GOG News and Updates 2011

My money is on Lucas Arts. They've already shown willingness to put their old titles up on DD platforms. EA has a hard time putting their new games up on competing DD platforms.

I think they are overselling the epicness if it is LucasArts.

Syndicate
Ultima Games
System Shock

So many I really want to play again.
This. Or LucasArts. Gimme!

Not if they get X-Wing and TIE Fighter out of LucasArts. Those games (TIE Fighter anyway) are the epitome of good old games. TIE Fighter is arguably the best space sim ever made. Same is true of Grim Fandango to adventure games. EA does seem to be more catered to GOG's audience, but both LA and EA would be great additions, hopefully the other gets picked up later in the year.

I predict Lucasarts which is AWESOME even though I'd rather have EA.

BTW, I've always wanted to play those old Discworld adventure games. Who owns those?

Psychosis published but have since been bought by Sony, and so I suspect the license rights are murky at best.

And with as awesome as gog is I'm sure they'll give us the Tie Fighter iMUSE version.

I think Infogrames/Atari has the rights to Discworld Noir. As for the other two I felt that they represented the worst aspects of adventure games in terms of obtuse puzzles and pixel hunting.

I would do dirty things to have a GOG copy of Noir. As someone who has read all the Discworld books and loves Noir it was a wet dream for me.

They will probably bundle all the old Tie Fighter/Xwing games together going by previous releases. With papercraft!

So Noir is significantly better than the other two?

I'd say it's significantly more *modern*. Much more streamlined design, more logical puzzling. If the original Discworlds were, say, the King's Quests, Noir is Broken Sword.

Also: Rob Brydon, before he was particularly well-known.

It'll be so nice to have Grim Fandango working without external installers and endless tweaks to get proper fullscreen and gamepad support in Win 7.

Thanks for the Noir information, by the way.

I've just had a further thought which is starting to convince me that it's Lucasarts (although I continue to stress, I would prefer EA!). Cast your mind back to E3 2009. Or rather, just *before* E3 2009? Before E3 got going for good, we had a bunch of announcements relating to Lucasarts making good use - briefly - of their old properties: Tales from Monkey Island announced, Monkey Island: Special Edition and a bunch of their older stuff appearing on Steam for the first time.

GoG's conference is at a similar time relative to E3.

It really isn't much of an argument, but, well, it rings bells.

(Are we all agreed that we want 2K eliminated next, ideally? I've not heard too many people championing them)

Saw today that System Shock 2 is at the top of the GOG.com wishlist. Dungeon Keeper 2 made an appearance also. I really hope EA get on board as those are two TRULY classic titles that could use a new life.

Take 2 was the least good choice of the five, so they're certainly the least good choice of the three. I also don't think they would say it's the "biggest announcement ever", given that the Atari-Hasbro stuff far eclipses Take 2's catalogue in relevance, particularly if games available on other services are removed from contention.

Actually, "Biggest announcement ever" might be a little misleading, simply because they've got Activision already, and only one of any of those companies strikes me as even coming *close* to competing with Activision for sheer size.

If we take "Biggest announcement ever" at face value, I don't see any way it can't be EA. But they're preserving some mystery, so I'm not sure we should take that at face value.

Maybe the announcement is multiple publishers (LA now, EA later), who knows. It's not like GOG's never been misleading before either. :)

I'm sort of leaning towards this opinion because they're using logos of all the publishers, which I don't think they could without getting their permission. So why would a company let someone else use their logo if there's nothing in it for them, in fact it would be used to promote a competitor (the one publisher that would get announced)?

I never really bought that argument that what they're doing is illegal. There's no slander or anything involved, is GOG not allowed to use a copyrighted logo in reference to talking about another company? Could be, but seems like a stretch to me.

By my "It's not like GOG's never been misleading before either," that was meant more as damage control, in case it wasn't clear, we all know how people are always disappointed by these things. Even the last one with the clues and 5 publishers was a bit of a letdown to some people.

I wasn't trying to imply that they're doing something illegal, but from when I first saw that page it seemed odd to me that they would outright say "These are the candidates, people" together with their official logos and all. They used to be more secretive before.

I did a quick google on logos and it seems that if you use a logo without the owner's permission it classifies as copywright infringement. But I'm a complete layman here so I might be wrong.

"Biggest" doesn't have to mean quantity. Look at how big the Infinity Engine games being released was, and that was just a handful. Lucasarts games would mean a LOT to the demographic that buys from GOG.

I really, really, really hope it is EA, but they still have a dinosaur philosophy in regards to digital distribution (sup fucking over Steam), so I'm trying to temper my hopes.

If we frame it on that sort of philosophy, then I'd use a different counterargument; I'd suggest that the Infinity Engine games announcement would trump Lucasarts', there. A lot of the wind's been taken out of the Lucasarts sails thanks to the fact that a lot of the highlights are on Steam already (although, that said, I freely concede that the remaining games are sorely missed.), whereas none of the Infinity Engine titles were available *anywhere* at the time of release.

List of stuff EA is hording:

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
System Shock 1&2
Syndicate
Syndicate Wars
Populous (series)
Command & Conquer and Red Alert (series)
Ultima (series)
Dungeon Keeper 1&2
Ultima Underworld 1&2
Bard's Tale (series)
Theme Park (series)
Theme Hospital
Blade Runner
Crusader (series)
Wing Commander (series)
Privateer
Lands of Lore (series)
The Sims (series)
SimCity (series)
Magic Carpet 1&2
American McGee's Alice
SimTower
SimAnt
Other Sim games that arent as good
Eye of the Beholder (series)
Dune II
Legend of Kryrandia (series)
Bioforge
Battlefield (series)
Medal of Honor (series)
Burnout (series)
Need for Speed (series)
Rallisport Challenge
The Neverhood
Clive Barker's Undying

I probably missed a bunch of shit.

This is definitely the strangest list I've ever made:

X Wing = BG1
TIE Fighter = BG2
Grim Fandango = Planescape Torment
DotT / S&M:FP = IWD 1 / 2
KOTOR 2 = ToEE

And they still have a bunch left over (all the above and a bunch at that link are unavailable).

That sort-of works, actually. I do have a tendency to munge all the X-Wing titles together in my head (well, actually, I just think of TIE Fighter when I think of the entire X-Wing pantheon, which works just as well).

I'd still say that there's a little too much Star Wars in that comparison for me to be completely comfortable, but I guess that's always going to be unavoidable.

Latest comic includes "Get huge with gog.com EEE2/6LA". That would suggest to me E3, 6th June, Lucasarts.

That said, not quite sure just why E3's part of the clue. And LA *could* be Los Angeles. But... S'probably Lucasarts.

Assuming, of course, that the clue isn't deliberately hinting at Lucasarts because That's What GoG Does.

Edit: Oh, wait, does Lucasarts have a pre-E3 press conference lined up?

Edit2: The commentary also points out the Space Needle's inclusion as an 'enormous needle'. Hmmm. I wonder how big a Ball of Twine you'd need to go with that needle?

Get HUGE formula immediately makes me think of the DoTT intro, but I just have LA on my mind now, it can probably work for hundreds of game.

Most surprising thing ive read on GAF in a long while.

I really enjoyed Privateer 2 as well (never played the first), I'd be happy with either publisher's space sims.

Privateer 2 did bother me when I realised it wasn't actually in the Wing Commander universe. Still, it was perfectly servicable.

One thing I'd forgotten - and now can't quite find the quote, but I assume it's somewhere - is that the new publisher was supposed to open up 25+ games for release.

Also, random thought that just sprung to mind: While I've gone on record as stating I'd prefer EA, I wouldn't object to Lucasarts if it meant playing Night Shift again. I have the skills to operate Bingham's Environmentally-Active Solution for Toys, and they've been untapped for too long!

What is this I dont even...

I never understood why people didn't like Privateer 2, but I guess that's because I didn't play the first, so had no expectations for it. Yes it's a campy game with the FMV, even if there's a few B-name actors iirc, but for the time it looked incredible and it had a fun job system and lots of ships to upgrade parts with. The HUD was nearly perfect I remember thinking.

Privateer is one of the best space sims ever created. The only thing the sequel has going for it is its graphics and presentation. Everything else was mediocre at best (story) or broken as a rule (game itself, AI).

The FMV was campy, but the acting talent was impressive. Clive Owen, Christopher Walken and John Hurt are all exceptional actors, with the latter two being probably two of the best actors around today.

I also never played Privateer 1, and I also haven't played P2 since I was 14 or so, so it may be a huge let down...

It will be pretty funny (read: very sad) when it's 2k and it's just the X-com pack.

Just to scare people: The big 2K pack on Steam? It's called the 2K HUGE Pack.

As much as I would love Lucasarts, this list reminds me how awesome EA could be. I mean, I forgot Populous and would love to play it again with Syndicate, SS2, etc.

Hefty pinch of salt time: One of Gog's resident Crusader: No Remorse fans claims to have heard (from a friend of a friend... apply salt *now*) what the announcement is... and is *extremely* excited.

That said, he did tweet to a Bioware Mythic guy and an Ultima fansite guy, and got coyness and knowing winks in return.

Supposedly, "Tip: Gather as many credits as you can. You will need it." is a clue. Is that a direct quote from the Crusaders? I don't recall.
