I was actually going to add CCR to my list but then my browser crashed and my top 50 list among it. CRR is fucking great. For those who don't know it probably knows at least followgin songs from them: Fortunate Son, Bad Moon Rising (fucking awesome song) and Have you ever seen rain.

Add Lodi, Cotton Fields, Who'll Stop the Rain and Run Through the Jungle, and you're set :D

Anyone else find The Doors pretty annoying the majority of the time?

The Doors were dreadful IMO.

Still trying to get into them. I've had their first album for a while and I'm starting to enjoy it but not enough to check out their other albums yet.

You forgot the song Epitaph! :O http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAxvyvWPhiY *snief*

And The Doors aren't annoying or even dreadful, what are you talking about? :O Their first two albums are almost perfect.

i'd start with the 50's stuff and then go form there:

Carl Perkins
Eddie Cochran
Gene Vincent and his Bluecaps
Elvis Presley
Chuck Berry
Johnny Burnette
Buddy Holly
Hank Ballard and the Midnighters
Jerry Lee Lewis
Bo Diddley
Bill Haley and The Comets
Fats Domino

Pink Floyd was the only 60s/70s band that I ever really got into. I liked the prog more than the straight-up riff rock.

I don't get the fuss about the Beatles. Totally can't get into their music.

Me neither (see the most recent Lady Gaga thread for the shitstorm). I respect how they've influenced countless bands and artists for the last four decades, but I just can't get into their music. Same goes for Led Zeppelin.

Please don't look at it directly in the eye and stay completely still, Puddles. It might see you! Wild Combichristoffersen's are extremely dangerous creatures.

Puddles said:
How much Led Zeppelin have you actually listened to?

Quite a bit of the stuff they did from their first four albums (not familiar with what they did after Zoso). The bluesy rock thing they had going just doesn't do anything for me, besides Stairway and Immigrant Song. And, well, Plant's vocals in Zeppelin tend to annoy me when he goes off wailing.

I only ravage asses for fun and profit :3

I love how Heroin was the first Velvet Underground song HunkyDory mentioned.

So, so, so good. Elementary musicianship, MASTERFUL songwriting.

I like how people are recommending King Crimson's "In The Court of the Crimson King", but if you listen to that album and get anything from them past 1974.... you're in for a surprise as to their style evolved.

I'm going to recommend some Faith No More, a great rock band from the early to late 1990's. They broke up in 1998, but as of last year they've started touring again.

Album/Song
Angeldist/Mid-Life Crisis
Angeldust/Everything's Ruined
King For a Day, Fool for a Lifetime/Just a Man
The Real Thing/The Real Thing

Also, am I really the first person to mention Rush?
Moving Pictures/Tom Sawyer
Permanent Waves/The Spirit of the Radio
Power Windows/Mystic Rhythms
Signals/Subdivisions

there is so much variety in classic rock, when i started listening there were songs that immediately grabbed me and after listening to them my love for the genre just grew and and expanded. so, here's some different bands/styles, assuming we're talking about mostly 60's/70's here...

Not that there's anything wrong with Best Buy, but most of the canonical rock albums are available for about $0.50 if you go to a used CD store. :p

Sadly, I live in Connecticut. There's.... not many options here. :(

Ah hale naw! ;-)
That was the first thing that got me hooked.

Pretty much anything by The Who, my favorite band for the last 20 or so years.

Live At Leeds and Who's Next were already mentioned but they're so damn good they should be suggested as many times as possible. By Numbers has some good songs on it too.

The best Rock rock'n roll bands of the past decade.

2008_0509_drive-by-truckers.jpg

They come from country so their songs have a flavor of "mama did too much meth and now she's dead."

Puttin' people on the Moon - A harsh song about being forced to sell meth when other options run out.

My Sweet Annette this is more somber and low key.

Where the Devil Don't Stay - I forget what this song is about but it's got some killer riffs.

Their stuff is very much rock that you could envision people actually practice in their garage after a long shift at Dairy Queen.

Aside, these guys sorta got me into western americana rock and led me to the awesome band Murder by Death. Apparently they have a song on the Inglorious Basterds soundtrack.

Everythings pretty much been covered.

If you're enjoying Zeppelin I have a few other good hard rock bluesy bands to share, I'm just too lazy atm.

Great thread! I think all the classic band have been covered, the OP will have an amazing time if he listens to all this recommendations (I know I will).

This is the best album in like... forever.

I remember being 12 and listening to this thing. I just fell in love with Rock and Roll, I felt like I had found an identity. I don't like the psychodelic stuff from Led Zeppelin later on, but this album collection is probably the best I heard in my life :X

11 years later I still have it in my car, and wheneverI feel like having a good drive around a sunny day with my arms outside, I put communication breakdown on the loudest volume and just enjoy the flow.

Don't forget Neil Young you turds

Such a simple, funny but completely sweet guitar solo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh44QPT1mPE
smooth as butter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v5E27Fp59c
don't forget he was in CSNY AND Buffalo Springfeild

Maybe not Cock rock or prog, but..... come on.

Greatest hits are cheating and play like an ipod on shuffle (classic rock is all about "albums" afterall)... but that is a good collection

soo good.
Not enough people love this album in the world.

EDIT: IMO The Doors are a band best experienced through greatest hits, but thats me... I sort of hate their albums but love their songs.

Can't stress this enough.
For a little more accessible albums: Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Rush...Exit Stage Left. Hemispheres is a fucking masterpiece front to back.

Camel and Yes (70's era) are excellent too if you dig the epic Rush stuff.

Completely ignore all the other post, you only need to hear this band:
