Good 70s/80s horror flicks?

So, some time ago, I caught some horror film from the 70s or 80s on television. It left an impression, not because it was scary (which, to twelve year-old me, it totally was), but because of how trippy it felt. I don't particularly remember any details, but after watching Alien 3 tonight, and having a discussion with my roommate about puppets vs CGI, I do find myself wanting to watch some older 70s/80s horror film, especially ones with puppetry.

Aside from Alien/Thing/Predator/Evil Dead/Dawn of the Dead films, let's assume I've never seen any horror films from the era.

What should I be watching?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre
American Werewolf in London
Hellraiser
Return of the Living Dead
Re-Animator
Halloween
Nightmare on Elm Street

Also not 80s, but great nonetheless: Cemetery Man

Forbidden world, death ship, night of the comet, cannibal ferox, cannibal holocaust, vampire lovers, and videodrome.

Cat People
Don't Look Now
Body Double
Dressed to Kill
The Vanishing
The Shining
The Fly
Possession

Off the top of my head.

Whatever I watched all those years ago had a big white snake in it (as diameter as big as an adult's forearm). IIRC, a woman changed into it. Don't think it was Lair of the White Worm, especially since I'm not sure how that would have made it onto television without being heavily censored.

Off the top of my head.

I've seen the original Cat People. Not sure I'd have any fun watching the remake.

The Shining was pretty great though.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Polgergeist.

I've got a query about 80s/90s horror films. Anyone remember one with clowns that killed some teens and they could teleport up and down manhole covers (?) like the Mortal Kombat robots? I still remembering seeing it in a Blackpool hotel here in UK as a kid in the 90s.

Another one where someone pulls floss out of their mouth in the bathroom and it keeps on going and going until the whole room is filled with floss? Shit gave me nightmares. I'm not even sure if it was a dream I made up.

The Ring did that kind of thing recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9abCIgGxT4

THE EVIL DEAD, Evil Dead 2, Videodrome, Hellraiser, A Nightmare on Elm Street 1 and 3, Alien, The Thing and Poltergeist are my favorites.

I bolded the best ones though.

e: sorry I didn't see your second to last line but Evil Dead is amazing anyway. Carrie is also amazing. Angel Heart too and that probably won't get mentioned.

DocSeuss, have you seen Altered States? Trippy sci-fi horror. Saw that recently, was amazing.

Puppetry meaning practical monster effects?

American Werewolf in London, From Beyond, Basket Case, Pumpkinhead, Creepshow, The Howling, Twilight Zone The Movie, TerrorVision, Humanoids From the Deep...

A lot of the non-sequels actually hold up reasonably well, and a lot of them have already been mentioned here.

Hellraiser in particular, if I'm in the right mood, can still get under my skin a little bit. Videodrome is also good, but it really straddles that line between "horror" and "Well, that sure was Cronenberg social commentary. Again." (It's *solid* commentary, though. Highly recommended.)

I'd also recommend some of Dario Argento's work. People either love it or find it a little dull, but either way I personally feel that it's required viewing.
