GOG News and Updates 2011

Publishers soon on GOG (1 in Summer and 2 in Fall):
3 out of these 5, if I got it right (or it's just one of these, plus other 2 not listed here).
- LucasArts
- Microsoft
- EA
- Square Enix
- T2

They will publish 25 games from that publisher. I think that EA is the one with the biggest pool of games here.

Other than Microsoft (which I would imagine is off the table anyhow), all of those publishers have 25 games that could be added to GoG.

Take Square-Enix: There are 5 Legacy of Kain and 6 pre-Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider titles. That's 11 from just two franchises. Add in Hitman, Deus Ex, Final Fantasy PC Ports, etc, and you get to 25 games easily.

I agree. If not Lucas Arts for early Spring than Eidos/Square Enix. But I would imagine that those are the three they in the process of signing.

EA doesn't seem to have much interest in releasing classics anywhere. Not even on their own store.

Wow, they managed to disappoint EVERYONE! I was waiting for the REAL GOG conference to start at 19:00 but it looks they simply pulled it ahead and that was it. Not that 7 more classics from Atari are a bad thing, but I was really under the impression they'd release a new publisher today.

Let's hope.

So, let's connect the Hints to the games, since we know they are from the Atari back catalogue:
What game made you dream of the stars?
What game made you ride with the Outlaws? Desperados?
What game made you fear your past?
What game made you go to the underworld?
What game made you feel like a hero? Quest for Glory?
What game made you afraid of the dark? Alone in the Dark

And one of them is the Witcher, probably that one:
What game made monsters fear you? The Witcher?

I'm not disappointed. :))

wtf? That was it? More atari games?
hehe. don't underestimate the catalogue of infogrames though, there is a lot left there. accolade, gremlin, gt, hasbro, legend, microprose, ocean (hehe). maybe they still own the beam stuff, not sure.

gogcluesatari.png

I guess we can start sleuthing. The clue list:

What game made you dream of the stars?
What game made you ride with the outlaws?
What game made you fear your past?
What game made you go to the underworld?
What game made you feel like a hero?
What game made monsters afraid of you?
What game made you afraid of the dark?

Monsters afraid of you has been confirmed as The Witcher
Afraid of the dark is Alone in the Dark

So... Dream of the Stars, Ride with the Outlaws, Fear your Past, Go to the Underworld and Feel like a Hero.

I believe Atari own Accolade (Star Control?), and AITD would be through Infogrames.

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desperados:_Wanted_Dead_or_Alive would fit for riding with the outlaws, and is an Infogrames title.

Any further thoughts?

Their PR department is terrible. They release all these clues and say wait for 13:00 Eastern, and the conference is already over by then. Then, they reveal one game (AITD), and that 6 more Atari games are coming. Pretty lame if you ask me.

Anyone have any idea of what games Atari has the rights to that aren't on GoG already?

EDIT:

Also, GoG has added a ton of awesome games in the past six months, so I can't really fault them. The Infinity Engine games, the rest of the Might and Magic series, the Last Express, etc. None of the other digital distributors seem to have much interest in getting these games available to buy and working on modern systems.

Ride with the outlaws: Probably Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive - which is a good Commandos knockoff in Wild West setting.

Guilty Gear X2 -just for graphix since i dont know how to fight- and Syberia 2 are the only ones that peak my interest. They sum a total of 16. So if i read the description correctly that will be my refound after Wicher 2.

Now put me there Monkey 4 (heck i'll even take 3), Fear 1 or Splinter Cell 3 and they could have some extra money courtesy of yours truly :D

F.E.A.R is on Steam. And I really hope you've got your Monkey Islands confused, because otherwise, there's no hope for you.

Don't buy on Steam, plus they are beoming way too successful so i don´t i´ll ever will.

Also i can't follow your comment regarding Monkey Island, didn't understand, sorry :)

You imply that offering you MI4 is superior to getting MI3. This... goes against generally-accepted wisdom.

Rollercoaster Tycoon would be good but I don't see it matching any clues, really.

Agreed, RollerCoaster Tycoon would be something I'd be happy to pick up. I hope it's one of the titles they announce.

I am sort of bothered by this, though. GOG provides a great service, and it bothers me that they continue to dick around with their customers through their marketing. I don't want to sound entitled, but when you build up hype through overly vague messages that could be any number of games people are hoping will show up on the service only to reveal the game your owners developed and some more Atari games it's hard to feel a little underwhelmed. I'm not knocking Atari games - Alone in the Dark is undeniably influential, and I've already stated my desire to pick up Rollercoaster Tycoon. But releasing more games from a publisher you're already dealing with and capping the whole thing off with your own game shouldn't have been hyped as a cryptic future announcement worthy of speculation. And now instead of being excited for the possibility of some awesome Atari games people are just upset that they're not getting System Shock or old Sierra games or what have you. You'd think after the whole "We're shutting down! LOL JK" fiasco they'd learn to be a little bit more transparent.

Ooooohhh! Thanks for explaining your comment. I have played the first 3 games but never got the chace to play 4. As for why i choose 3 above 1 and 2, its because 3 i played it only once so i don´t remember much of the game.

In the end they have something really special going on here so sooner or later i will dive in. Commit the sin of not paying much atention to the service before until i hear today about Witcher 2 free of DRM at GoG. So mission acomplished.

MI4 is pretty damn awful, so you haven't missed out on anything by not playing it.

Hey, I just realised something about Alone in the Dark (comparing the stuff on GoG with my boxed AitD trilogy pack): No Jack in the Dark?

Edit: Oops. It's right there in the text! It's just not listed directly in the lineup.

I dunno, I think they toned it down a bunch, comparing this to their other stunt is a big stretch.

They announced two of the seven games, and that they may get three large publishers this year, one for certain.

I guess the payoff is not as good as what we got from the other PR stunt (Infinity engine games), but on the other hand the damage is not nearly as bad either.

Yea, they could have been completely transparent and said, guys we're releasing 7 atari games, have fun! Oh and we got a new publisher. But where's the fun in that? You had to expect their clues wouldn't work the way you wanted them to, I guess it's just not GOG's style to have it so clean and dry.

I have never played any of the Alone in the Darks, from what i can see its alot like Resi 1 (which i still love playing to this day) but more focused on horror and puzzles, would i be right ? Are they worth playing ?

I'd say it's the other way around: Resident Evil is a lot like Alone in the Dark (Capcom pretty much stole all the gameplay ideas from AitD). :P

But you are completely right with your assessment: AitD is like Resident Evil, but with much more puzzles and Lovecraftian horror.

They are definitely worth playing and I recommend them with the following caveats:
-The games are very archaic in their controls and interface design, i.e. you need to double-tap the up key to run and you need to go to the inventory screen to change between fighting and searching mode. Combat is also pretty stiff and a bit awkward. Thankfully you can save at any time which takes away much of the difficulty and allows you to try out various ways to tackle a scenario.
-The puzzles are mostly logical, but there are some that are completely insane (another thing Resident Evil copied from AitD) and some require that you stand in a very specific place or they won't work, even though you are using the correct item on the correct item. So don't feel bad about using a walkthrough when you get stuck.

I haven't played AitD 1 and 3 in years (never played 2), but they're worth playing. But yeah, the controls are kinda clunky, and the graphics in AitD 1 make Final Fantasy VII look like a current-gen HD game. As for the story, AitD 1 is very Lovecraftian in tone, while AitD 3 was basically a ghost story set in some deserted western town or something (as mentioned, I haven't played these games in probably 13 years).

I'm not even sure if Alone in the Dark 2 and 3 are supposed to be scary. The first one is about Lovecraft and a haunted mansion, but then 2 is about pirates and 3 is about cowboys. Nonsense.

AITD1 >>> RE1

Yeah, that's kind of sad. I'd buy RCT again in an instant but it's almost certainly not on the list.

IIRC Atari aren't allowed to sell RCT anymore under court order after they screwed Chris Sawyer out of royalties on it.

So, they said they'd reveal what all those clues were about and they only revealed one? Wow, the GOG marketing team needs to be shot.

They've said they are Atari games, now they're just staggering out the releases. Judging from this thread, the GOG marketing team did an adequate job. Still bummed that they didn't announce a new publisher after making it appear like they would, though.

Only problem is I don't know what else Atari really has. I mean, GT Interactive's library has been pretty much exhausted unless they're going to put up "Beavis & Butthead Golf: Bunghole in One"

Second is the worst imo, I loved the third one, great music too.

Is Jack in the Dark included ?

Tales didn't live up to my expectations, wouldn't say it was a sequel to CMI either. Felt like an entirely different thing, which is fine.

Why? Seems like the marketing machine got a bunch of people interested in a fairly boring update to the roster. Nice to see new Atari games but it certainly isn't the big news I was hoping for. At least they have FINALLY got The Witcher up there. Seemed silly it was on Steam but not GOG since it is a CD Project game and all (also it is Good and a game and not entirely new).

From 10th of May all GOG.com users who want to buy the highly anticipated sequel to Geralt’s adventures, will have the opportunity to pre-purchase the game and pre-download almost all of it.
This is very awesome.

What game made you dream of the stars? Captain Blood?
What game made you ride with the outlaws? Desperados?
What game made you fear your past? Indigo Prophecy / Farenheit?
What game made you go to the underground? Boiling Point: Road to Hell?
What game made you feel like a hero? Neverwinter Nights 2?

Ghost Cowboys.

Also, zombie pirates.

But yeah. AITD1 is scary (My younger self found the pipe room just too unsettling). 2 and 3, much less so.

Could we stop the mindless Monkey 4 bashing please? The "there was no Monkey 4" ultra-hilarious joke gets repeated in every single thread even tangentially related to the series. Monkey 4 is a well written game with good puzzles, perhaps even better puzzles than Monkey 3. Yes, it's ugly, has a little different tone than the rest of the series and - the greatest offense of all, apparently - doesn't fit with the established canon. So what, I ask, if it's still a very good game?

Make sure to always read any books you find lying around in AITD1. It is very important.

It isn't enjoyable in any way. I didn't find it funny at all. I thought the story was stupid. My OPINION is that MI4 was not a good game and I don't recommend it to people wanting to try the series. As such I would prefer the first MI game available on GOG to be of a higher quality, lest we scare people away from the series.

25 near ready to go has got to be Lucasarts. Any other publisher's library would probably be staggered out more. Most classic Lucasarts titles just need to be thrown into ScummVM and put on the website.

I don't think EA is one of the two ready for the fall either. Probably Take2 and Square (releasing Deus Ex on gog would be good way to promote/capitalize on HR's release)

Microsoft is never joining and EA is kind of a longshot.

If it's indeed LucasArts, I don't know, but I don't think they will license Star Wars related games (SW seems to be something totally separated from the rest of LucasArts). That would limit the game catalogue a lot.

Lucasarts has put all the dark forces/jedi knight games on DD, so I don't see why they'd exclude SW elsewhere.

But 25 titles really only leaves 2 options, EA or Lucasarts and since Lucas has classic stuff out there already that makes them the more likely option.

Monkey Kombat.

Also the best joke in the game is 5 minutes in.
