it's all nostalgia goggles or if it really is as good as I remember.

Zork Nemesis?! I'm all over that, man I've so many fond memories of playing it back in the day. Never did complete it. The asylum level scared the bejesus out of me...

Shadowgrounds out today, doesn't seem like a terribly exciting release. It has been on Steam for a while, and I never heard of it, but comments seem to be it's not anything too special.

A staff member posted on the forums that the 24-hour promos were a test run made during february so we might not get more deals like that, it all depends how successful the promos were. Hopefully they turned out well because i think they were pretty awesome.

GoG have dropped the UK price of The Witcher 2 to keep it comparable to the European and US one.

I have to say, while I don't have much desire for the game (I probably *should*, but I still haven't got around to playing the first, so it's not going to be on my radar for some time yet), I'm tempted to buy it just because GoG are being so awesome about everything.

Sigh, RIP New World Computing. I have so many memories of their games (like most people here seem to feel about Final Fantasy)

Considering the success of WRPGs of late, I'm surprised they haven't dusted of the M&M IP (as a RPG) (I guess Ubisoft owns it?)

I think the early transition period to 3D (especially 3d cards on PCs which were odd back then) hurt the genre.

I have both of those on cd, but I don't have the Homm 4 Expansions, so I will get that...

M&M7 and HoMM IV, two average-good games, probably enjoyable, but not really great. Still, I'll take them! :)

Hopefully they have some big releases coming at some point in the first half of the year. The first three months have been a bit low-key compared to the 2nd half of 2010.

So is Might and Magic 7 a step up or a step down from 6? In what ways?
Might and Magic 7: For Blood and Honor

What's cool about it:
* Arguably the best installment of the Might and Magic series.
* Over a hundred hours of great adventure in the Might and Magic universe.
* A great soundtrack, an epic story, memorable locations and an addictive card game: Arcomage!
I was pretty surprised to read this. I have to admit I haven't played 7 tho.

I haven't played it either, but I was always under the impression World of Xeen was the best entry in the series.

I've played all of the M&M games except for IX and I would say VII is the best of the 3D engine games (VI - IX). It's got a great character creation system and as the game progesses you can promote those characters to a choice of different elite classes. There is also a dark and a light path to play through the game so it's got quite a bit of replayability.

Personally my favorite is M&M III followed by the Xeen games, but I prefer old school 2D rpgs.

It's very very similar but makes a few changes to kind of smooth the experience out. Better quest journals and whatnot. It's a good game, not as good as World of Xeen but better then 6.

Neat! I kind of enjoy 6 but it never really clicked with me, I guess I'll give this one a go then.

Anyone who liked Might and Magic VI will definitely like VII. The two games play (and look) very similar, but M&M7 has a branching story, more class and race options, better character sprites, an expanded magic system, and (IMO) better quests. I would have rather had a Might & Magic VII-IX collection for $9.99 ($5 each for VII and VIII with IX thrown in free), but for $6 you are still getting a lot of gameplay.

Xeen is the best one if you can tolerate the interface and don't mind grid navigation. Some can, some can't. Playing with the mouse is far less fun than it used to be when I was a teen because of the excessive clicking, and the keyboard interface for the inventory is terrible (the whole inventory/stat experience is bad by modern standards) so jumping back to the mouse is still required for certain tasks.

If either of those aspects make a game unpleasant for someone then VII is the best M&M game. It certainly isn't "average-good".

How playable is the Might and Magic 6 pack these days? I really never played older WRPGS, and I know Ultima was kind of the king shit pre D&D era games. However, they aged pretty badly. Any advice would be awesome. Because outside of D&D, and Fallout 1 and 2, I really haven't touched older games.

Thanks, you're endorsing pretty convincingly. I don't mind the old interfaces, but I've always preferred Eye of the Beholder / Lands of Lore to the M&M series.

If M&MVII is the best game in the series for people who can't play the older interfaces I'll have to bold it! It does seem to be getting a bunch of good comments here. The average-good comment might be true if you're comparing it to BG2/IWD/PST/W8! But maybe that's settig the bar a little too high :) It sounds like it's on level with the rest of the classic RPGs from the 90s, like Lands of Lore, Eye of the Beholder, Betrayal at Krondor, Dark Sun, and so on.

Never heard of these, but it seems they're very popular in the comments on the release. One person said:

Battle Isle 1 - 3 + History Line are very good tactial war games.

Incubation is a sqaud based tactical game, which is among the ranks of X-Com and JA2

So it's 5 games + 4 Add-Ons (some of which are very big)

Sounds pretty nice! Anything among the ranks of XCOM/JA2 is worth checking out for me.

Incubation? Damn, talk about a blast from the past! That game used to amaze me visually. I'll have to check it out again soon :_D

What I played of Battle Isle - I only ever touched a demo of Battle Isle 2 - I really liked. I think I'm game to give this a go.

I wonder if it's possible to make the multi-mouse split-screen mode work on modern systems.

I had great fun with Incubation back in the day. I still have the CD lying around here somewhere. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in a decent if not good SRPG.

Has anyone gotten Freespace 2/Open to work with the 360 pad? The right stick never gets recognised properly for me and I kinda really need it for controls that are comfortable to me in such games (left stick I set to pitch and roll and right stick horizontal to yaw, then other stuff depending on the game). I've looked around but never got a solution outside making the stick recognised as digital buttons which is hardly ideal...

Incubation isn't really like JA2/X-Com in that there's no base building and the missions are fairly linear (sometimes actually being linear, resulting in a more puzzle-like challenge).

Fun, though.

Maybe this will help? PGP profile that uses shift-states and double commands to map all the actions to buttons/sticks. It takes a little extra tweaking to get running 100% so it says, but the maker says the profile works flawlessly - despite being one of the hardest ones they made.

Anyone heard anything about the Pool of Radiance games coming? My friend said that he read it somewhere, but now can't find the source.

First I've heard of it. It'd be pretty awesome if they got the Gold Box games though.

Might and Magic 6 and 7 were contemporary with the Infinity Engine D&D games, and with Fallout 1+2. If you don't have problems playing games from that era, you shouldn't have too much of a problem playing them. They are much less story-centric, and much more tongue and cheek than the Baldur's Gate games though. If you like open concept rpgs that are exploration heavy, you will probably like the Might and Magic series. Combat is simple but fun, the dungeons are varied with puzzles and hidden passages, and there are a ton of easter eggs and hidden treasures to discover in the game world.

Might and Magic 3-5 have the same stuff that later games have, but are much more dated.

Here is a gameplay video to give you an idea of how dated those games are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rva0hLL5vL0

For some people, it will just be a matter of adjusting, and after 30 mins or so you will be enjoying yourself just like you would if you picked up an NES game for the first time. Some other people may find it impossible to get into.

Might and Magic 1 and 2 are REAAALLLY dated. Mid-late 80s Commodore 64/Apple II dated.

So twice a year I'll try to run through and update the list of games which are exclusive to GOG's store. If nothing else, for my own interest. Here's what used to be exclusive to GOG at the time of release, and has appeared elsewhere (bolded titles are just ones that have been recommended, like always):

HoMMIV becomes a much better game with equilibrius mod.

Thanks for the suggestion, it's always nice to get pointers for the mods, when I update the mod section again (hopefully I can do it twice a year as well), I'll be sure to include it.

After playing through them, a few of those Tex Murphy games should probably be bolded. Under a Killing Moon and Pandora Directive are both first-rate adventure games, in spite of the FMV focus.
