Good/bad updates to character designs

What the fuck are the straps in his arms for? Fast heroine access? And if so, he's got them on the wrong part and 1 too many.

I agree. That early Zelda art just has this effortlessly magical look.

It looked like a real fairy tale-inspired anime. I loved the art in the instruction book.

On the other hand, Twilight Princess looks like every other Peter Jackson/LOTR-inspired fantasy game on planet earth.

So you never wear ANYTHING that is of no use whatsoever but look good on you? You know, like rings, necklaces, wristbands, anything?

neither good or bad, really. but raiden's character design update is probably the most depressing in the history of gaming. dude is only a head and spine now. he can't fuck anymore

One head and one spine too many. The whiny asshole needs to be vaporized.

First, to answer your question: nope.

Second, I thought he was a soldier in training, not a trend setter. I guess you're right, though. I hadn't noticed the extra (and way loose) waist belts that would be more hindering in battle than helpful. Maybe Leon is a retired model in KH.

He was a soldier in training, but those were his regular civil clothes. His uniform was different, and as with most cases in Final Fantasy games, the uniform was simple and unhindering.

Either way, at least you acknowledged that not everything you wear has to be of any use, especially not in a fantasy game. :P

There you go, I fixed up the positioning of some of your punctuation. Next time, don't type so fast.

I'm so sorry. I don't actually mean this. I saw the arrangement of words in your post and the joke pretty much wrote itself.

I can't imagine he'd be very comfortable in those leather pants though. And that leather jacket for that matter. I'd hate to be him on laundry day.

the tp versions of ganon and ganondorf look so cool. it's a shame the actual fight wasn't better

My point is it's the same design, fanart or no. The look is one thing, but I'm talking 'tude and general baby-facery as well. I know it's a prequel, so he's meant to be younger, but in terms of character design it was bad IMO.

Not the most flattering of screens, but yuck! It annoys me just to look at him.

This is a perfect example of how some designs are improved through production, and some are clearly worsened. Most are a complete abomination compared to the original works.
Sorry PL, but considering how many images went into that post it's a bit of an epic fail. Amano wasn't the character designer for FF IX, so none of those are examples of the process of going from concept to render. FF IX's character designs were from Toshiyuki Itahana, Shukou Murase, and Shin Nagasawa. Those Amano versions are still quite cool, but they're as much after-the-fact reinterpretations as, say, his image of Cloud and Aeris.

I like that Lara Croft's breasts have gradually become smaller. Nothing is more annoying than seeing some big boobed female wearing heels jumping all over the place. Taki from Soul Calibur especially. It is stupid and frankly sort of sexist. Good move Lara, you are becoming a real woman.

I thought 3 was the worst design of Dante by far, they made him look like some crappy Jpop band member then Kick Ass Super hot Devil Hunter. Its still Dante though...So hes hot:lol But the design just felt lacking. Glad they fix it up with 4 ^_^

I'll be damned if I didn't think the 'Megaman/Rockman Zero' art design on the GBA games wasn't fucking amazing looking. It seriously stands as one of the only art styles that I felt were perfect looking...loved the use of color and the painted look to the art itself.

Holy fuck...talk about an abomination...Maximo's design in 1 and 2 were superb--wait...MAXIMO 3??????

edit: game was cancelled eh? On one hand, I desperately would like a third...on the other...if the early character art looked that bad, then I wouldn't want to see how they would butcher the gameplay

Lol, you're asking why a Nomura design has random straps/buckles? Like anyone knows!

To not so awesome:

The biggest thing I have to say in regards of character design progression is that 'adding more' doesn't mean 'making better.'

That's true. But at the same time, look at Pit:

They added a whole butt-load of stuff and he still turned out pretty good.

I was under the impression that Amano was the original character concept artist and general concept artist. I seem to remember the talk at the time that FF9 was the return of Amano to FF, his first PS FF where his character concepts would be used instead of Suckmura. Moby credits him as "Graphics / Artwork", Wiki credits Amano as the original character designer.

While I'm not sure I could say I loved the look from the start, I think you're right that they nailed the Zero series look. I always thought that X4+ suffered in that it's overall look wasn't cohesive (background elements compared to foreground). It distanced itself from X1-3 in that regard. Zero had an altogether excellent artistic vision and I felt it was one of the few series to push 2D platforming aesthetically over the past decade. And they were GBA games to boot.

Yes, I usually put on 10 mini-arm-belts before going out, because you never know when someone might try to slash your arm with a claymore.

Amano's credits in post-VI FFs

VII: Image Illustrator
VIII: Image Illustration
IX: Graphics / Artwork
X: Image Illustrator
XII: Image Illustration

It does seem like his role in IX was somewhat different than the others, but if he was really the origin of the characters, there's no reason to leave him out of the actual credit for it. IX was widely seen as more stylistically similar to the pre-VII games, so it's not hard to see why people might think it returned to the people actually responsible for the earlier ones.

that is what we in the business call "marketing"!

If it helps it says "Image Illustration" in the opening credits. Interestingly he's the second person (right after Hideo Minaba - art director and right before Uematsu)

Way later it says Character Design: Shukou Murase, Toshiyuki Itahana.
