Good "portable" PSP games

Alpha 3, Mega Man Powered Up, Irregular Hunter X, and soon the new Ghouls 'n Ghosts game. All can be enjoyed in short bursts of gameplay.

For sure. RPGs are amongst my favorite genre, but in the pre-hardware-sleep days, it could be a pretty big pain in the ass to find yourself in an unsave-able position one stop away from the subway stop you need to exit in order to get to work on time! :lol

But now? As I said in my first post. Not an issue at all.

I got quite good at pacing my play though. If I realised that I was close to the point of no return and hadn't reached a new save point, I would backtrack to the last one, so as not to lose any progress. I only ever got caught out once or twice, with having to shut off the machine and losing all my progress.

Even with the PSP it's only very recently that I've stopped pacing myself like that and just flip the switch into sleep mode just as the train's pulling up.

In fact, I've increasingly started wishing that home consoles had sleep functions as well, because I find it's far more frequent that I'll lose progress on a console game because I have to be somewhere, or do something and can't find a bloody savepoint. I think it's because when playing a portable on the train I know that the paying session will be curtailed and tailor the games I choose and what I do in them around it. When playing at home the interruptions are more unexpected.

To be honest, this is the main problem with the PSP (aside from its uncomfortable analog stick and mysteriously hyper greasy surface -- sony engineers discovered the solution to perpetual grease or something). No "portable" games. Not too many games at all, really.

And it's why, unfortunately, I'm getting rid of mine. I prefer GBA. :)

Sometimes, it helps to read a thread before you post in it.

Did you put it in sleep mode with another game in it, then changed the disc and tried to turn it on? I know I've done that a couple of times, and the PSP wouldn't turn on properly. Had to switch it off, take out the disc and turn it back on to the system menus, before putting the game I wanted back in.

Nope, there was no game in it. The last time I used it before Tekken DR was putting porn or wallpapers on my psp, must have just left it in sleep mode (for like about a month).

I've reallized that most PSP games are pretty portable, GTA LCS is really good to pick up, Loco Roco and Megaman games are pretty portable too, not to mention all those great racing games (WipEout, Ridge Racer, Burnout). Tekken is a great one too. What are the other great portable games on PSP? In the AAA title, are Syphon Filter and Daxter adapted to short sessions?

Good question here. I glanced at my collection of PSP games (numbering 16 at the moment), and quite frankly, just about any of them would be fitting for a quick pick-up game on the run.

Daxter's one of my favorite PSP games overall, although most parts of the main game aren't that well suited to short sessions of only a few minutes. On the other hand, the "Bug Combat" mini-game (accessible from the main menu) and some of the dream sequence mini-games (accessible by going to the bed in Daxter's room) are fun in short bursts.

For real short sessions, I kind of gravitate towards some of the classic game packs--Namco Museum Battle Collection, Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play, Capcom Classics Collection Remixed (been playing this one a lot lately), Gradius Collection, and Pinball Hall of Fame.

Puzzle games have traditionally served well as good portable video games. Mercury and Lemmings are good choices, as well as GripShift which has many puzzle-like aspects. Lumines has a Puzzle Mode that's fun to chip away at in short bursts.

If you like the Tony Hawk games, then Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix makes for good portable fun. I'd suggest Classic Mode if you're out and about and have a few minutes to spare--but keep in mind that the initial load is rather lengthy.
