Going to a bar for the first time

You better order a motherfucking AMF, motherfucker. It's your 21st birthday, not some morherfucking family night out.

"wtf you don't know how to do bar stuff having never been to a bar?? It's not rocket science just make sure you do bar-thing-1 and bar-thing-2 and don't do bar-thing-3. How could you possibly not know these things? Is it your first time or something??"

If you don't want to feel like shit in the morning avoid any of the 'well' drinks and at least upgrade from Bartons and Montezuma to Svedka or Sauza. Some good bars do have good base spirits though.

I always stick to this one rule that keeps me from barfing; don't mix the hard stuff. If I start with tequila, I stay with tequila, and so on. Drinking rum, whiskey, Baileys, vodka, etc., all in one night is a fast way to being face down on the floor with shitty pants. Other than that, just tip well, be yourself, and don't be a dick and you'll be fine. Also, absolutely DO NOT fight; nothing worse than getting your ass whooped in front of a girlfriend.

The fine wrestler posting above reminded me that 'Beer before whisky is pretty risky' can be true. Beer works its way into your system slower than a spirit so that after drinking a few lagers a person might feel fine and decide to add a shot on top of that. What can end up happening is all the drinks hit at once and then the floor begins to rapidly feel less steady than the sure support it provided just minutes ago.

Haha, imagine that. When you said a lot of bars in the downtown area I had a fleeting thought that you might be here. Turns out to be true.

OK, here goes:

Molly Brown: My personal favorite. It's kind of a misfits bar but not really. Good vibe, lots of pool tables and probably the best beer selection of all the downtown bars and is definitely the best spot in the Barmuda triangle.

Haufbrau: At night it's a crowded hippy bar with loud performances, not bad when it's more chill, and it's cool for a visit since you're doing a pub crawl. They have excellent burgers during the day. Check em out sometime, during lunch hours.

Scoop: Possibly the sketchiest bar in town by word of mouth. But is mostly fine just not with the best selection of brew. Also looks the worst from the inside.

Bacchus Pub: Awesome hang out pub, can be crowded sometimes. Good bartenders and staff with a good selection. Popping by here first would make sense since it's the absolute first in the downtown bar scene.

The Cannery: Not bad but not the best, decent selection and usually very nice bartenders. Good for one drink.

The Plonk: Has a reputation of being the "hipster" bar, but is actually pretty good and has an avant garde feel to it. Great bartenders who can make some of the best mixed drinks in town. A little more expensive than other places, but not by a lot(like one dollar more maybe).

The Copper: One of my other favorites with the Molly and Bacchus. Great bartenders and great selection for whiskey. Some are expensive but for good reason. I'd definitely check it out since it has a nice vibe and is probably the most chill bar in town.

The Crystal: Famous and/or infamous for their happy hour. Which depending on when can be a little bit too crowded. It's decent, not the best by any stretch of the imagination but definitely should be a part of any pub crawl here.

Finn: Tries to be classy, I have to admit I haven't drank there since it used to be Santa Fe Reds(which was a shitshow that I've been to on too many occasions). Looks chill from what I've seen.

Rockin R Bar: Dear god, could be the second worst bar in town. Crowded as hell during weekends with the worst of the worst you think of when you think college town. I used to spend a lot of time there before most of the international kids I hung out with moved back to their respective countries. Can be a lot of fun though, as I've enjoyed my time there before. Don't be surprised if the waitresses and drinks suck, though.

The Legion: I like the bar almost solely cause I befriended a bartender on one of my pub crawls and he gets me free drinks all the time. It's a good bar to hang out in despite the claustrophobic lay out. I'd check it out.

Bar 9: Known as the worst bar in town and where you have the highest chance of being roofied. Douchebag frat boy central. I'd experience it if I haven't before. But if you avoid any bar in town, it should be that one.

317: It's cool, check it out. Nothing special but that's all I can say really.

The Pourhouse: Meh, check it out since you haven't. But I never really cared for it. It does have tables and waitresses so if you just want to chill you can.

Zebra: Cool bar, but usually has a cover change since there's always a band playing. Never worth it when there's a cover charge. Otherwise, yeah check it out.

Colonel Blacks: Personally love it, probably the only bar in town that serves absinthe. Great vibe and has two lounge areas where you can just chill out on a couch. Check it out.

The Eagles: A friend of mine bounces there. It's mostly a bar for the older crowd and looks old as hell. It's the other veterans bar along with Legion. It's worth checking out in my opinion since it's the only bar in Bozeman with a real dart board.

As far as bars not in Downtown bozeman:

Cat's Paw: Go in with a group if you can. As you may know anything on north 7th is shady. It's decent but mostly for the guys coming in from the trailer parks, if that influences your decision.

Mixers: Country bar which is pretty decent, a little farther away from pub crawl lengths.

Specs: Ok sport's bar that has ok food. Not much else to say.

Hide-A-Away Lounge: Very chill and cool sports bar with good food.

Hope that helps.

Thanks man! I ended up going to the Plonk, Molly Brown, and the Rocking R, and they lined up pretty much with your recommendations. I'm gonna save this post for future reference.

I had a really great night out, and its nice to be able to drink openly and not just at parties or in private. Can't wait to try some other places out.

Thanks again for everyone's recommendations and thoughts!

Don't step on anyone's shoes and be sure to arrive equipped with a fanny pack. It's a dangerous world out there.

I brought my Spongebob backpack, and seemed to work out pretty well. I must've misplaced my fanny pack...

Order Hicks & Healey and talk in a fake English accent to confuse the bartender. Tell him you commanded a ship as a Cornish pirate at one time. Order 10 drinks and before you go do a backender in the chair and pass out on the floor. You won't regret one bit of this. Your lady friend will think you manly.

Hmm. This all makes sense then. I usually stop around 3 drinks give or take. But if you're drinking about 10 drinks a night then I see how $20 makes sense. Pays for itself since you're getting free drinks and the like.

And 10 drinks? You're gonna be a mess at the meetup. Don't try and make out with me or anything.

Make out with Jipan.
Big brother is watching you. I agree with on getting 3 drinks per outing, 5 beers if it's an open bar/2 cups of wine (never both)/3 mixed drinks. In my younger days I would've gone crazy with the drinking but there's only so much money in my account. Plus I usually tip 2 bucks for at least 2 drinks before stopping.
I'm a former frat boy. I've held my liquor fairly well.

IMO, city bars skimp on the alcohol, which is why I end up getting 9-10 drinks.
It takes a bit of alcohol to get a good buzz in me.

Damn son! The fact that you tip $20 plus drink like a fish means you can drink with the likes of heavyweights such as Mully, EviLore, and smokey. I can't drink so heavily any more. It's too much for me. I do enjoy feeling temporarily buzzed but nothing past that point.

Like AbortedWalrusFetus said, I drink more to enjoy the drink and relax than to get hammered. Do agree that city bars are pretty stingy with the alcohol to mixed drink ratio. If I were to become a bar regular, then I would be more generous with the tip even I understand what you're getting at.

Then again, the frequency in which I find myself going back to Valhalla is ridiculous. I seriously love that bar with Pony Bar right behind it. It's all about the chill bars where I can go and make good conversation with a group of people. The amount of bars we've been to on meet ups is insane but I'm thankful for having introduced me to new places.

Hey my 21st is tomorrow, *high five*

I'm going down to Atlantic City to gamble and fuck shit up. I'm very much so looking forward to it lol

Just be cool and don't act like a creep. Thats all there is too it really. It can seem daunting at first but its really not a big deal.
Atlantic City! My hometown breh

Which casino's? Tropicana is one of the more modern ones atm

I'm blushing right now that you've compared me to the great one, EviLore...

I used to do keg stands and the like in college. Not any more, but I have a fairly good tolerance with alcohol.

As long as you're not downing shots left and right, like any muscle, you can train your tolerance.

Since I'm on my ways into saving for a new place to live, my bank account is staying tiny.
