GOG News and Updates 2011

Man it's so refreshing to find a real awesome classic game that you haven't played before. Realms of the Haunting is incredible so far, such a breath of fresh air from these stagnant corridor crawls that games have become. It's nice to just dive in and explore this crazy place, digging for clues, solving puzzles, all without some half-wit in my ear explaining every thing I need to do step by step or giant glowing arrows pointing the way as if to say "Hey fuckstick, you are too dumb to play our completely linear shit game, so in case you can't figure out which direction is forward I will point to it for you. Dumbshit."

Thank you GOG. You are kings among men.

EDIT: Oh and a quick FYI I was having some performance issues with GOG's default settings so I went into the conf file and changed the renderer to OpenGL and upped the CPU cycles to 200,000. Now it runs smooth as buttah.

You're gonna get another pleasant surprise when you find out how HUGE and LONG this game is. All without recycling the same areas over and over again (
Well, okay you revisit the house all the time, but that's because it is more like a hub for your travels
).

I remember when I finished my exploration of the first dungeon, only to return to the library and be greeted with "Chapter 3". Wait, all that craziness I experienced down there was just the second chapter!? And there are
20
chapters in this game, not all as long as that one (the first one is pretty short for example), but this game simply has an epic length!

(About DOSBox Cycles: This depends heavily on your CPU. 200'000 might be fine for you but may not be good for everyone. Setting them too high will take away CPU time for processing the sound. Most of the time the triple auto settings should work fine, so I don't recommend changing them without need.)

Painkiller's on sale! Pick this up if you just want gameplay without scripted set pieces and cutscenes every five minutes. It's really fun.

Will GGX2 have online play? See no mention of it on the product page.

Going to have to wait till it's released and the forums open, I'm sure the answer will be there. I imagine if the retail version had online play, this would be identical though, if anyone is familiar with it. And there's always the chance there's some mod to patch it in, but it's all just guesses 'til it comes out and you can check in the forum.

Really intrigued by all the positive Realms of the Haunting impressions, looks like it may be a lot of fun.

Hit Chapter V of Realms of the Haunting and still completely in love. $6 for what is shaping up to be the best game I've played this year almost feels criminal.

That was quick, nice seeing two good, exclusive titles in a single week. Sounding like there may be a netpatch for it too, no forums up yet though.

And with that (and the other 3 or 4 people's high praises), I'll go ahead and add it to the bolded list.

OK OK YOU GUYS WIN I BOUGHT IT

BTW, is there any way to add mouselook? Or at least to change the keybinds? Strafe?

I haven't read the manual yet and I won't be able to play around with it until after work.

Dungeon Keeper? Crusader? Wing Commander? System Shock? Thief? Lucas Arts Star War & Adventure games? Blizzard titles? Hype!

Even more so for all The Witcher footage and info though. April 14th is now something to look forward too!

Get Psyched!

I'm glad people are enjoying this game. I LOVED it back when it came out. Even now it's still one of the best horror games I've ever played. Besides Gabriel Knight 2: Sins of the Fathers, it's one of the only decent uses of FMV, and one of the few horror games that aren't just a blood-soaked zombiefest. It was more like Poe or Lovecraft than Romero. Nostalgia may be making it seem better than it was, but I can't wait to replay it again. My friend made off with my copy years ago, and I'm about to d/l it and play it again for the first time in over a decade.

You need to keep both mousebuttons pressed for mouselook, not very comfortable. There is strafing, but you will want to rebind the keys. Here's how to remap the keys with DOSBox:

I played like that through the whole game just now and it works perfectly fine. The combat is pretty slow-paced and the enemy AI pretty stupid (don't go expecting a second Blood or something), FPS is only part of the game, the true strength of ROTH is atmosphere and story.

I was thinking about picking up a class first-person shooter from GOG. Right now I'm looking at Blood and Realms of the Haunting. If I'm a huge fan of the original System Shock, which one of these two games would I enjoy more?

I'm also considering realMyst because it reminds me of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which I'm currently playing through and loving.

What say you all?

All 3 come out to less than $20. Buy them all.
I've never played Realms of the Haunting, though.

If you liked System Shock, get Realms of the Haunting.

Hell, get Realms of the Haunting even if you didn't. It's an amazing game that too few people have actually played.

Yeah, it looks and sounds really awesome. I'm a sucker for atmosphere, and Realms of the Haunting seems to have it in spades.

Realms of the Haunting is much closer to system shock due to its exhaustive inventory system and creepy atmosphere. There are no audio logs, but lots of well-written (and voiced) conversations with your companion instead that really flesh out the world and story.

Blood is a much more fast-paced shooter (and with tighter controls), also rich with atmosphere but very low on story.

Real-Myst could be compared to Amnesia in gameplay, but there are no horror elements to speak of, it's a pure adventure, but a very good one, very original story as well.

Which of the three UFO games on sale are worth getting?

Pretty much none of them. They're all flawed attempts to re-do Xcom. You'd be better off just playing through XCom 1 again.

Aww, really? I was hoping they'd be all updated and all that.

Up to Chapter 9 in RotH. I always had a picture in my head of the game and always figured it took place entirely in a creepy mansion RE style, so imagine my surprise at the breadth of cool locations it takes you.

Another thing I've noticed is how heavily Clive Barker's Undying was influenced by this game, though it definitely isn't as good as RotH.

Just finished RotH. Outside of the stupid maze with the brain machine, that was one hell of a game. Highly recommended.

I hope Normality gets put on GoG soon. It was an PNC adventure game by Gremlin that used the same engine as RotH.
yeah, hope so. funbox media definitely own that game as well. it, slipstream 5000 and a bunch of actua sports games are already on gamersgate (and have been for a long time, since zoo digital was still around), but these games have horrible wrapper/installer things the morons at zoo made and are close to impossible to get installed right.

RotH is better but that's largely more a failing of Undying, as I felt the first... half or so of Undying was incredible. The initial exploration of the mansion, the catacombs (or whatever they were), and the initial forays out to the area around the mansion showed a serious focus of immersive storytelling, particularly the sound engineering.

Then it devolves into more or less a rote shooter.

Teasers/clues for GOG's announcement on Thursday during the CDP presentation will be cycled over the next day or two.

First up:

"what game made you dream of the stars"

Seems like a generous clue, but nothing is jumping out at me.

OMG LUCASARTS X-WING TIE FIGHTER

There's dozens of things which could fit the clue, of course, that's just the first one that sprang to mind. And it does coincide with what I would *love*, deep-down :-)

Edit: Just seen the page itself. I know that font, but I can't place it!

It would be really awesome if it was EA (my dear, that would mean all Origin + Bullfrog + Westwood Studios games), but I really doubt it, GOG would quite certainly make a much greater fuss if that really was the case.

No, my money is firmly on Eidos/Square Enix, even though I have no idea how the current hint would fit.

Edit: Lucas Arts is the only other big publisher left, and their Star Wars games would obviously fit the hint. hmm...

GOG got Activision to sign a deal with them, aka the biggest publisher in gaming so it's not that crazy to think they might have gotten EA on board too.
