Good, cheap hotel in Tokyo?

So, I'm going to Tokyo this fall and as the hotel we stayed at, and liked, last trip is fully booked (Tokyu Inn Shinbashi) I would love some tips on good and cheap ones. Preferably close to the subway (black line, forgot its name) and as we like Shinbashi, around there somewhere. I'll stay there a week in late September/early October.

Edit: couch surfing, hostels or anything that's not a real hotel room with a shower and automatic buttwash toilet with a remote is out of the picture.

Edit 2: Went with Shimbashi Samankan Hotel! Thanks for all the great answers!

Take a sleeping bag and just kick it with the homeless. I get off at Shinagawa station and there are dudes living in boxes with LCD screens bigger than my own.

I'm staying at the same time (Arrive 30th September) stay at the hotel Sakura in Ikebukero, costing me about 6,000 yen a night for a single room with a private shower. Seems to be the best rate I can find for a 3 star hotel in Tokyo. Good hotel, has really good reviews on tripadvisor.

After all the amazing reviews from Gaf regarding Airbnb, I would recommend looking there as well unless having a a hotel specifically is what you need.

Yeah, I'm not really into that. Rather like a nice private hotel room when traveling:)

Ah, tried to search for that thread. Already have most of the trip planned and know how to get around though.

I stayed at the Dai Ichi Inn Ikebukuro last time I was there. Rooms were small but it's pretty cheap and it's literally right next to Ikebukuro Station, which is one of the main hubs in Tokyo, making it really convenient for getting around. Plenty of places to eat and drink around there too.

Sounds lovely! Will check it out!

Look for a nice Ryokan.

Well,I'd rather have a moderately comfortable bed than a futon really.

Could always stay in a capsule hotel!

We could, but we won't because it looks like an awful way to spend any amount of time in.

In many locations you can get 1 bedroom/studio apartments where the owners aren't around and they're no other house guests to share with.

But if you want a hotel specifically, then you're not going to get that.

I stayed at a K's House hostel (Oasis in Asakusa) last time I was in Tokyo. Clean, nice people. Though it's kind of like a dorm, so I don't remember if there's any single beds.

They have double and triple ensuite rooms.

I stayed at MyStays Ochanomizu once. It got good access to both JR Yamanote and JR Chuo lines. Also got access to Chiyoda, Marunouchi and Shinjuku subway lines, even if I didn't use those myself.

Could someone tell me why the Sakura Hotel is "trash"?

If you're looking at a traditional hotel, perhaps a Super Hotel can fit your needs. I stayed in several on my trip. They were all 60-70 dollars for a single room.

I stayed in Sakura Hotel Jimbocho a couple of months ago and it was perfect for me.

It's pretty close to a subway station, clean, and cheap. Room is completely barebones and small as fuck, but I sure as hell didn't go to Tokyo to stay inside my room anyway.

Edit: Sakura Hotel and Sakura House are two different things, by the way.

used airbnb before, near skytree oshiage... was good.

used Horidome villa and nice staff, shower, standard flashy toilet and comfortable bed

OP what are you looking for? Somewhere that's clean and friendly or somewhere close to the party?

I generally recommend Khaosan Tokyo Kabuki in Asakusa.

If you're looking to meet new people along the way, "Backpacker's Hostel K's House Tokyo" is a great way to do so. Walking distance from Asakusa Shrine, JR metro line and Akihabara. Relatively cheap too and the staff know English better than other hotels.

I met a lot of interesting characters there and only have good memories about the place. The only possible negative is that it's a shared house, meaning you will be sleeping with other people in the same room (different beds) and shared showers/bathrooms. If you're picky about that stuff... Oh well. :P

Great answers and I'll check them all out in a sec! I'll update the op to reflect that we're not interested in couch surfing or hostels and the like:)

honestly, given your needs, an apartment or house on air bnb is the most ideal. you can search them based on area and see how close it is to the station you want to be by.

You're spending ¥60,000 a night? That's $485 U.S. roughly a night. I stayed at a fancy 4 star hotel in downtown Osaka and I didn't even pay anywhere near that a night, and I stayed 8 days too.

Toyoko-Inn.

Yup, this. Good, clean, cheap business hotel chain. Just look for business hotels when looking to book somewhere.

That said, I'm staying at a more expensive "regular" hotel when I'm gonna be over there next month. My wife wants to be right near the station. It's only for one night, though, then we're staying at her parents' place out in Ishikawa-ken. Makes the two-week trip a hell of a lot more affordable.

That price is insane. You should be able to find a decent place for less than 20,000 yen a night. We're going to stay at a Super Hotel for 14,000 yen a night.

i think he meant 6000Y a night.

i walked by one of their other branches in hatagaya (outside of shinjuku) and there is no way it's that expensive lol

When we went to Japan, we stayed at Kimi Ryokan in Ikebukuro. It's pretty cheap and I had a great experience with them. We'll be staying there again when we go back this September.

Edit: they use futons rather than western beds so I'm not sure if that disqualifies them for you. I have a feeling it might be harder to find an affordable place with western style beds. They're comfortable enough except for certain activities so I would consider a place with a futon.

OP, the type of hotel you're looking for is called a "business hotel" in Japan. Toyoko Inn andTokyu Inn are popular business hotel chains, but there are plenty of others if they are full. Also, if they say they are full on their website it may be worth checking with other Japanese travel sites. Sometimes hotels will give availability to JTB or Rakuten or Jalan that they don't offer themselves.

Edit: Looks like there is also a Sunroute Hotel and an APA Hotel in the area, which would be similar.

Yeah, I eventually figured that out. Went with the Shinbashi Sambakan Hotel, seemed nice enough and lies close to the subway and that strange storage room mall building in Shinbashi. Which I love.

Near Shinbashi? Park Hotel Tokyo is excellent and very reasonably priced.

If you want to try a different (but popular) location then Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku is OK (not too pricey, small rooms), or Hotel Century Southern Tower (very nice, pricey... their Japanese restaurant "Horikawa" is delicious).

Tip: if possible go through the Japanese websites, they often offer many more options.

Ooops, seems I'm LTTP. Still posting for posterity.

Well, I'll probably go to Tokyo more than twice and will be sure to check those out then!

I've stayed at Hotel Suncity Ikebukuro, it's alright.
They are prepaid, in cash. Ask for a higher floor, as it's near the train.

Their website is in Japanese but you can email them for a simple booking.

EDIT: oh, it looks like they have an English booking system on their site now.
