GOG News and Updates 2011

Windows 7 isn't listed but has anyone been able to get it to work?

I haven't done any comprehensive testing of all features but it installs and runs ok on Win 7 64bit for me. I do get a windows message saying my color scheme has changed to basic when it starts but it reverts back to my normal color scheme when I exit the game.

OH SHIT, STAR CONTROL 1 AND 2 ARE ON GOG. Manuals, starmap and soundtrack too (I never had the starmap on the collection I bought on CD).

When did this happen?!?

PS. I'm aware of Ur-Quan Masters, but if CD Projekt can get the rights for it, surely it means we could get it on other systems or get more updated versions (or even a true sequel!).

Toys for Bob has had the rights for years now. He's always talked about wanting to do a sequel, but hasn't been able to talk his current publisher (Activison) into it.

Not really sure if they even have the chops to pull it off and do it justice at this point anyway.

EDIT: Oh I guess Activision actually bought them, so they own the IP, so yeah, we'll never see another Star Control.

Ah, fair enough. I thought they'd lost the naming rights so any new games they did wouldn't have that name (hence Ur-Quan Masters rather than Star Control 2).

I bet they could pull off a pretty awesome MMO in the SC universe, though.

Heh, I was gonna say. Glad I waited.

So anyone have any opinions on MegaRace series? Would it hold up?
I think I'll buy the GOG Versions for the soundtracks. Maybe. Gonna get Still Life tho.

Been a long time since I played MegaRace, but I think without any nostalgia for Lance Boyle, you should probably pass.

Haha, fuck. Just bought Syberia 1 & 2 on Steam yesterday.
How much did you paid at Steam?

Still Life is really good, and very pretty.
Was considering this one. How it compares to other genre giants?

Apart of the 2 Syberias and Still Life is anything else worth to check out in the weekend offer?

Btw, expecting a special offer for something like "Baldur's Gate 2" at GoG is not realistic. Right?

That said, I have to say that Lance Boyle is about the best FMV character from that era. He's awesome. I wonder if I can still recite the intro monologue.

Always hate seeing games released in an incomplete form on GOG (insert The Witcher 2 joke), should have included the expansion that Steam sells it with, even if it means more price points or just waiting another year to get the 9.99 one.

MM6 special edition I believe includes all of the previous games so you're covered on that front. Definitely buy MM7 though if you like what you play of MM6.

If you mean traditional RPG M&M then I'd go with the pack that nets you 1-6. If you mean Heroes of Might and Magic then go with 3.

The 6-pack is the best deal. You are basically paying an extra $4 to get the first 5 games, even if they are dated. Out of VI, VII and VIII, I'd say M&M VI is best, with VII being a very close second.

EDIT: I agree that HOMM3 is the best out of the Heroes series. 2 is also really good but a little more dated. 1 and 4 are skip-able unless you fall in love with the series.

Another question, what is Spellforce like? Specifically 1 since it's on sale and complete.

I've praised it here before. I think the Spellforce games are very good, not enough people give them a try. Excellent mix of RPG and strategy.

Point and click adventure games. They have good art style and an interesting universe. It reminds me of The Longest Journey, except no way as good. They're worth at least a playthrough.

New release, and this one's a bit good. So good it's been rereleased all over the shop loads of times.

Rayman 2

Still, $6. And now we can have the brief round of people being astounded that there was a PC version. I know I am :-)

All D&D RPGs were 30% off during last year's holiday sale.
I see, so there's some hope. The game is 10 U.S. good, but since i know i won't complete it, might end up thinking as a waste of money for me.

The 6 price is permanent? It's the best action game in their catalogue, going by my fickle memory.

It's an instant buy for me if it supports the 360 pad. Anyone knows about this?

Edit: Regarding the game, how was the prot handling? I mean the DreamCast version looked amazing, so was the subsequent PS2 one. How does this one compares to those versions or is it a high resedf N64 game?

Better than Beyond Good & Evil, MDK, Star Control 2, Giants, or Outcast?

hmm.. just came across Desperados on here. Does anyone know anything about this? It says it's like Commandos, but I've never played that game either. In a wild west kick after RDR and the visuals on this game actually look great. $6 is almost a throw away price to try out, but if anyone has comments they'd be welcomed.

Oh my god yes. Rayman 2 has one of the best platforming levels of all time in The Precipice, and the rest of it is brilliant. Amazing stuff.

Freakin' sweet. The PC version of Rayman 2 is great, and this is literally the easiest way to get it installed on a 64 bit system (it was one of those rare but annoying games where the installer was 16-bit even though the game itself was 32-bit). <3 GOG installer.

Quite a few impressions around post 800 onwards.

Well don't know about Star Control 2. All the others i've played and in my judgement, Ray 2 holds a lot better up to these days than all of those, specially if we compare them to todays platformers.

To be sincere, MDK felt more groundbreacking to me at the time but now it feels too outdated. Beyond Good and Evil, more of action/adventure similar to a Zelda game not so much action or platforming and its too easy.

Some games are so good that they maintain their relevance and great "feel" for even a decade after the release. These are the really special games, which are rare to come by and Ray 2 belongs to this group, a great achievement considering its in a perspective and genre that gets easily outdated. Take Mario 64 as another example of this.

Edit: I was asking about wireless Xbox360 pas support for Rayman 2. Just to be clear.

I bought the disc version of Rayman 2 a few months ago at a rummage sale.

Unless GOG added the option, Rayman 2 itself doesn't offer any way to remap a controller pad. You're going to have to use an external program for that.

I'm guessing the game was based on the Dreamcast version, but I am not well versed in the matter.

Rayman 2 is not better than Outcast, but it is better than Giants.

AFAIK the PC version of Rayman 2 is based on the Dreamcast version. It supports all resolutions and I'm fairly certain that its widescren is Hor+
It looks great.

Gamepads work but there is no way to remap the controls. For an Xbox 360 pad with the official drivers this is unfortunate because you're not going to be able to use the triggers (they occupy a single axis) and Xpadder isn't a perfect (but still manageable) solution.
